2012 Astoria Park Fireworks Photos & Brief Report

June 25, 2012 / Astoria / Queens Culture / Queens Buzz. We tracked the weather on the Doppler radar screen via Queens Buzz [see weather link on right side bar of front page] throughout Monday. The radar successfully predicted that there wouldn’t be any rain Monday night by show time, which is between 9.15 and 9.30 pm.

Nonetheless, we thought the torrential showers that plagued us Monday morning and returned briefly in the early evening, would cause people to shy away from the best Independence Day fireworks display in New York City. Happily, this was not the case.

Astoria Park Fireworks .. The Show Goes On

Rain, Rain, Went Away & Thousands Came Out To Play

June 25, 2012 / Astoria / Queens Culture / Queens Buzz. We arrived a bit late and missed the fire department’s water boat waterworks display, which started around 7.30 pm. The waterworks display is a lot of fun for the kids, as well as for the adults who like to see an impressive display of the fire department capabilities. My unofficial estimate is that in the neighborhood of ten thousand people came to see the fireworks. There were thousands on the Astoria Park Great Lawn and even more lined up along the East River waterfront on Shore Blvd which had been closed to autos.

As I sauntered down the hill of the Great Lawn I could hear the heavenly tunes of the jazz age being played by the Joe Battaglia Big Band. The mellow jazzy sounds, including keyboards, strings, sax & winds seemed to put the crowd into a relaxed mood. I met Transportation Alternatives biker Steve Scofield and his wife [see photos], who seemed to exemplify the mood of the crowd in this photo.

Along the waterfront there were people camped out with lawn chairs and coolers, and many standing along the rail. The police were patrolling the area to make sure that the scene remained relaxed and civilized, and we managed to get a photo of three of them [see photos]. The clouds in the sky gave the whole scene dramatic stage-like lighting, and the rains had broken the heat so that the air was fresh and clean. I walked up and down the shoreline during the fireworks, taking photos along the way, many of which you can see in the slide show.

The Astoria Park Fireworks event is organized by the Central Astoria Local Development Coalition [aka CALDC] which has been sponsoring these fireworks for many years. They also sponsor a series of free concerts and films in Astoria Park which you'll be able to find in the July Events Calendar on this site. Have a Happy Independence Day.
