The New York Irish Center

Long Island City NY / June 11, 2008. I had the occasion to spontaneously visit the NY Irish Center in LIC this evening. Liz Kenny, the Executive Director, was my gracious host. It's located near the corner of Jackson Avenue and Vernon Boulevard, so it's within walking distance of most of the commercial areas between the Citicorp building and the East River.
The New York Irish Center Is A Community Center
The center welcomes the entire community to its events and hospitality. Liz informed me that many of the center's classes have, at times, been attended by more non-Irish members of the community than Irish, so it's a very [Irish] American institution in regard to its openness. And that's no blarney.
New York Irish Center Provides Cultural Programs
The center provides music classes, Gaelic language lessons, Line Dancing [and other dance classes] as well as hosting lunches for seniors and other such events. The center is home to two drama groups which perform plays and host other theatrical performances in its auditorium. Lastly, there's an internet cafe where one can just come to relax and do a bit of surfing. That will give you time to catch up on what's going on in Queens by logging onto this web magazine Queens Buzz.com.
