Pat Magda, of Greenpoint Avenue, has been selected as the winner of a brand-new, 32” flat-screen Sharp TV in Sunnyside Shines’ Residential Survey & TV Contest.

A resident of Sunnyside for over 40 years, Ms. Magda was completely surprised when she got the call saying that she had won. “I remembered filling out the survey,” said Ms. Magda, but I never thought twice about winning the TV. You know how it is, you enter these things but you never win but this time I did! I am very excited. It lifted my whole spirits!”

Sunnyside Shines, our neighborhood business improvement district (BID), has been conducting surveys of Sunnyside residents in collaboration with LaGuardia Community College. These surveys are required of all new BIDs by the City of New York to assess the needs of a particular area. The Sunnyside Shines survey asked questions such as: what is your favorite sit-down restaurant and favorite public space and if people noticed improvement from the efforts of the BID's street cleaning crew. As an incentive to complete the survey Sunnyside Shines created the TV contest to encourage people to respond.

“I think it’s a great thing to have Sunnyside Shines help the neighborhood,” said Ms. Magda.

Over 400 surveys were completed by LaGuardia student street teams or were submitted to Sunnyside Shines by post or email. Sunnyside Community Services was an early supporter of the project and returned a large batch of surveys completed by local seniors. Tim Chen, of Quaint Restaurant on Skillman Ave., was another enthusiastic supporter of the survey. Even though his restaurant is not in the BID, as a member of the Sunnyside Chamber of Commerce Tim understands the value of understanding one’s customer base.

Results of the survey will be posted on Sunnyside Shines website as soon as they are tabulated.
