October - Food & Film
October is the first month of the fabulous fourth quarter. The holidays begin to mount, starting with Columbus Day, then Halloween and onto November. In Queens it's also the month of two restaurant weeks and the Jackson Heights Food and Film Festival. And a few street fairs continue, along with the local farmers markets.
Art Opening, Mystery & Halloween
On Sunday Socrates Sculpture Park holds its annual Halloween Party, this year the theme is 'Glam Rock'. Also Sunday, PS1 opens up its fall exhibits. There are three of them, including 1969, 24 Robert Bergman photos and Between Spaces which was done by the junior curatorial staff. Fantasy / Art / Salsa & Max Drucker
The Jackson Heights Art Club opens their Fall Art Exhibit from 10 am to 5 pm on both Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday Socrates Sculpture Park decided to push back their annual Halloween Harvest Festival to Oct 25th. On Saturday evening there is a merengue, salsa, bachata dance performance by the Rodrigo Dance Studio at the Jamaica Performing Arts Center.
And on Sunday at 2 pm at Flushing Town Hall there will be a free performance by Pablo Mayor which is a 12 piece latin jazz band. Also at 2 pm there will be a free lecture and presentation about photographer Max Drucker [circa 1930's] at the Greater Astoria Historical Society . Parades, Festivals & A Lot More
The 38th Annual Greek Festival in Flushing, sponsored by the St Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, begins Thursday and Friday at 6 pm and Saturday and Sunday at noon. There will be Greek food and music, a flea market and entertainment / games. On Saturday and Sunday Tony Robles, one of the top pool players in the nation, will be playing in a professional billiards tournament at BQE Billiards in Jackson Heights.
On Friday, LIC Space has its October Reception beginning about 7 pm. Admission free but donations suggested for food / wine. On Saturday, beginning at 12 noon is the FIAO Columbus Day Parade in Astoria. The parade is one of Queens best and runs up along Steinway Street. Sunnyside Gardens Park hosts its Oktoberfest event beginning at noon. This is a family friendly event, with games and activities for kids, a cookout for adults and there are various booths selling arts and crafts. Admission is free but the food isn't. On Saturday night Cats Paying Dues starts at LPAC at 8 pm in Main Theatre.
On Sunday at the Queens Museum Of Art there's a reception for the closing of the Erasing Borders exhibit which begins at 4 pm. The Noguchi Museum hosts its second Sundays event which begins at 3 pm. Film, Books, Dance, Theatre This Weekend
Queens / October 1, 2009. This weekend the highs and lows will be in the sixties, with showers Saturday and scattered T-storms Sunday [so Sunday could be ok]. In a sweeping bit of irony, both PS1 and the Queens Museum Of Art [QMA] are hosting book fairs this weekend. PS1's is an artist oriented book fair that runs on Friday and Saturday from 11 am to 7 pm and on Sunday from 11 am to 5 pm. QMA's is a multi-lingual book fair that runs on Friday from 5 pm to 9 pm and on Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm. Authors published in multiple languages will be there.
In Flushing on Thursday, Queens Theatre In The Park starts its film series, showing old classics provided by the Museum Of The Moving Image in Astoria. The first film is Citizen Kane which shows at 7.30 pm and costs $10. In Long Island City from Thursday through Saturday beginning at 8 pm Henry V will complete its run at the Secret Theatre.
In Sunnyside, Thalia Theatre continues its run of Flamenco Soul starting at 8 pm on Friday and Saturday and 4 pm on Sunday. Admission $30. In Jackson Heights on Sunday there's a GAHS tour of the Lent Riker Homestead beginning at 3 pm and costs $20. The homestead is one of the oldest in the city [1654].

Noguchi Museum In Long Island City
October 11: Second Sundays - Art and Artifact
At 3 pm on the Second Sunday of every month the Noguchi Museum hosts music or a discussion in either the garden or the lower level meeting room. In October the discussion will be by the architecture firm that did the Noguchi Museum renovations will talk about how they updated the museum space while trying to stay true to Noguchi's vision.
Through October 24, 2010: Noguchi ReINstalled
To celebrate the re-opening of the newly done garden, the complete collection of Noguchi will be on display. This is the first time since Spring 2002. Sculptures from all over the world will be returning to the museum in time for the opening.
The museum is open Wednesday through Friday 10 am - 5 pm, and Saturday - Sunday 11 am - 6 pm. Admission $10 / $5. First Friday of every month, pay what you wish. This is a video, sculpture and sound installation. A large 30 foot junk sculpture will occupy the 3,000 square feet main floor, surrounded by related works. This came out of the desert and is passing through on its way to Roma.

The In Practice Projects are a series the Sculpture Center does to give new artists their break. While I've only been to one In Practice [Winter 2009] I found it absolutely fascinating, especially when the artists explain their work.

The film portion of the event was cancelled this week [see front page story], but the food segment will go on beginning at 9.30 pm at Limoncello.
FILM PORTION CANCELLED. This year the festival was scaled back due to the loss of the Eagle Theater as the host film center. This year the Jackson Triplex on 82nd Street off Roosevelt Avenue [easy to access via the #7] will play host to the event. Hors d'oeuvres will be served prior to showtime and a reception will be held after the show at nearby Limoncella. The pre-theater reception begins at 6.30 pm, the short begins at 7.15 and the documentary begins shortly thereafter. A Q & A will be held after the screenings and the reception at nearby Limoncella after the Q&A. Admission $20.

FIAO hosts the Columbus Day Parade in Astoria beginning at 12 noon. The parade, one of Queens best, begins just south of Broadway and marches up Steinway, ending at the Columbus Triangle. This event is great for kids and the whole family as it is a beautiful show of pageantry and tradition. St Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church
October 8th through 11th: Greek Festival 2009
The 38th Annual Greek Festival is a traditional Greek festival which includes live Greek music, flea market and plenty of Greek food and games. The all weekend event begins at 6 pm on Thursday and Friday going until 10 pm and midnight respectively. The event location is St Nicholas Church at 196-10 Northern Blvd in Flushing. The event continues through the weekend, opening at noon on Saturday and Sunday and going to midnight and 10 pm respectively.

NYC Parks Department opened a new Olympic sized pool in Flushing Meadows Corona Park. You must bring a swimming suit, a swimming cap and quality padlock to be admitted.
