Noguchi Museum In Long Island City
April 11: Second Sundays - Guided Tour Of Garden With George Pisegna
At 3 pm on the Second Sunday of every month the Noguchi Museum hosts music or a discussion in either the garden or the lower level meeting room. In April, horticulturalist George Pisegna will talk about the plants and shrubbery in the garden. Free with admission.
Thru October 24, 2010: Noguchi ReINstalled
To celebrate the re-opening of the newly done garden, the complete collection of Noguchi will be on display. This is the first time since Spring 2002. Sculptures from all over the world will be returning to the museum in time for the opening.

Saturdays In April: Performance Series
Generally from 4 - 6 pm [but some programs have started as early as noon] PS1 hosts two performance art vignettes. These cross a wide range of subjects and perspectives; and virtually anything goes in the use of mixed media and materials. We frequently post specifics on Thursday on the front page.

Marina Abramovic's Chair For Man And His Spirit will be hosted in the PS1 courtyard. This chair was made for a 1997 opening.

This only lasts a week and appears very interesting, although it's limited to about a dozen posters. It's the propaganda posters used by both sides to promote the war in Vietnam.

Fifty photographs from the QMA collection depicting laborers in the 20th century.
Thru April 25, 2010: Ongoing Exhibits Extended
Duke Riley is a follow up exhibition of the staged war held last August. Daniel Bozhkov is an interesting collection of relics of the past and some interesting perspectives of today using frames he creates for current / past views. And O Zhang is a collection of children's creations of what their parents' native lands look like to them.
Perennial Exhibits: Panorama Of New York City & Tiffany Glass Collection
The panorama of the city of New York, created for the 1964 World's Fair and updated in the 90's is impressive to see at least once in a lifetime. And they also have a Tiffany Glass collection.

This is an opening day program starting at 10 am with an introduction, a guided tour beginning at 11.30 am [exhibits along & just off Jamaica Avenue], a video slam from 11.30 am - 9 pm, artists talks from 2 - 5 pm, performance art from 11 am - 6 pm and a reception from 6 - 9 pm. It hasn't been confirmed yet, but I believe admission is free.

From 7 - 9 pm at the Fardom Gallery [see map link below]. Opening reception for new work by six female artists. The exhibit explores human consciousness between wake and dream states and includes mixed media, including sound compositions and reflections.

April: Comedy Nights At The Cave
Almost every evening they have something going on, most of which is stand up comedy, but also an occasional play or musical performance. Usually the fun begins at 8 pm, but times may vary. Admission is generally free except for special events - but there's generally a free space to just sit and have drinks or food as the Creek has many rooms. And they provide a comfortable informal ambiance, a bit like being at a nice lodge or a great coffee house for people after of college.

Museum Of The Moving Image In Astoria NY
April: Spring Break Ends April 9th
The museum will be open from 10 am to 5 pm on these dates. There will be a 'Moving Pictures Workshop' starting at 11.30 am for ages 6 - 12 which runs for 45 mintues and there's a materials fee of $5 per child. There are also a workshop on 'Stop Motion Animation' that begins at 1 pm and also at 2.30 pm. There are also gallery demonstrations on the Kinetoscope, Sound Editing and Video Game Technology. At 11, 12.30, 2 and 3.30 pm pm there will be a film showing entitled 'A Town Called Panic'. The film is one of the first award winning stop motion films and it's about three toys that mistakenly order 50 million bricks. For Adults with Kids / Children.
April: Behind The Screen
These core exhibits are about how films / movies are produced, including showcasing vintage equipment. There are a number of interactive kiosks where kids can play, while learning about how the moving image is created and manipulated. Five Boro Bike Tour
April: Sign Up For May 2nd 5 Boro Bike Ride
The only way into the 42 mile Five Boro Bike Ride is to sign up with one of the charities which includes making a $300 plus donation.
But for spectators of the May 2nd event, the ride begins at Battery Park, runs north past Macy's & the NY Public Library into Central Park, north thru Harlem, circling back south along the FDR. It then crosses the Queens Boro Bridge and heads north to Astoria Park for the first rest stop. Then south over the Pulaski Bridge, thru Brooklyn onto Staten Island via the Verrazano Bridge. This is a beautiful, relatively new facility. They are open Monday through Friday 6 A - 10 P and Saturday 9 A - 5 P. Closed for important holidays. Bring padlock for locker and a change of clothes for athletics.

