August 30, 2010 / Queens Buzz. The three day Labor Day Weekend is one happening one in Queens, but then again, aren't they all? We're currently expecting perfect weather and we have lots of things available to do.
1. PERFECT Labor Day Weekend Weather 2010
There's a 60% chance of rain on Friday, but after that three days of clear skies with highs in the 70's and lows in the 60's.
2. Outdoor Activities & Sports In Queens
So what to do? There's golfing, kyaking, biking, swimming [it is the last week the public outdoor pools will be open].
3. Art Exhibits In Queens Labor Day Weekend 2010
So you're the creative type? There are art exhibits at the Flux Factory and a Warm Up Party at PS1. There are also exhibits at the Queens Museum Of Art and a number of LIC galleries.
4. Food, Wine, Farmers Markets & Dining
For the foodies there's a Korean food feastival [no that's not a typo] in Flushing, some great farmers markets scattered throughout the borough a few wine tastings at some of the local wine stores and we have a mix of authentic ethnic restaurants that's unbeatable, particularly when factoring in value.
5. Things To Do With Kids Labor Day Weekend 2010 Queens
Have kids? How about the zoo, the NY Hall of Science or the Botanical Gardens? There's also swimming at the public pools and there's a skateboarding rink just south of Queens Theatre In The Park in Flushing Meadows Corona Park. There's also putt putt golf at the miniature golf course of Kissena and you can bike safely in most of the large parks like Astoria Park and Flushing Meadows Corona Park.
6. Music / Concerts Labor Day Weekend 2010
If you're a music lover, especially of the Caribbean sound, you'll love Island Jam going on in Jamaica at the Roy Wilkins Park. And you'll find a number of live club / bar venues throughout the borough, although likely more so in Astoria / LIC.
7. National Sporting Events Labor Day Weekend 2010
For spectator sports we have the U.S. Open going on and the Mets are still in season and we are home to two top flight race tracks, although I believe they are both presently closed.
8. Dance / Theatrical Events Labor Day Weekend Queens
As for the dance and theaters, it seems most of them decided to enjoy the three day break, so as far as I know, there's not much scheduled.
9. Shopping & Street Fairs Labor Day Weekend
And last, but not least, there are a number of street fairs going on this weekend, as well as a plethora of great locally-owned shops offering a wide selection of goods from around the world.
