Highlights of the Astoria LIC Film Festival
I asked Dennis Cieri, one of the founders and current director of the festival what some of the highlights of the festival might be. He talked about Smolarze: Charcoal Burners, which is a short documentary about how charcoal is made in Poland. He talked about a documentary of the hurricane in Haiti, entitled Bound By Haiti, which was filmed by a crew in Haiti on another project. They filmed the island in the immediate aftermath of the storm. Burma Indictment was also mentioned, about the gentle Burmese people who live under a harsh dictatorship [see photo to your right].
On the lighter side was a film entitled Spok Anarchy which is about the punk movement in Seattle. And there's a local favorite, entitled the Apostles of Park Slope about an unlikely development of friendships following the death of a Brooklynite's mother.
