* Weather. The Temperature highs will be in the high 40's on Friday & Saturday, rising to nearly 60 on Sunday. The temperature lows will be in the mid 30's on Friday & Saturday, rising to the mid 40's on Sunday. Rain is in the forecast for Friday, likely between 10 am - 9 pm, but the total rainfall will only be about a quarter inch. It will be cloudy on Saturday only. Winds will be 10 - 15 mph all weekend. Friday - Jay Jaxon Fashion @ QHS

* The Queens Historical Society at the Kingsland Homestead at 143-35 37th Avenue in Flushing is hosting a new exhibit surrounding Fashion Designer and Queens native Jay Jaxon through December 2020. They also have a Victorian parlor room exhibition showing it as it would have appeared in 1870. Tickets $3 / $5 - www.queenshistoricalsociety.org.

* From Wednesday, March 11 - Sunday, March 15, the Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria at 35th Avenue & 36th Street is hosting a series entitled First Look. The First Look provides viewers with an early glimpse of some of the museum's chosen recent European and other international films. There's also an exhibit entitled Reimagining the Cel: Experiments in Animation from the 1980's, which includes three key films about animation [thru March 15, 2020]. And there are films for adults every afternoon and evening [$15 / $11 / $9 - www.movingimage.us].

 

Saturday - St Pat's Parade in the Rockaways, LIC Artists at Plaxall, Irish Dances at Queens Theatre, MoMI 'First Look' coming Next Week

queens things to do* The photo at right shows a participant in one of the Queens St Patrick's Day Parades in Queens in a prior year. Last week there was a St. Pat's Parade in Sunnyside, and this week there's on in the Rockaways - see details below.

* The Rockaway St Patrick's Day Parade begins in Rockaway Beach on Saturday, March 7th, 2020. The day begins with a mass that starts at 9 am at 129th Street and Rockaway Blvd. All are welcome. There's an invitation only brunch that runs from 10.30 am - 12.30 pm at the Knights of Columbus Hall at 333 Beach 90th Street. The parade begins at 1 pm at Beach 130th Street and Newport Avenue. The parade marches down Newport Avenue and along Rockaway Beach Blvd to 105th Street. The ceremonies are at St. Camillus Church at Beach 100th Street. They held a charity ball which they call Atun's Ball on February 8th. www.queenscountyparade.org.

* The Sculpture Center at 44-19 Purves Street, off Jackson Avenue in LIC is hosting a workshop that begins at 2 pm entitled Model to Exhaust a Lamp. The workshop will be lead by an artist who will have particpants create paper lamps while exploring the relationship between language and objects. The workshop is free www.sculpture-center.org.

* On Sunday we get to spring forward at 2 am [move your clock to 3 am] when Daylight Savings Time begins.

* The LaGuardia Performing Arts Center located at 31-10 Thomson Ave in LIC is hosting the annual Rough Draft Festival which runs from Wednesday, March 11th through Friday, April 3rd, 2020. The theater festival presents a series of contemporary, original and oftentimes first glimpses of works in progress by local actors, musicians, choreographers and dancers. The first Queens St. Patrick's Day begins with the St. Pat's For All Parade in Sunnyside on Sunday March 1, 2020 that assembles at 12 noon and steps off at 1 pm. Week Beginning 3.2.20 - An Evening of Fine Food, Clean Power Initiative Meeting, Plastic Grocery Bag Ban

On Thursday, March 5th, there's an Astoria Public Power Town Hall from 6.30 - 8.30 pm at the HANAC George Douris Tower at 2740 Hoyt Avenue South in Astoria. Local government officials and community activists will discuss the possibility of having the government begin the process of investing in clean energy since the private profiteering companies have been dragging their feet far too long.

Valerie Green / Dance Entropy will be performing from 1 - 3 pm at Flushing Town Hall at 137-35 Northern Blvd in Flushing. The performance, entitled Home, is described as,

* Weather. The Temperature highs will be in the mid 50's, Friday, low 40's Saturday and mid 40's on Sunday. The temperature lows will be around 30 on Friday & Saturday, rising to 40 by Sunday. Scant Rain or Snow is in the forecast this weekend, with a slight possibility of a small amount Friday afternoon and again late Sunday evening - but it will be CLOUDY most of the weekend. Winds will range from 5 - 10 mph throughout the weekend. The Humidity will range from the mid 60% on Friday, dropping to the mid 40% range on Saturday and rising back to about 60% on Sunday. * The Astoria Performing Arts Center at 28-21 Steinway Street presents Jump which is an original play featuring two sisters and their father trying to process a traumatic event. * Four exhibits began October 6th at the Queens Museum in Flushing Meadows Corona Park [art / www.queensmuseum.org]. One is about the works of illustrator Rube Goldberg, a well known 20th century comic illustrator [thru 2/9]. Another about French artist Nicolas Moufarrege who did embroidered paintings in Paris, Lebanon and NYC in the latter part of the 20th century [thru 2/16]. My Blue Window is a contemporary American artist's installation that explores institutionalized racism [thru 2/16]. And Fade into Black which was a look at the changing message of T-shirts created in Latin America and Southeast Asia, worn here and recycled in Latin America and Southeast Asia, has ended.

* The Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria at 35th Avenue & 36th Street is showing an exhibit entitled Creatures from the Land of Thra: Character Design for The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance in the Behind the Screen section of the museum through Feb 23, 2020. It's about character / puppet making by Jim Henson and Frank Oz. Another exhibit is entitled Reimagining the Cel: Experiments in Animation from the 1980's, which includes three key films about animation [thru March 15, 2020]. Week Beginning 2.10.20 - Valentines Day, The Day Harlem Saved Dr. King, Master Dance Class in LIC & LGA Job Fair

* On Monday February 10th beginning at 6 pm the Queens Public Library at 41-17 Main Street in the Flushing neighborhood of Queens, will host a theatrical performance by the Shades of Truth Theatre entitled The Day Harlem Saved Dr. King. The show runs about an hour to an hour and a half. Free.

* On Wednesday, February 12th from 10 am - 2 pm there's an LGA Aviation Job Fair at Elmcor at 33-16 108th Street in Corona.
