Noguchi Museum In Long Island City

March 8: Second Sundays - Curators' Talk

At 3 pm on the Second Sunday of every month the Noguchi hosts Dialogues on Art, Architecture and Design. In March in the Main Gallery, Alexandra Munroe, a curator from the Guggenheim and Mark Johnson of the San Francisco State Gallery talk about the influence of Asian art on American culture and on Asian American artists. Karin Higa, a curator from the American Japanese National Museum will moderate the discussion.

Through May 31st: Noguchi's Akari Light Sculptures

This exhibit shows some of Noguchi's light sculptures which were featured in the 1986 Venice Biennale. In this work Noguchi tried to contrast the transitory with the permanent. According to the museum it's a "small but significant exhibit".

Extended Through March 15, 2009: Full Figure And Portraiture

In Portraiture, full figure bronze sculpture Undine appears in its first public appearance since the 1920's, alongside a gallery room of the museum's collection of busts. The Undine sculpture is life size and shown in the photo at left. This magnificent work of art is a must see.

The museum is open Wednesday through Friday 10 am - 5 pm, and Saturday - Sunday 11 am - 6 pm. Admission $10 / $5. First Friday of every month, pay what you wish. PS1 Art Exhibits in Long Island City

Through September 14: Florian Slotwana

This one sounds like fun. This Berlin based artist brings most of the large things in his apartment to the PS1 Museum and arranges them into an artistic exhibit by playing off of the exhibition space. This includes his washing machine, dining room table, kitchen sink and even wardrobe. When the exhibit is over these will be returned to everyday use.

Through September 14: Kenneth Anger

This is the first major survey of avant-garde film maker Kenneth Anger's work. Anger explores dreams, myths and desire in his movies, frequently mocking the Hollywood establishment.

Through September 14: Jonathan Horowitz And / Or

Jonathan Horowitz explores consumerism and the media in video, sound, sculpture and photography.

Through May 4: Minus Space

Minus Space is an abstract minimalist exhibit of the reductionist work of 54 artists from around the world.

March 13: Richard Meier Collection Exhibit

At 12 pm, a walk through of Richard Meier's architectural models dating from the 1960's to the Getty Museum in 1997. Members Only.

March 15: It's All Yours Now

At 4 pm the public is welcome for a performance of poetry and song. Six pieces will be performed about power, identity politics and transmission.

Through March 22: The Space Of The Work And The Place Of The Object

This is a "group exhibition that considers the status of the art object within the context of its production". This exhibit explores the artistic process.

Through March 22: In Practice Project Series

Eight emerging artists' explore a range of topics. The media used varies widely from performance art, to interactive art and on. Looks interesting.

March 30: Sunnyside Shorts Fund Raiser

Between 7 and 9 pm at Claret Wine Bar, producers Sherry Gamlin and Teresa Ward host a fundraiser for the Third Annual Sunnyside Film Festival entitled Sunnyside Shorts. There will be raffles, clips from last years films and an opportunity to meet some of the film makers. Proceeds will go toward funding the festival which is scheduled for September.

The Ahn Trio performs chamber music with a modern influence. These three Korean sisters, all whom graduated from Julliard, have a long resume of performances at the top culturual institutions in this country and they are beginning to travel around the world. March 7: NYC Opera and LPAC Collaboration

This is a musical journey which will be narrated and conducted by George Manahan and performed by the NYC Opera. It will include minimalism, electronic music, jazz and neo-classicism. At 8 pm in the Main Stage Theater. Admission $20 / $15.

Kingsland Homestead In Flushing

March 8th: Irish American Athletic Club & Celtic Park Stadium In Queens

This is a slide presentation about The Irish American Athletic Club which existed from 1898 to 1930. Members from the club competed in six Olympics and in 1908 the club's members brought back ten of the U.S.'s 23 medals. This lecture begins at 2.30 pm.

March 22: Long Island Motor Parkway Centennial

At 2.30 pm authors Howard Kruplick and Al Velocci will give an illustrated lecture about the development of the Long Island Motor Parkway which was built in 1908 as the first highway designed exclusively for automobiles.

March: Queens As It Was [1880 - 1920] and Flushing Freedom Mile

Ongoing exhibits at the Homestead showing life in Queens as it changed through the ages.

At 6.30 pm Dr Rafailovich, a distinguished professor of materials science and engineering at SUNY Stonybrook, will discuss the implications of nanotechnology. Nanotechnology is the science of manipulating atoms and molecules. It's currently in use in many disciplines including fashion, sports, medicine and autos. Admission Free.

St Patrick's Day Parade In Sunnyside Woodside

March 1: St Patrick's Peoples Day Parade

The annual St Patty's Day Parade begins at 2 pm in Sunnyside at 43rd and Skillman Streets. If you arrive at the starting point somewhere between on time and early you can hear the local politicos give speeches. The Parade winds its way up Skillman to Woodside Avenue and 61st Street.

March: Flushing Meadows Corona Park Aquatic Center & World Class Ice Rink

NYC Parks Department opened a new Olympic sized pool in Flushing Meadows Corona Park. You must bring a swimming suit, a swimming cap and quality padlock to be admitted.
