Real Estate Lending & MortgagesLending & CAREA / Chinese American Real Estate AssociationMay 22, 2010 / Flushing / Queens Buzz. On Saturday in Flushing there was a Real Estate Expo event hosted by the Chinese American Real Estate Association [CAREA] in Flushing. This expo is an evolution of the Home Buyers Expo, which was an event they had hosted last year with a private sponsor. The Home Buyer Expo had focused on issues such as how to find a house, how to take the house into contract and how to close on the house. Last year there were ten vendors at the expo offering financial, real estate and legal services. Real Estate Lending - Home Buying In QueensWe visited the expo in search of information about the state of mortgage lending in Queens. Given the Asians seem to be America's financiers, we thought this expo might be a good place to research this question. The following story is focused providing some background about CAREA and its events, as well as on the current state of mortgage lending in Queens. This year the CAREA event scope was expanded and it attracted about 40 - 50 vendors. The expo focus changed from buying a home, to buying and managing a home. Hence this year vendors included tax services, energy services, remodeling services as well as vendors offering financial, real estate and legal services. A Taste Of The World 2010 & PhotosQueens Leading Culinary Event Feeds HundredsMay 18, 2010 / Flushing / Queens Buzz. Queens leading culinary event happened last night at Caesar's Club in CitiField in Flushing in spite of a very dark wet drizzly evening. Hundreds of people came from around the borough to sample the food and beverages provided by some 30 or more vendors. We found a wide variety of cuisines to sample, and in the process learned a bit more about the culinary history of the borough. Two businesses received awards for serving the community for 80 and 50 years. These businesses continue to this day and were successfully handed from one generation down to the next. Queens History Is America's HistoryFlushing Neighborhood / December 13, 2009. My compliments to the six cultural and historic sites that participated in the annual Historic Holiday House Tour. On a rainy, but unseasonably warm Sunday, I traipsed through the streets of Flushing with historian Jason Antos visiting some of the most interesting historic sites in Queens. Each of these sites entertained visitors in different ways, from traditional apple cider, to old fashioned holiday songs with piano accompaniment, to a five piece jazz band [see photo]. The historic sites were fascinating and included two houses associated with religious freedom in America; one house associated with a talented nineteenth century African American inventor who was involved with patents for the lightbulb and the telephone and whose parents were instrumental in galvanizing support for the freedom of slaves; a beautiful well preserved Victorian era home; one of Queens important cultural centers; and the home of the Queens Historical Society - sponsor of the event. Kicking Back @ Satchmo'sThe Louis Armstrong House In CoronaCorona / July 19, 2009. I recently had the opportunity to visit the Louis Armstrong House in Corona as the guest of Deslyn Dyer the House Director. She put me on a house tour with Mackerrow Talcott who was well versed in the lives of the Armstrongs. The visit turned out to be much more than I had expected, as I came away feeling like I had kind taken the afternoon off to go hang out with Satchmo in his home. Visiting this house is not only a cultural journey into the King of Jazz's life, but a visit into the personal lives of Lucille and Louis Armstrong. Louis Latimer House In Flushing - A Bit Of Queens HistoryThe Lewis Latimer House was once the home of an African American inventor who worked with Alexander Graham Bell and Thomas Edison. While he has several patents to his name, his parents were instrumental in helping move the nation away from the institution of slavery. Hence, over time his home has grown to become a lens through which all Americans can look back into their past and see the influence of an African American family on the evolution of the national culture. Kingsland Homestead - History Of Queens NYThe Kingsland Homestead is a part of early American history.
