Rent @ York College PAC

rent york college performing arts center reviewMay 11, 2012 / Jamaica NY / Queens Buzz. The York College Performing Arts Center is in its last week of performing the musical Rent. We had the opportunity to attend the performance last weekend and enjoyed it in its entirety.

Some of the vocals were outstanding, the modern lighting and set design were a pleasure to watch, and the performance shook loose emotions, in a way only possible through a heart-rending musical. We'll have more on Rent at the York College Performing Arts Center later today.

Click to the Queens Events calendar and then down to the theater section to obtain performance times and ticket information. And click here to view the beginning of a photo slide show of Rent at York College Performing Arts Center.

Fashion Show Features Local Talent

come to fashion shows in queensApril 30, 2012 / Jamaica NY / Queens Buzz. On April 21st the Come To Fashion show stepped out in the Jamaica section of Queens. The fashion show featured local fashion designers and retailers doing business in the Jamaica section of Queens.

When I arrived at the Jamaica Performing Arts Center, I was pleasantly surprised by unique set design for the show. Jamaica Center, the Jamaica BID, had hired a designer to create an original venue through which to present the models and the designers' clothing.

Click here later this week to view photos of the event, as well as a brief report about the Come To Fashion show in Jamaica Queens.

The Wedding ... Community Theater With Redemptive Theme

Can One Marry A Billionaire And Still Keep Their Sense of Self?

December 12, 2011 / Jamaica / Theater in Queens / Queens Buzz. Saturday afternoon I made my way to the York Performing Arts Center in the Jamaica neighborhood of Queens to see a new play entitled The Wedding.

The play was written by Beverly Morrison Caesar for Arts in Christian Theatre [ACT] which is associated with the Pentecostal Church on Guy Brewer Blvd. Beverly’s plays contain a redemptive message and are performed by volunteers from the church and surrounding community.

I spoke to Beverly about how the play originated and how she combined theater, pantomime and a fashion show all in one grand performance. Click here to read more about The Wedding at the York Performing Arts Center in Jamaica Queens.

King Manor Presents Delicious Dutch Foods & Recipes

October 16, 2011 / Jamaica Neighborhood / Food & Wine / Queens Buzz. In tandem with the NY Open House and the Historic House Festival weekend, King Manor selected an historic food theme that would have pleased New Amsterdam Mayor Peter Stuyvesant.

There were two sections to this historic presentation. The first was a reenactment of colonial Dutch cooking by Diane G. Fish, who is a living historian with a specialty in Civil War reenactments. To the delight of all there, including myself, she’s also an avid foodie who’s well acquainted with Dutch cuisine. And the second section was a lecture and presentation by a renowned historian and food writer, Peter G. Rose. Peter took us back to the Dutch kitchens in the Netherlands of the 1700’s and traced the migration of Dutch foods into the colonial world.

Many of the things she would discuss, we had the opportunity to sample prior to the lecture … click here to read the rest of our report on Dutch cuisine & recipes in Queens New York.

King Manor Brings Dead Back To Life

Spirits Of Dutch & Colonial Queens Reawakened

October 15, 2011 / Jamaica Neighborhood / Queens History / Queens Buzz.  It’s easy to forget Queens colonial past some 200 - 400 years ago, as so much has happened since then.  But October is the time to reawaken long lost spirits and I’m happy to report I witnessed just such a reawakening at King Manor in King Park in the Jamaica neighborhood of Queens this past weekend.

New York Open House and the Historic House Trust got together this year and held their annual weekend extravaganza this past weekend, with food as the historic theme.  So King Manor put together a program celebrating Dutch cuisine and its influence on American fare, and in the process gave us a tour and an education about one of the signers of the U.S. Constitution and a strong, outspoken advocate against slavery.

Graduates Encouraged To Pursue Their Aspirations In Math & Sciences

June 3, 2011 / Jamaica NY Neighborhood / Queens Buzz. On Friday June 3rd, the 41st commencement of York College took place. Aprille Ericsson, Ph. D. was the commencement speaker. Aprille talked about her life, growing up in the middle of 20th century America, when African Americans were still fighting for equality.

She grew up in Brooklyn, was bussed to public schools, and demonstrated a high aptitude for mathematics and sciences, which enabled her to gain acceptance into schools with strong math and science programs. When she graduated she went to work for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, which is most frequently referred to as NASA. She spent the bulk of her career an Instrument Manager and Aerospace Engineer [aka rocket scientist] at NASA, working on various projects spanning nearly three decades.

Real Estate Development Projects - Jamaica

April 15, 2011 / Jamaica Neighborhood / Jamaica Real Estate / Queens Buzz. The Jamaica neighborhood has a history dating back to colonial times. Rufus King was a signer of the Constitution and his house still stands in a park that also carries his name. There are also a number of old churches, graveyards and business buildings dating back to the 1800’s, when Jamaica was a thriving transportation hub for the Long Island Railroad.

In the 1950’s and 1960’s a large number of the middle class in this neighborhood left it for the greener pastures of Long Island. After a period of turmoil and transition, the city began reinvesting in the neighborhood starting in the 1970’s, in a process which continues today.
