We attended the Chinese New Year Parade in Flushing over the weekend and, as usual, it didn't disappoint. We understand that over 5,000 people participated in the parade, wearing fun, colorful, mythological costumes.

Photos Of Chinese Parade In Flushing Queens
[Editor's Note: Click here for the 2012 Chinese New Year Parade start time and parade route in Queens.] It was an unseasonally warm February day, with highs approaching the 40's. It was a bit overcast, but the sun would peek through the clouds from time to time. I arrived shortly after the parade had begun, and the organizers were hurrying the parade participants into the queue in order to keep the parade moving. They likely were doing so as this year the city has cut the length of parades by about 25% in order to save funds.
Chinese New Year Parade In Flushing Queens
I noticed many costumes I had seen last year, but there were many new ones as well. And a few costumes did not reappear. There were well in excess of 10,000 visitors attending the parade, although I don't have any official estimate. The nice thing about the Chinese New Year Parade in Flushing is that it's so spread out, that there's plenty of room for tens of thousands to view the parade without it feeling unusually crowded.
Flushing is now believed to be the home of the largest Chinese community outside of China, as it is believed to have surpassed Chinatown in Manhattan in this past decade. We'll report this statement as fact, if and when it becomes official in the 2010 census.
Flushing Chinese Business Association - Sponsor
The Flushing Chinese Business Association is the parade sponsor. This year they opened the parade to all ethnic organizations and you can see a mix of peoples in some of the photos of the parade. There were 32 organizations involved in the event.

February 9, 2011 / Flushing / Queens Buzz. The Chinese Lunar New Year officially began on February 3, 2011. This year the Chinese New Year Parade in Flushing will be held on Saturday, February 12th, 2011 beginning at 11 am and ending at about 1 pm. The parade will be followed by two hours of cultural events performed at Queens Crossing at 136-17 39th Avenue on the second floor.
We have covered the Chinese New Year Parade in Flushing for the past couple of years. It is one of the most splendid parades in the New York City Metro area, as well as one of the best parades of the year in Queens.
This is the year of the Lucky Rabbit. In the Chinese Zodiac it is believed that during this year good things will come to good people. I guess that means we're all going to have a good year.