NYC Parks Department opened a new Olympic sized pool in Flushing Meadows Corona Park. You must bring a swimming suit, a swimming cap and quality padlock to be admitted. Tonite LIC Space hosts a reception entitled Art, Jewelry & Jazz starting at 7 pm in LIC.
Queens kicks off April with a whole slew of art event closings at PS1. Note that the details of most events posted here and many more are included in our April Queens Events calendar - click on top tool bar link or this photo.
But there are also openings and ongoing programs too. QMA opens The Art Of War which has a one week run showing propaganda posters during the Vietnam War [see photo to right].
This is also the last weekend that the Chocolate Factory Theatre hosts its short run of Object Collection's The Geometry [scroll down for review]. This weekend the Secret Theatre will also end its run of Othello.
And we've posted the first DRAFT of the April Queens Events calendar, which includes details for all events here and between 50 - 100 cultural events going on in Queens this month.
This Weekend - Dance Festival Begins
Thursday night Three Sisters Vanishing begins its two weekend run at the LaGuardia Performing Arts Center in LIC. This production is the work of LPAC faculty member Ozbilgin Brandon and was influenced by Chekov's Three Sisters [theater]. Also in LIC on Thursday night, Flux Factory hosts its artist open mic on Flux Second Thursdays [art]. Also in LIC, but on Friday at the Fardom Gallery, there's an exhibit opening reception by LIC Space for Bedtime Stories, Monotone Dreams beginning at 7 pm [art].
On Saturday in Jamaica there's an all day long event at the Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning [JCAL] introducing the exhibit Art As Action. This exhibit is being curated by Heng-Gil of JCAL and events begin at 10 am including tours, talks and a reception from 6 - 9 pm [art]. In Flushing on Saturday, at Queens Theatre In The Park, Beauty & The Beast is playing in two matinees [theater], and at night there's a performance of Ragtime & Jazz [music]. And on Sunday, also at Queens Theatre In The Park in Flushing the grammy award winning Jubilation Choir will be performing at 4 pm. Lastly, there's a book lecture about Jamaica Estates, the details of which have been posted in the Members Calendar which is also shown in the Queens Events Calendar. And the weather will be good, except on Friday [see report below].

Cooler & Othello Open / 3 Sisters Vanishing To End

In LIC, the Chocolate Factory has begun showing a new production, entitled Cooler which began Thursday and runs this weekend and next [Theater]. Details of all events mentioned here may be found by clicking this photo or link of the 'Queens Events button above; and then clicking on the section link denoted in parentheses eg [Theater]. On Friday night in LIC at the LaGuardia Performing Arts Center, Three Sisters Vanishing will be performed starting at 8 pm. This is a new work by a Queens playwright which is an adaptation of Chekhov's work Three Sisters.
Green Space Blooms Dance Festival continues Friday through Sunday [Dance] in LIC. Also in LIC and running through the weekend, is the opening of Othello starring Richard Mazda, the founder of the Secret Theatre and Queens Players. Vampire Lesbians Of Sodom is also playing at the Secret Theatre throughout the weekend [Theater].
On Friday and Saturday nights in Astoria, at Waltz-Astoria, is Music Showcase which is the performances by two talented musicians in an intimate lounge performance [Live Music]. In Flushing, on Saturday, at the Flushing Town Hall, jazz musican John Blake will perform in the afternoon in tandem with his wife Charlotte who is a professional storyteller, in a matinee for kids. At night there will be jazz performance for adults [Live Music].
And of course there are many other events, including numerous ongoing art exhibits, listed in our Queens Events calendar, as well as a number of events which have been booked in the 'Members Calendar'. You may find 'Member Events' under the 'Community' section along the left side bar and in scrolling through most sections of this site. Thursday night the Queens Economic Development Corporation hosts a seminar on accessing Capital [$] and there are also a couple of local wine tastings on Friday and Saturday. Enjoy.
