The Macy's 4th of July fireworks will be shown along the East River this year. They were shown along the East River in 2014 for the first time since 2008. Mayor de Blasio had lobbied the change, which now spans three years.
Weather. Highs will be in the mid 80's during the dayand in the high 60's at night. As no rain is forecast it should be a near perfect night.
The Grucci Brothers will be doing the Macy's 4th of July fireworks in NYC. They have been doing fireworks for many years and the Macy's July 4th fireworks in Manhattan for decades.
The Astoria Park Fireworks on June 30th were also done by the Grucci Brothers, the same fireworks company doing the Macy's 4th of July fireworks in NYC. The Astoria Park fireworks in Queens were shown on Thursday evening with an easy view from the Astoria Park location right alongside the East River. See story below about the Astoria Park Fireworks show of 2013 in Queens.

In 2009 they moved the Macy's 4th of July fireworks to the Hudson River on Manhattan's west side claiming they'd moved it there to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson's discovery of the river. The Macys 4th of July fireworks display remained there until July 4th 2014 when they returned to the East River.

The Macy's 4th of July fireworks will be lit upon the East River again this year. There will be FIVE barges this year, continuing the number of barges used last year as two of the barges will be positioned in the East River between 27th and 32nd streets on the Manhattan side.
In essence this has the effect of expanding the viewing options for an audience estimated to be in the hundreds of thousands. The show will be more easily viewable from the shores of Long Island City, the clear and high points of Sunnyside and likely Astoria as well.
Best Viewing Locations For 4th of July Fireworks Queens 2016
Blocks along the East River within local neighborhoods on both sides of the river will be cordoned off by the police. This effort begins around 3 to 4 pm in the afternoon and tightens up as the crowds gather. The fireworks are expected to begin about 9.20 pm but you'll need time to get into position. It's also recommended that you forego the lawn chairs and other extra baggage to the extent you can, especially the later you move into position, as this will not just encumber you getting through the crowd.
Looking at the red upside down obelisks, on the map below, from bottom left to top right you see: The location of the northern most fireworks barges in the East River. Gantry Park and the southern tip of Roosevelt Island provide good viewing locations. Queens Bridge Park is also located along the East River, just north of the Queensboro Bridge. The last two locations, Socrates Sculpture Park and Astoria Park are furthest away, but this year, because of the two northern barges, may be eligible viewing locations - but we don't know this since it's the first year.
The 4th Of July Fireworks 2016 Continue at Jones Beach, Long Island
This year there will be again be 4th of July fireworks at Jones Beach State Park on Long Island. This was one of the New York State budget cuts beginning in 2010, which affected the deployment of police officers to provide security at the event. The Governor and the New York State Parks announced that these cuts have been restored in 2015 and that the fireworks on Jone Beach in Long Island will continue this year.
Public Transit From Queens To Jones Beach
The LIRR leaves from the Jamaica Station every half hour beginning at 5.05 pm and arrives in Freeport 21 minutes later at 5.26 pm [5.35 / 6.05 etc]. From there you take the N88 Long Island Bus. The off peak one way train fares are $5.25 at the ticket office and less via the web and more buying onboard. I believe a round trip package is available for $13.50 per person, so ask for it. Jones Beach is a nice quick getaway from the city and based on hearsay from last year, not as crowded.
Please note that the ticket prices mentioned above are from 2012 and may have changed, but provide you will a ballpark estimate.
Fireworks 2016 In Queens - Astoria Park Was The Place To Be - On Thursday, June 30th
Queens residents had a third fireworks option previously this week: the July 4th fireworks 2016 in Astoria Park on Thursday, June 30th. It was a near perfect night as the highs Thursday were around 80 and the lows in the high 60's, and no rain.
The Central Astoria Development Coalition sponsors an annual fireworks display in Astoria Park, generally around the end of June. The Queens Symphony Orchestra started warming up the crowd around 7.30 pm by playing classical music from the 19th & 20th centuries on a stage overlooking the East River in front of the great lawn of Astoria Park [between the pool and Hellgate Bridge]. While many Queens residents attend this event [it seems to have become increasingly popular over the past ten years], this year there was still ample room to throw a blanket, enjoy a snack or late picnic dinner and enjoy the show.
