Summer is in full swing. A number of community groups in collaboration with the NYC Parks Department and frequently some measure of government funding, have put together a summer full of films and free summer movies in the parks. The foreign films and free movies listed below are designed for young and old alike and they're FREE.

  • Thursday, July 13, 2017 from 7 - 10 pm - PHILIPPINES.
  • At 7 pm a Special Preview of performances by the Queensboro Dance Festival participants [20 minutes]. At 7.30 pm the group Kidning Sindaw dances traditional Philippine dances in order to preserve part of their indiginous culture.
  • At 8 pm Transit (Hannah Espia, 2013, 93min, Tagalog & Hebrew with English ST) about "when the Israeli government begins deporting the children of migrant workers in 2009, a woman on an expired visa struggles to hide her half-Israeli daughter, Yael—a rebellious teenager caught up in a juvenile romance, and Joshua, a four-year old boy left in her care ... the film examines what it means to be a family and what it means to be a stranger, within one’s home and in a foreign land."
  • Thursday, July 20, 2017 from 7 - 10 pm - ECUADOR.
  • At 7 pm a concert by Chota Madre fusing indigenous African music with that of Ecuadorian Metizos [Spanish / Indian descent].
  • At 8 pm a film entitled DreamTown / Cuidad de los sueños (Betty Bastidas, 2016, 75 min, Spanish with English ST) about soccer players striving to succeed - free summer concerts & movies in front of the Queens Museum.
  • PLEASE NOTE THAT THE END OF JULY / AUGUST 2017 MOVIES HAVE NOT YET BEEN PROVIDED.

No Raindates. In case of rain, performances will be held inside Queens Theatre in the Park and admissions will be made on a first come, first serve basis. Seating capacity is 472.

Join us in celebration of black history as we screen "Hidden Figures," a film about a team of African-American female mathematicians who served a vital role in NASA during the early years of the U.S. space program."   • OUTDATED - Thursday, August 25, 2016 - begins at 7.40 pm - Saving Jamaica Bay - an independent film from the Queens World Film Festival - free summer movies in Flushing Queens.

These films were organized by the Queensboro Hill Neighborhood Association, Ltd. Last year it was done in collaboration with the Queens World Film Festival and this year the one movie was done in collaboration with CCM Peter Koo.

KEW GARDENS

Kew Gardens Film Festival - August 4 - 12, 2017

The Kew Gardens Film Festival opening party on August 4th will be held at Austins Ale House in Forest Hills. Most of the films will be shown at Kew Gardens Cinemas at 81-05 Lefferts Blvd in Kew Gardens. A few films will be shown at the Queens Museum in Flushing Meadows Corona Park.

Confronting strict ideology and cultural differences, the band struggles to get their songs through the needle’s eye of censorship before they can be unleashed on an audience never before exposed to alternative rock music.   • At 8.30 pm - Chevalier [Greece] - This is a Greek comedy, wherein a 'pack' of men aboard a yacht in Greece, set about to determine which of them is best. Aaron Hillis of the Village Voice says, “An inspired, gorgeously photographed work of deadpan lunacy.”

NOTE: In 2016 there were films shown at Sargeant Collins Park at Broadway & 58th Street by the Northern Woodside Coalition. At present we have not heard of this program being resumed. If this changes, we will post an update as new information becomes available.

Two Sunnyside Film Festivals remain ACTIVE in 2017. One is the Boulevard Film Fest which is shown indoors and the Flicks in the Garden which is shown in Sunnyside Gardens Park.

  • Thursday thru Sunday, July 20 - 23, 2017 - Boulevard Film Festival will show over two dozen independent films at various times at Thalia Theater & the Dog & Duck Restaurant. $22 / night. Organized by the Boulevard Film Festival.
