Noguchi Museum In Long Island City

May 10: Second Sundays - East & West: Between Past and Future

At 3 pm on the Second Sunday of every month the Noguchi hosts Dialogues on Art, Architecture and Design - and during the summer months - live music in the garden. In May in the Main Gallery, a discussion of Asian American art in the 21st century. The discussion panel includes two art critics and two artists.

Through May 31st: Noguchi's Akari Light Sculptures

This exhibit shows some of Noguchi's light sculptures which were featured in the 1986 Venice Biennale. In this work Noguchi tried to contrast the transitory with the permanent. According to the museum it's a "small but significant exhibit".

Through May 31: Highlights From The Collection

This includes some early ceramics that Noguchi did in Japan in his early years, as well as some beautiful stone sculptures toward the end of his career when he sought to work with the natural properties of the stones.

The museum is open Wednesday through Friday 10 am - 5 pm, and Saturday - Sunday 11 am - 6 pm. Admission $10 / $5. First Friday of every month, pay what you wish. PS1 Art Exhibits in Long Island City

Through September 14: Florian Slotwana

This one sounds like fun. This Berlin based artist brings most of the large things in his apartment to the PS1 Museum and arranges them into an artistic exhibit by playing off of the exhibition space. This includes his washing machine, dining room table, kitchen sink and even wardrobe. When the exhibit is over these will be returned to everyday use.

Through September 14: Kenneth Anger

This is the first major survey of avant-garde film maker Kenneth Anger's work. Anger explores dreams, myths and desire in his movies, frequently mocking the Hollywood establishment.

Through September 14: Jonathan Horowitz And / Or

Jonathan Horowitz explores consumerism and the media in video, sound, sculpture and photography.

Through May 4: Minus Space

Minus Space is an abstract minimalist exhibit of the reductionist work of 54 artists from around the world.

Through October 24: Leandro Erlich's Swimming Pool

June 28 - September 14: Young Architects Program 2009: afterparty

This is the tenth installation of the Young Architects Program. Shade, water, seating and bar areas for the courtyard was the focus of the 'urban shelter' project which was won by a New England architect firm by the name of MOS. Look for 'chimneys' and a 'bedouin tent' in the courtyard this summer which is designed to provide a cooling down place at one of the 'hottest' spots in Queens on a summer Saturday night.

Crane Street Studios is home to many LIC artists' studios. The building itself is a canvas of sorts, which is used by artists to express themselves / show their work.

This is an exhibit featuring ten different artists, each of whom explores how globalization has affected their Queens neighborhood.

May 10 [exhibits through most of the summer]: State Fair / Open Space

From 2 - 6 pm an opening event for both exhibits. The State Fair / Open Space exhibits will inhabit the park through most of the summer. The open space exhibits include a subway stop, a barn, a temple that looks like a tugboat, grasping hands, a snowflake and more. March 30: Sunnyside Shorts Fund Raiser

Between 7 and 9 pm at Claret Wine Bar, producers Sherry Gamlin and Teresa Ward host a fundraiser for the Third Annual Sunnyside Film Festival entitled Sunnyside Shorts. There will be raffles, clips from last years films and an opportunity to meet some of the film makers. Proceeds will go toward funding the festival which is scheduled for September.

Kingsland Homestead In Flushing

March 8th: Irish American Athletic Club & Celtic Park Stadium In Queens

This is a slide presentation about The Irish American Athletic Club which existed from 1898 to 1930. Members from the club competed in six Olympics and in 1908 the club's members brought back ten of the U.S.'s 23 medals. This lecture begins at 2.30 pm.

March 22: Long Island Motor Parkway Centennial

At 2.30 pm authors Howard Kruplick and Al Velocci will give an illustrated lecture about the development of the Long Island Motor Parkway which was built in 1908 as the first highway designed exclusively for automobiles.

March: Flushing Meadows Corona Park Aquatic Center & World Class Ice Rink

NYC Parks Department opened a new Olympic sized pool in Flushing Meadows Corona Park. You must bring a swimming suit, a swimming cap and quality padlock to be admitted. There's also a world class ice rink in the same facility, wherein you can rent skates.
