Queens NY / July 30, 2009. This weekend there are predictions for rain most of Friday and also later in the day on Sunday. Saturday looks good right now, but check the link on the left sidebar for weather updates, because the forecasts seem to change regularly. At 8 pm on Thursday and Friday and 5.30 pm on Saturday the Secret Theatre performs a series of original one act plays in its final weekend of the White Box Festival. On Friday the Queens Museum of Art hosts a free outdoor movie and dance starting at 7 pm. On Saturday the Louis Armstrong House in Corona has a jazz concert scheduled in its Japanese Gardens from 1 - 4 pm. A number of high school jazz bands will be performing. Also on Saturday the Sculpture Center in Long Island City has a concert that runs from 5 - 10 pm in their outdoor courtyard. Also in Long Island City Lucky Mojo's is having a 'House Party' that starts at 8 pm featuring four bands.
On Sunday the LIC Bar continues with its outdoor BBQ concerts, hosting 'Little Creatures' an indie pop rock band from 5 pm until 8 pm. Woodstock Weekend In Astoria Park
Astoria / July 23, 2009. This weekend in Astoria there's a rockfest featuring 50 acts on four stages that runs from 12 noon to 9 pm. The event is organized by Astoria Music and Arts in association with the Queens Council on the Arts and the City Parks Foundation. The weather is expected to be in the mid seventies and the chances of rain are in the low thirties, so it should be a fine day for some outdoor music fun. Bring your swim suit for a dip in the Olympic sized pool in the park, for which you'll need a padlock and proper swimsuit. And be sure to wear your sunscreen.
Woodstock Queens & More This Weekend
Queens / July 23, 2009. This weekend there's a huge rockfest in Astoria Park entitled Astoria Music Now [click link for location] on Saturday July 25th from 12 noon to 9 pm. The event will be managed from four different stages throughout the park featuring 50 acts; including live bands, DJ's, theater and dance. The event has been organized by Astoria Music and Arts. Also on Saturday evening from 5 pm to 10 pm at the Sculpture Center in Long Island City there's an alternative music and art event which is much more intimate as it's being held in the Center's courtyard [$7]. And there's the weekly Warm Up Party at PS1 which starts at 4 pm and goes until dusk [$10].
On Sunday at the Flushing Town Hall there's Calypso music in the courtyard starting at 2 pm. At 2.30 pm, also in Flushing at the Kingsland Homestead, there's a lecture about the history of Yankee Stadium. And on Sunday night there's a courtyard barbeque at the LIC Bar including live music from 5 pm to 8 pm. For event details, click this link or go to the Queens Events section.
There is the possibility of rain on each day, but generally the probabilities are below 50%, so while it may be cloudy, it likely won't rain ... much. Tonite there's a Queens Green Drinks event at the Dietch Gallery in Long Island City starting at 6.30 pm. Also starting at 6.30 pm the Kingsland Homestead in Flushing is hosting a lecture about Queens early polo grounds, one of baseball's historic fields.
Friday night beginning at 6.30 pm the Queens Museum Of Art [QMA] in Flushing continues with its summer dance and film series entitled 'Passport'. 'Grupo Latino Son' of Jackson Heights will dance, followed by a Columbian film entitled 'My Grandfather, My Father & Me'.
On Saturday beginning at 4 pm the Sculpture Center and QMA host a discussion about architecture called the 'Architecture Of Resistance' at the Sculpture Center in Long Island City. On Saturday night at 9 pm there's a performance by Gustavo at Waltz-Astoria in Astoria which we believe will be quite good. And on Sunday and all weekend beginning at 8 pm, the Secret Theatre in Long Island City will be performing its White Box Festival which is a series of one act plays which we reviewed and liked. Musician's Collage & Tour de Queens Bike Ride
Queens / July 9, 2009. This looks to be another great FREE event weekend for Queens, but bring your umbrella for the possibility [60% chance] of scattered thundershowers on Saturday afternoon. The rain forecast for Sunday is at 2 AM so no worry there and temperatures will be in the eighties during the day and sixties at night.
