Queens Employment Fueled By Building Boom
Queens is currently experiencing a building boom, with the epicenters in the neighborhoods of Long Island City, Astoria, Flushing and to a lesser extent Jamaica. In addition to the creation of temporary construction jobs which end when the building has been completed, some of the new commercial developments have targeted white collar office space, which has then been used to lure large commercial tenants from other boroughs, into Queens. Bloomingdales was one such recent company to announce a large move [a return] into Queens.

Unemployment In NYC By Borough
Manhattan was the only other borough to do better than Queens County, coming in with a 4.7% unemployment rate. Both Richmond County [Staten Island] and Kings County [Brooklyn] came in at 5.9% and the Bronx trailed the pack, coming in with a 7.7% unemployment rate.
New York City Reduces Unemployment By 2% Points, While New York State Reduces Unemployment by 1% Point
Most of these unemployment rates aren’t significantly different versus June of 2015, but do represent a significant improvement versus July of 2014. The New York State labor force grew 0.7% to 9.8 million while the New York City labor force grew 1.2% to 4.2 million year over year, while the unemployment rates for New York State dropped from 6.5% to 5.4%, while the New York City unemployment rate dropped even more significantly from 7.6 to 5.6%.
Overall, New York City had a 5.6% unemployment rate, which was slightly above the New York State unemployment rate of 5.4%.
