The month of June marks the offical start of the summer. Graduations commence, weddings continue and summer vacations and family reunions begin. It's also the month when we honor fathers for their contributions to the life of the family.

Noguchi Museum In Long Island City
June 13: Second Sundays - Florent Ghys
At 3 pm on the Second Sunday of every month the Noguchi Museum hosts music or a discussion in either the garden or the lower level meeting room. In June, French musician / composer Florent Ghys presents a quirky combination: a home recorded minimalist music mix of classical and pop. Free with admission.
Thru October 24, 2010: Noguchi ReINstalled
To celebrate the re-opening of the newly done garden, the complete collection of Noguchi will be on display. This is the first time since Spring 2002. Sculptures from all over the world will be returning to the museum in time for the opening.
The museum is open Wednesday through Friday 10 am - 5 pm, and Saturday - Sunday 11 am - 6 pm. All programs are free with admission $10 / $5. First Friday of every month, pay what you wish. Click here to view a prior story about the Noguchi Museum in Queens.

PS1 Art Exhibits in Long Island City
Through October 18: Greater New York 2010
This exhibit showcases living artists in the NY area. It includes workshops, performances, film and music. A couple of highlights include an encased simulated rain forest and an Atlas of Radical Cartography showing global interconnectedness, such as copper from Nevada going to smelters in China. The lowest level of the building [aka basement] will be film oriented. The main floors highlighting the most important movies, concerts, fashions, exhibits, designs to have happened in the past five years. And they will run a 'rotating gallery' of four curators, each of whom will have about a month to exhibit something. The first one ends on June 13th and the second one begins on June 19th.

Queens Museum Of Art [QMA] Exhibit in Flushing
Through October 3: The Curse Of Bigness
Looks like an interesting exhibit exploring opposites, such as large and small as the theme. An example given includes a miniature panorama [small] of NYC [big]. Another is a video of a woman wearing an expensive ornament switches from a business suit into a jail suit. At least one of the exhibits incorporates aspects of the museum itself.
Perennial Exhibits: Panorama Of New York City & Tiffany Glass Collection
The panorama of the city of New York, created for the 1964 World's Fair and updated in the 90's is impressive to see at least once in a lifetime. And they also have a Tiffany Glass collection.
The first Sunday of every month is free from 1 - 4 pm, compliments of the MetLife Foundation. Sculpture Center - Long Island City
June 3: Incohative Listening + Centerless Portrayal
From 8 pm - 12 midnight. Tom Thayer's ecclectic sound, puppetry and animation, followed by Yuji Agematsu's slide projection and field recordings. There will be musical performances given throughout the evening in the museum and courtyard.
Through July 26: Knight's Move
This exhibit derives its title from the game of chess and is a multi-dimensional exploration of numerous abstract art themes.

From 7 - 9 pm on most first Fridays of the month, they host an opening reception, at their Fardom Gallery 25-17 41st Street in LIC. This week they will have live music [a band named Anti-Social Music] and, as yet undisclosed works on display. Admission free.

June 5: Science Fair
Opens on June 5th and open for visitation on the 5th, 6th, 12th and 13th from 12 noon to 6 pm. This exhibit uses the grade school science fair as a milieu in which to explore the impact of science on art. Done in collaboration with another art collective: The Metric System.
June 10: Flux Thursdays
On the second Thurday of every month, Flux Factory has an 'artists open mic' which begins at 8 pm. This month poured paint collages, a performance and the Science Fair Exhibit will be in full swing. Admission free, but donations welcome.

From 7 - 11 pm. A documentary film is showcased at this fund raiser. $10 minimum donation.
Through July 17: Jack In The Space
Heng-Gil Han curates an exploration of space. For example what happens if Jackson Pollock's drips get unraveled? Is there space between the layers of paint? This exhibit attempts to make the art felt, rather than be seen.

Socrates Sculpture Park - LIC / Astoria
June 4, 5 & 6: Makers Market
On Friday there's a fundraiser wherein you can have first dibs on shopping the Makers Market which is an assemblage of artists' and craftsmen's works in objets d'arte, accompanied by hors d'oeuvres and drinks - for this night only - $50 admission. On Saturday and Sunday the market opens at 11 am and closes at 7 pm and 5 pm respectively - admission is free but no food / beverage. On Saturday and Sunday there will also be other entertainment of sorts.
June Through August 1: Cityscape
The new summer exhibit is Cityscape: Surveying The Urban Biotope. The exhibit explores natural and man made elements in the context of the urban environment. Admission free.

Almost every evening they have something going on, most of which is stand up comedy, but also an occasional play or musical performance. Usually the fun begins at 8 pm, but times may vary. Admission is generally free except for special events - but there's generally a free space to just sit and have drinks or food as the Creek has many rooms. And they provide a comfortable informal ambiance, a bit like being at a nice lodge or a great coffee house for people after of college.

June 12: Flag Day Parade
Starts at 11 am near Greenpoint Avenue and 41st Street, ending at 48th Street. This will be followed by events at Joe Sabba Park at 49th Street in the middle of Queens Blvd. One of the oldest flag day parades in the city.

The good weather is on its way and the street fair season has finally begun. The following is a starting list and you can click on this link to view a listing of the Queens Street Fairs of 2010, which includes maps of locations for most of the street fairs in Queens last year.
June 6: Queens Pridefest Jackson Heights

June 24: Caribbean Music Festival - Meta & The Cornerstones / Ruff Stuff
From 4 - 7 pm along 160th Street and Jamaica Avenue in Jamaica Queens. Free.
June 26: Juneteenth Event With Chashama
From 12 noon to 9 pm at the Jamaica Performing Arts Center [153rd Street and Jamaica Avenue] in Jamaica. Free.

June: Kayaking Continues
Kayaking begins on Sundays in late May and runs through September / October depending on weather. Times are 12 noon on 5/16 and 5/30 and 1 pm on 5/23. June 20: Tour De Queens Bike Ride Sign Up Begins Online

Al Oerter Recreational Facility
June: Public Indoor Basketball Court, Computer Labs, Exercise Rooms, Handball Court, Dance Studio & Ping Pong Tables In Queens
This is a beautiful, relatively new facility. They are open Monday through Friday 6 A - 10 P and Saturday 9 A - 5 P. Closed for important holidays. Bring padlock for locker and a change of clothes for athletics.

Belmont Race Track In Jamaica NY
June: Racetrack Open
Use the following links for more current info. The horse race track is generally dark on Mondays and Tuesdays, but will close for the Christmas holiday week. NYC Parks – Indoor Swimming In Queens NY
June: Aquatic Center & World Class Ice Rink
NYC Parks Department opened a new Olympic sized pool in Flushing Meadows Corona Park. You must bring a swimming suit, a swimming cap and quality padlock to be admitted. There's also a world class ice rink in the same facility, wherein you can rent skates. Click on this link for a story about the Queens Ice Rink & Indoor Swimming Pool, including daily admission fees. The pool is open Monday - Friday from 6 am to 10 pm, Saturday from 9 am - 10 pm and Sunday from 9 am - 8 pm. Annual Fee is $75 adults / $10 seniors / and under 18 is free. At 8 pm. An art performance, which near as I can tell from the press release, seems to be a satire of the once popular televangelist Jimmy Swaggart. If memory serves me correctly, Jimmy fell from grace when he was caught cheating on his wife, with a Louisiana hooker. Admission $15.
