Things To Do In Queens - UPDATED 7/29/10
The month of July marks the middle of the summer. Hot days, warm nights & 4th of July fireworks. There are plenty of free things to do, such as concerts in the park, swimming at public pools, and shopping the fresh farmers markets and street fairs.
You can also cool down by going inside the art museums, the theaters, the restaurants and local shops.
No Macy's fireworks along the East River this year, only CALDC fireworks along the East River off Astoria Park..

Noguchi Museum In Long Island City
July 11: Second Sundays - Talujon Percussion Quartet
At 3 pm on the Second Sunday of every month the Noguchi Museum hosts music or a discussion in either the garden or the lower level meeting room. In July, the Talujon Percussion Quartet, an NYC based group, will perform. Free with admission.
To celebrate the re-opening of the newly done garden, the complete collection of Noguchi will be on display. This is the first time since Spring 2002. Sculptures from all over the world will be returning to the museum in time for the opening.
The museum is open Wednesday through Friday 10 am - 5 pm, and Saturday - Sunday 11 am - 6 pm. All programs are free with admission $10 / $5. First Friday of every month, pay what you wish. Click here to view a prior story about the Noguchi Museum in Queens.

PS1 Art Exhibits in Long Island City
July 3 - September 4: PS1 Warm Up Parties
From 2 - 9 pm. Every Saturday PS1 hosts a mix of live and DJ music in its courtyard. This year in the courtyard, the Young Architects Art installation is entitled Pole Dance, which is an acoustically tuned mix of nets, poles, balls and water. Access included with admission.
Through October 18: Greater New York 2010
This exhibit showcases living artists in the NY area. It includes workshops, performances, film and music. A couple of highlights include an encased simulated rain forest and an Atlas of Radical Cartography showing global interconnectedness, such as copper from Nevada going to smelters in China.

July & August: Target Passport Fridays 2010

Perennial Exhibits: Panorama Of New York City & Tiffany Glass Collection
The panorama of the city of New York, created for the 1964 World's Fair and updated in the 90's is impressive to see at least once in a lifetime. And they also have a Tiffany Glass collection.

Almost every evening they have something going on, most of which is stand up comedy, but also an occasional play or musical performance. Usually the fun begins at 8 pm, but times may vary. Admission is generally free except for special events - but there's generally a free space to just sit and have drinks or food as the Creek has many rooms. And they provide a comfortable informal ambiance, a bit like being at a nice lodge or a great coffee house for people after of college.

Tour De Queens Bike Ride
July 11: Tour De Queens Bike Ride
Registration begins at 8 am and the ride begins at 9 am. The 20 mile Tour De Queens Bike Ride begins at the Unisphere in front of the Queens Museum Of Art in Flushing Meadows Corona Park. This year the ride will wind through eastern Queens. It's not a non-stop fast ride as it is escorted by police and moves at a casual pace. It's family friendly and a good outing for those who wish to see the borough without worrying about traffic and for families who want to take their kids on a fun ride.

July: Public Indoor Basketball Court, Computer Labs, Exercise Rooms, Handball Court, Dance Studio & Ping Pong Tables In Queens
This is a beautiful, relatively new facility. They are open Monday through Friday 6 A - 10 P and Saturday 9 A - 5 P. Closed for important holidays. Bring padlock for locker and a change of clothes for athletics.

July 14 - 18; 21 - 25: Raft Of The Medusa
At 8 pm. Interesting play about drug addicts and gays with HIV / AIDs that gets its name from an 1816 shipwreck wherein 150 people dwindled down to 15 before being saved. It explores humanity under duress, including great feats of kindness and evil. Admission $15.
July 24: Secret Burlesque
At 11 pm. Modern dance performance with comedy and juggling. Admission $10.
July 31: Alex Chilton / Big Star / Boxtops
Runs from 5 pm - 10.30 pm. This show includes readings [5.30 - 7 pm], screening [7 - 8 pm] and a concert by Steve Wynn, Radio 4, Alice Texas and Anthony Rizzo. Admission $20.
July 29 - August 1; 4 - 7: 25th Annual Putnam Spelling Bee
At 8 pm and Saturday 8/7 matinee at 2 pm. A musical about teens puberty and nerves while competing in a spelling bee. Admission $18.
