Dancing In The Ether
Dance Entropy Explores The Psyche of Time & Space
I was one of only a handful of people in the audience, as the dancers did one last rehearsal before their opening performance Thursday evening February 21, 2013. Click here for a short description of each performance and a slide show of Skimming the Surface at Green Space in LIC, as well as a bit longer exploration into one of the new pieces. The report also includes a couple of interviews with the dancers. The photo above shows the dress rehearsal performance and the photo at the top of this page is a shot of the performance of Skimming the Surface.

Astoria Park Performance Space
Draft Plans Shown – Public Comment Sought
City Councilmember Peter Vallone was credited with securing $4.5 million in NYC funds for the project, which he described as a beginning. There were a number of Astoria and Queens arts groups present at the meeting and they made comments following the presentation. We’ll post more about the Astoria Park Performance space later.

So You Think, YOU, Have A Tough Job?
Hear What This Centenarian Has To Say About Work
There are eight short comedic plays that run about two hours beginning at 8 pm Friday and Saturday and at 5 pm on Sunday. All are modern original works, with the holidays as the theme and the satire is keen.
In the photo to your right, Santa is complaining to his wife about all of the challenges he faces at work, that people just don't seem to fathom. For her part, Mrs. Claus complains privately that she feels like she's invisible.
We're taken into a number of holiday worlds like watching Scrooge's gift card business take on the internet. In another play, we find out that tens of thousands of Jews have secretly been breaking into people's homes Christmas Eve to play Santa, ever since the Jews were blamed for killing Christ. A telephone shopkeeper gifts her 'lovely daughter' to a complaining bachelor customer, who she thinks is pathetically 'alone in this world'. A young woman introduces a house-calling veterinarian to her 'big cat' and a librarian rents a car from a Godfather-like car rental agency, both on Christmas Eve.
A mother is confronted by her seven year old daughter who has just learned that Santa is a fake. And a green crusader offends those who love him when he grinds down the holiday fun with his environmental zealousness.

On The Square Productions Takes Us On A Journey Through Mythology, Religion & History
The storyline is a tangled journey through Greek mythology, Christian beliefs and Roman history with a conscious sprinkle of modern day wit. The performance began at 7.30 pm in the center of the park, which served as the perfect back back drop for such a play. The play opens with the Greek goddess Athena [renamed Minerva by the Romans] asking a Greek official to lead the Greek people away from Christianity, back to the Hellenic pantheon of gods.

What Are You Doing For Lunch Wednesday?
Swedish Craze, Lunch Beat, Comes To NYC via LIC
June 5, 2012 / Long Island City LIC / Queens Culture / Queens Buzz. A new craze has been sweeping Europe these past few months called Lunch Beat. It was started by a couple of people who thought it would be cool to release stress at lunchtime by dancing. So they invited some friends ... and the rest is history ... kind of.
The first lunch beat lunch is being hosted in the U.S. in NYC in LIC on Wednesday, June 6th at Uncanny Valley at 26-9 Jackson Avenue from 12 noon to 1 pm [click link above for map].
Dj Shakey will be providing the tunes, there will be a multi-media installation by the Patriots, lunch will be provided by Cinammon Snail which will be a Korean BBQ sandwich and the cost is $12 plus processing fee which you can buy online at LunchBeat on EventBrite. Here's a link to a story about Lunchbeat in Europe.
Lunch Beat set up about ten rules which 'must' be followed. About seven of them are that you must dance. One of them is that you're not allowed to talk about work, and another that the lunch beat event can only last one hour. It's an alcohol-free event.
LEAP Dance Performance Explores New Spaces
Queens Art Express Features New Works
June 18, 2012 / LIC / Flushing / Sunnyside / Queens Buzz. This weekend was a treat for those who ventured out into the borough to sample the artistic expression of Queens natives and friends. I started my adventures on Friday night, arriving just in time to see one of the more creative dance performances I have witnessed since Queens Buzz began. The LEAP Dance Project was performed at LaGuardia College Performing Arts Center to a near-full house. Choreographer / dancer Gabriel Forestieri is shown in these two photos performing Lobbytop.
We'll post a full report including photos of the LEAP dance program later this month.
