Lent Riker Homestead Is The Longest Continuously Inhabited Home In NYC

Jackson Heights / March 2009. The Lent Riker Homestead in Jackson Heights is believed to be the oldest private dwelling that has been continuously inhabited in New York City. It was built in 1654 as a one room house and later expanded. It was originally built and owned by the family of a Dutch settler named Abraham Riker [Rikers Island]. It has been passed onto only two other families since 1654, when the initial structure was first built.

The Lent Riker Homestead appears to be an interesting historical destination in Queens, NY. Since 1966, the current residents, the Smiths, have lived in the homestead. They are one of the only three families that owned the residence since its inception. In 1975, nine years after moving into it, Mr Smith bought it. The home has a cemetery on the grounds which dates back hundreds of years. Every so often the Smiths provide tour opportunities to the public.
