Free Things To Do In Queens, Shakespeare in the Park: Free Theater In The Park In Astoria, LIC, Long Island City, Sunnyside, Woodside, Jackson Heights, Corona, Flushing, Jamaica

free summer theater queens free summer theater astoria lic sunnyside woodside jackson heights flushing jamaica free summer theatre queens nycAugust 12, 2021 / Queens Neighborhoods / Queens Theater & Performing Arts / Queens Things To Do / Queens Buzz NYC.

Summer is in full swing. A number of community theater and dance groups in collaboration with the NYC Parks Department and frequently some measure of government funding, collaborate to provide Queens neighborhoods with a summer that includes free theater in the parks. The theatrical productions listed below are designed for young and old alike and they're FREE.

Summary of What to Expect When Scrolling Down 2021

FYI UPDATE SUMMARY - Many of the free summer theatrical productions in Queens are performed by Hip to Hip Theater Company in Woodside and sponsored and hosted by the NYC Parks. At present they are still in talks regarding the summer program which generally starts in mid to late July and runs through August. We'll keep you posted as we hear more.

Other than that the action seems to be at Socrates Sculpture Park in Astoria / LIC and at the Queens Theater in Flushing Meadows Corona Park. While so far nothing appears scheduled for Athens Square Park in Astoria, we remain hopeful, but not expectant as the CoVid pandemic has impacted many small businesses that generally supported these programs.

  • Thursday, August 5, 2021 beginning at 7.30 pm / Hip to Hip Theater Free - Antonio & Cleopatra - This Shakespearean play has been characterized as a tragedy, comedy and romance all in one. It is about Marc Antony, a famous general and one of the triumvirs of Rome, who took the constitutional republic into an autocratic state [sound familiar?]. The play is about Marc Antony's relationship with Cleopatra, who was the last active ruler of Egypt from a long line of pharoahs. Egypt, ruled by Cleopatra, was a client state of the Roman Empire, which was divided among the triumvir dictators, each of whom had a slice of the empire. Antony had the eastern section which included Egypt, and he and Octavia were rivals, so Antony married Octavia's sister to avoid civil war. But Antony cheated on her with Cleopatra and eventually war broke out, and the Egyptian fleet, at a critical moment, fled. It's considered Shakespeare's most complicated depiction of a female character.

To be sure there's a myriad of other characters and twists and turns in the plot to keep the audience paying attention as the old bard theatrically explores the vagaries of love.
