Noguchi Museum In Long Island City

February 3: First Fridays

Museum stays open until 8 pm with a pay-what-you-wish admission. There's a cash wine & beer bar and the garden is a great place to relax.

February 12: Second Sundays

At 3 pm. Artist / scientist mixer on what can be done on climate change. Free with admission.

Through April 22, 2012 : A Civic Action

Isamu Noguchi and Mark di Suvero founded the Noguchi Museum and Socrates Sculpture Park in the 80's in what was then a pretty obscure neighborhood. Things have changed significantly since then and this exhibit highlights four artists' vision of the future for the neighborhing Astoria / LIC community.

The museum is open Wednesday through Friday 10 am - 5 pm, and Saturday - Sunday 11 am - 6 pm. All programs are free with admission $10 / $5. First Friday of every month, pay what you wish. Click here to view a prior story about the Noguchi Museum in Queens.

PS1 Art Exhibits in Long Island City

Through May 14: Darren Bader Images

This exhibit contains sculptures of animals. The intent is to help animal shelters and save species. Salads will be served Mondays at 2.15 pm and Saturdays at 3 pm.

Through March 12: Clifford Owens Anthology

Clifford Owens performs a number of scores prepared by contemporary African American artists exploring a multitude of themes. His work includes photography, video and performances exploring the theme that African American art has been under-recognized.

Through April: Henry Taylor

Contemporary artist Henry Taylor paints on canvasses and everything else, like bottles, cans, shirts etcetera, lending a unique perspective to his work.

Ending February 29: Chim Pom, Surasi Kusolwong, Francis Stark & Rania Stephan

In order presented: Chim Pom is a Japanese artist collective that explores social issues and this exhibit is about the 2011 nuclear incident in Japan. Surasi, a Thai artist, explores looking for treasure in industrial / consumer waste and invites you to participate. Francis Stark is an animated video exploring changing relationships and behaviors arising from modern methods of communication. Lebanese film artist, Stephan explores the life of Egyptian actress Soad Hosni and the modern Arab woman.

Scene, Hold, Ballast is a collaborative work involving film and sculpture and what appeared to be a very self-absorbed description of the works.

In Practice with the theme you never look at me from the place from which I wee you is about location / contextual based perception. Admission is usually a donation of between $5 - $15.

February 4 - May 20: Queens International - Three Points Make A Triangle

Opening Reception 2/4 from 6 - 10 pm. The last time QMA hosted one of these we were very impressed [see link below]. This is an exhibit opening that features numerous artists from around the borough and incorporates the borough's diversity into the overriding theme of the exhibit. Free with admission.

Flux Factory - Long Island City

February 3 -10: Banquet For America

10 am - 10 pm every day. This is an installation that is an experimental village built within the Flux Factory gallery. Bakers, jewelers,barbers, puppeteers and smorrebroad makers live and eat together. Events are generally free with suggested donation.

February 9: Flux Thursdays

At 8 pm on the second Thursday night of every month, the Flux Factory holds a potluck dinner / art symposium. Free with food contribution.

Through March: Words Become Air - LIC Artists

February: Public Indoor Basketball Court, Computer Labs, Exercise Rooms, Handball Court, Dance Studio & Ping Pong Tables In Queens

This is a beautiful, relatively new facility. They are open Monday through Friday 6 A - 10 P and Saturday 9 A - 5 P. Closed for important holidays. Bring padlock for locker and a change of clothes for athletics.

NYC Parks – Indoor Swimming In Queens NY

February: Aquatic Center & World Class Ice Rink

Both facilities open year 'round. Bring a swimming suit, a swimming cap and quality padlock to be admitted to the pool. And you can rent skates to use the world ice arena [both in the same buillding]. The pool is open Monday - Friday from 6 am to 10 pm, Saturday from 9 am - 10 pm and Sunday from 9 am - 8 pm. Annual Fee is $75 adults / $10 seniors / and under 18 is free.
