Noguchi Art & Sculpture Museum - Long Island City / Queens
June 14: Second Sundays - Taylor Brown
At 3 pm on the Second Sunday of every month during the summer the Noguchi Museum hosts live music in the garden. In June Taylor Brown a classical guitarist will perform. He has played with a number of well known folk musicians, including touring with Kate Taylor, whose brother is James. Through August 30th: From Plaster To Stone
In the 1940's Noguchi started to use small paper models to outline his intentions before he began working on a sculpture. These models, or maquettes, are shown with photographs of the final works.
June 17, 2009 through October 24, 2010: Noguchi ReINstalled
To celebrate the re-opening of the newly done garden, the complete collection of Noguchi will be on display. This is the first time since Spring 2002. Sculptures from all over the world will be returning to the museum in time for the opening.
The museum is open Wednesday through Friday 10 am - 5 pm, and Saturday - Sunday 11 am - 6 pm. Admission $10 / $5. First Friday of every month, pay what you wish. PS1 Art Exhibits - Long Island City / Queens
Through September 14: Florian Slotwana
This one sounds like fun. This Berlin based artist brings most of the large things in his apartment to the PS1 Museum and arranges them into an artistic exhibit by playing off of the exhibition space. This includes his washing machine, dining room table, kitchen sink and even wardrobe. When the exhibit is over these will be returned to everyday use.
Through September 14: Kenneth Anger
This is the first major survey of avant-garde film maker Kenneth Anger's work. Anger explores dreams, myths and desire in his movies, frequently mocking the Hollywood establishment.
Through September 14: Jonathan Horowitz And / Or
Jonathan Horowitz explores consumerism and the media in video, sound, sculpture and photography.
Through October 24: Leandro Erlich's Swimming Pool
The photo to the right shows Leandro's exhibit wherein people are standing 'inside' the swimming pool looking up through the 'water' to see spectators standing above them. June 28 - September 14: Young Architects Program 2009: afterparty
This is the tenth installation of the Young Architects Program. Shade, water, seating and bar areas for the courtyard was the focus of the 'urban shelter' project which was won by a New England architect firm by the name of MOS. Look for 'chimneys' and a 'bedouin tent' in the courtyard this summer which is designed to provide a cooling down place at one of the 'hottest' spots in Queens on a summer Saturday night. Crane St Studios / 5 Pointz Graffiti Art - Long Island City / Queens
June: Closed For Renovations Per Their Website
Crane Street Studios is home to many LIC artists' studios. The building itself is a canvas of sorts, which is used by artists to express themselves / show their work. The photo to the right shows one artist who took a short break from his graffiti work which is behind him.
When it resumes operations, weekend painting from 12 noon to 7 pm but permit required [see website]. The #7 subway line passes the building near the Court Square stop. Queens Museum Of Art [QMA] Exhibit - Flushing Queens
May 10 - September 27: Tarjama / Translation
An art exhibit by immigrants and their offspring from the Middle East and Central Asia. The photo to the left is one scene off of a very large and interesting wall hanging in this exhibit. I leave its interpretation to you.
May 31 - September 27: Red Lines Housing Crisis Learning Center
Large scale models, drawings, photographs and videos by Damon Rich about real estate.

May 27 [runs through September 5]: Past & Present Tense / Tiempos Del Subjuntivo
From 6 - 9 pm, there's an opening reception for Cuban born installation artist and sculptor Juana Valdes. Juana will present her exhibit in which she explores the Afro-Cuban cultural traditions in the context of race, migration and transcultural experiences. Admission free.

Socrates Sculpture Park - Long Island City / Astoria
May 10 - August 2: State Fair & Open Space
The State Fair exhibit uses the rural American farm fair as its main theme as you can see in the photo to the left where what seems to be a clay / mud tractor stands idle behind the golden farm fence in the foreground. The exhibits reference things one would find at state fairgrounds across the country, exploring the amusements, farming and pageantry of such events. The Open Space exhibit is a single exhibit, entitled the temple of Dionysos, which will run in parallel with the State Fair. The exhibits include a subway stop, a barn, a temple that looks like a tugboat, grasping hands, a snowflake and more. Check our photo gallery for photos of these exhibits, later in the month.

May 10 - August 2: The University Of Trash
This appears to be a free-form exhibit referencing themes of activism and grass roots efforts. Hard to describe without really experiencing it, which we haven't yet done.
May 10 - August 3: Rashid Johnson: Smoke And Mirrors
This is a first solo museum show by a mixed media artist who draws on an eclectic range of experiences including his ethnic hertiage.
May 10 - August 3: In Practice Projects
The 'In Practice Projects' which is an ongoing series put on by the Sculpture Center have shown themselves to be veeerrryyy interesting, and this round seems no different. The projects included are entitled: Psychics VIII, The Grave Is Empty, The Advisor, The Gods Must Be Crazy and two untitled ones.
Gallery hours are Thursday through Monday 11 am - 6 pm. Free admission, but a $5 donation is suggested.