Friday evening there's Cello Rock at La Guardia Performing Arts Center at 8 PM featuring three classically trained cellists and a drummer playing rock. This should be good. Queens Museum Of Art opens its Friday evening summer series entitled passport which includes a dance performance in advance of an outdoor movie starting at 6.30 PM.
On Saturday evening Topaz Arts features a performance by Hector Canonge as part of the closing of his exhibition of Schema Corporeal. The performance, talk and reception goes from 6 to 9 PM. And on Sunday there's the Tour de Queens [see article below] Bike Ride and one of the last days to view the collages of Louis Armstrong at the Armstrong House in Corona [only paid event $8 / $6]. Tour de Queens Bike Ride Sunday
Queens / July 9, 2009. This Sunday the second annual Tour de Queens Bike Ride is scheduled to begin from the Unisphere across from the Queens Museum of Art in Flushing Meadows Corona Park. Sign up for the 500 available slots begins at 8 AM and the ride is scheduled to begin sometime between 9 and 9.30 AM. For complete details, click into Tour de Queens Bike Ride in Queens NY. The photo to your right is the panorama of the city of New York which was created for the 1964 World's Fair and was last updated in 1992. The 24 mile ride will be mapped out on the panorama for bikers to view in advance of the ride.

Queens / July 1, 2009. Well we're back on track with our events calendar. The full magilla now lies only one click away which you can access via the button on the top tool bar or a link at the end of this report. This weekend, no fireworks along the East River, but if you read the next story below, you can check out your other options for the evening. One we're particularly fond of is the PS1 Warm Up Party [click PS1 Warm Up Party for a story about it last year]. PS1 also just opened its summer exhibits, one of which is shown to the left, wherein they have published photos taken at the warm up parties since their inception. It's pretty interesting.
There are also many other things going on including the opening of the Queens public swimming pools at the Queens parks, golfing on the public golf courses in Queens, there are Queens historic sites to visit, Queens farmers markets, no Queens Street Fairs this weekend. PS1 presents its 11th annual season of warm up parties. Here, in their courtyard, amidst their latest young architects program installation [entitled Urban Shelter - Afterparty / more about this exhibit below], guests can relax in the summer evenings to the tunes of some great live musicians and DJ's throughout the course of the afternoon. The line up for these events are: July 4 - Reagenz with Jonah Sharp (Space Continuum) & Movie D (Extended Live Set) and Daniel Bell (DBX DJ Set), July 11 - Arthur's Landing plays the music of Arthur Russell, Danny Wang (Balihu / NYC Berlin) and MV Carbon & Aki Onda, July 18 - Agnes B Presents SPANK DJ's Sean B and DJ Will, Cheveu (Born Bad Label), Xeno & Oaklander (Wierd Records - fyi spelled correctly - now that's weird) and DJ Pieter (Wierd Records), and July 25 - Alexi Delano (AD Music NYC), Derek Plaslaiko (Bunker / Specral Queens), and Elliott Sharp's Carbon with others.
This is the tenth installation of the Young Architects Program. Shade, water, seating and bar areas for the courtyard was the focus of the 'urban shelter' project which was won by a New England architect firm by the name of MOS. Look for 'chimneys' and a 'bedouin tent' in the courtyard this summer which is designed to provide a cooling down place at one of the 'hottest' spots in Queens on a summer Saturday night.
These parties start at 2 pm and go until 9 pm each Saturday night. Admission to the museum during these parties is $10 vs a $5 donation on other days. Food and beverages are sold at this event. This is the eleventh annual festival of international film, music, dance and food. March: Flushing Meadows Corona Park Aquatic Center & World Class Ice Rink
NYC Parks Department opened a new Olympic sized pool in Flushing Meadows Corona Park. You must bring a swimming suit, a swimming cap and quality padlock to be admitted. The themes for these one act plays include tourist sites, romance in the modern world, runaway love, a sure fire investment scheme, discovery at a sperm bank and friends vs lovers.
All starting at 8 pm [except 7/25 at 4 pm and 8/1 at 5.30 pm], The White Box Theatre Festival, which is an evening of one act plays. This is being put on in collaboration with The Queens Players and The Ampersand Review. Admission $15.
