APRIL is the month of rain, taxes, Passover, Easter and nature blooming once again. The days are much longer and lighter.

In the photo above, you can view the traditional evening procession through the streets in Astoria Queens, celebrating the Greek Orthodox Good Friday.

This month the Guggenheim's Stillspotting comes to Jackson Heights, the Green Space Blooms Dance Festival is in LIC, a Come To Fashion Show is in Jamaica, a Turkish Play in LIC, and a Queens-wide music festival.

Noguchi Museum In Long Island City

April 8: Second Sundays

At 3 pm. A discussion about the neighborhood vision exhibit [see below]. Free with admission.

Through April 22, 2012 : A Civic Action

Isamu Noguchi and Mark di Suvero founded the Noguchi Museum and Socrates Sculpture Park in the 80's in what was then a pretty obscure neighborhood. Things have changed significantly since then and this exhibit highlights four artists' vision of the future for the neighborhing Astoria / LIC community.

The museum is open Wednesday through Friday 10 am - 5 pm, and Saturday - Sunday 11 am - 6 pm. All programs are free with admission $10 / $5. First Friday of every month, pay what you wish. Click here to view a prior story about the Noguchi Museum in Queens.

PS1 Art Exhibits in Long Island City

Through May 14: Darren Bader Images

This exhibit contains sculptures of animals. The intent is to help animal shelters and save species. Salads will be served Mondays at 2.15 pm and Saturdays at 3 pm.

Through April: Henry Taylor

Contemporary artist Henry Taylor paints on canvasses and everything else, like bottles, cans, shirts etcetera, lending a unique perspective to his work.

Three Points Make A Triangle exhibit features numerous artists from around the borough and incorporates the borough's diversity into the overriding theme of the exhibit.

At 8 pm on the second Thursday night of every month, the Flux Factory holds a potluck dinner / art symposium. This month presentations by four artists. Free with food contribution.

Begins at 6 pm. A conceptual reality game, includes video from street scenes, the audience and social media sites fashioned into a game, highlighting the loss of privacy in a surveillance world.

April 7: The Titanic

Begins at 1 pm. A classic film entitled 'A Night To Remember' will be shown, followed by a discussion about the disaster that occurred a century ago. Admission free.

April 14: Walking Tour of Jamaica

Begins at 12 noon. Tour of Prospect Cemetary, one of NYC's oldest cemetaries [1688], the newly restored Chapel of the Sisters and King Manor. Admission $25 / $20. Meet at the southwest corner of Jamaica Ave and Pasons Blvd, opposite the movie theater.

April 21: The Human Family Tree

From 1 - 3 pm. On Labor Day Weekend in 2009 on 30th Avenue in Astoria a team of National Geographic scientists swabbed the cheeks of some 200 random New Yorkers to reveal how we are all cousins in the "family of man". Admission free.

April 15: Images of Rail - Jamaica Station

Begins at 2.30 pm. David Morrison, historian and former LIRR branch manager, presentation about the Long Island Railroad [LIRR]. The LIRR is the oldest railroad still operating under its original name and the busiest. It carries 265,000 people daily, on 735 trains, over 700 miles of track on 11 different branches, ten of which converge in Jamaica Station. Admission $8 / $5.

Begins at 11 am. Tour primarily of Jamaica Avenue, home to centuries old homes, churches and cemetaries. Admission $15 / $10. Meet at Airtrain entrance, no reservations required.

April 29: Movie Palaces of Queens

Begins at 2.30 pm. Cezar Del Valle traces the evolution of movie theaters in Queens from the palaces of the 1890's to the multiplexes of today. Admission $8 / $5.

Greek Orthodox Holy Friday Processions

April 13: St Demetrios, St Catherine & St George, St Markella

Begins at 10 pm for St Markella & at 9 pm for the others. Traditional Greek Orthodox Holy Friday procession through the streets of Astoria. The processions commemorate the death of Jesus. The processions begin and end at each church and generally last between 30 to 60 minutes.

The following performances are being performed in collaboration with the Queens Symphony Orchestra's 1001 Voices Musical Festival which runs from April 14th - 29th.

Jamaica Center For The Performing Arts

April 14: To The New World - QSO 1001 Voices Concert

Begins at 7 pm. Opening night festival with red carpet. Discover the immigrant experience in Queens via Dvorak New World Symphony and Cello Concerto featuring QSO soloist winner 2011, Jung-Hsuan Ko. April 19: Concert Preview Lecture

April 20: Songs Of A Wayfarer - QSO 1001 Voices Concert

Begins at 8 pm. Featuring composer Justice Chen and Met Opera singer Jennifer Zetlan. Admission free but believe you can rsvp at Flushing Town Hall the day of the concert [call to confirm - see home page link below].

Kupferberg Center At Queens College

April 29: 1001 Voices Concert

Begins at 3 pm. Three movement symphony, 1001 Voices, in multi-media world premiere. Admission free.

April 19: Financing The Reduction Of Building Energy Loads

Begins at 10 am. The presentation will be given at the Queens Chamber of Commerce in the Bulova Corporate Center at 75-20 Astoria Blvd, Suite 140 in Jackson Heights.


April 25: LIC YMCA Strong Kids Fundraiser

From 6 pm. Benefit for scholarships for kids who can't afford the Y. Fundraiser includes wine & spirits, live music and hors d'oeuvres. At Court Square W&S on 25-20 Jackson Avenue in LIC. Admission $25 contribution which you can rsvp by clicking here.


April 28: Rockaway Earth Day

From 10 am - 5 pm. This is a ping pong competition is being held at the Chinese Community Center at 43-17 Union Street, Level C in Flushing. We're uncertain of this, but might be free admission.


Al Oerter Recreational Facility

April: Public Indoor Basketball Court, Computer Labs, Exercise Rooms, Handball Court, Dance Studio & Ping Pong Tables In Queens

This is a relatively new facility. They are open Monday through Friday 6 A - 10 P and Saturday 9 A - 5 P. Closed for important holidays. Bring padlock for locker and a change of clothes for athletics.

NYC Parks – Indoor Swimming & Ice Skating In Queens NY

April: Aquatic Center & World Class Ice Rink

Both facilities open year 'round. Bring a swimming suit, a swimming cap and quality padlock to be admitted to the pool. And you can rent skates to use the world ice arena [both in the same buillding]. The pool is open Monday - Friday from 6 am to 10 pm, Saturday from 9 am - 10 pm and Sunday from 9 am - 8 pm. Annual Fee is $75 adults / $10 seniors / and under 18 is free.

At 7.30 pm. Matinees at 2.30 pm on the 12th, 18th & 19th. Original production of script about rural teenagers coming to modern day Istanbul. The play continues to evolve into a universal process of the rural poor coming to the city to find a better life. On-Stage Theater. Admission $10.

April 20: Slavery Project

Begins at 7.30 pm. Original production, including autobiographical accounts by descendants of slaves. Admissions range $15 / $20 / $10.

The Secret Theatre In LIC Long Island City
