Noguchi Museum In Long Island City

February 13: Second Sundays - Woodstock Artists' Colony

At 3 pm. Art Professor Tom Wolf will talk about the influence on Noguchi, of other Asian artists who gathered around the Woodstock area. One of Noguchi's famed works, Lynched Figure [see photo], was created while he was in Woodstock. Free with admission.

Eighteen artists explore the concept of performer and audience in an exhibit that explores TV talent shows, social media and government surveillance.

February 5: Saturday Sessions - Sweet Tea & Inner War Cookies

From 4 - 6 pm on the third floor of the Main Gallery. Anne Apparu hosts Sweet Tea & Inner War Cookies. Includes musical accompaniment to trigger collective meditations on violence and community. Included with admission.

February 19: Saturday Sessions - Lauren Devine & Patrik Sandberg

From 4 - 6 pm on the third floor of the Main Gallery. Audio-visual performance. Included with admission.

Through April 4: Feng Mengbo

Interactive video game installation by Beijing artist who plays off of Super Mario Brothers and Street Fighter II. The game includes government propaganda and the hero is a Red Army soldier.

Through February 17: Structure Has A Life With Personality

We live inside of and surrounded by buildings. In this exhibit ten artists explore our association / interaction with buildings as an art form with personality. QMA cites its own building as one with multiple personalities having first been erected as the pavillion for the 1939 World's Fair, after which it became home to the first United Nations convocation and is now an art museum.

Perennial Exhibits: Panorama Of New York City & Tiffany Glass Collection

The panorama of the city of New York, created for the 1964 World's Fair and updated in the 90's is impressive to see at least once in a lifetime. And they also have a Tiffany Glass collection.

The first Sunday of every month is free from 1 - 4 pm, compliments of the MetLife Foundation. Begins at 6.30 pm. This film is about Turkey's attempt to manufacture its own cars, and how inner and external forces resisted the idea. The movie is based on history, set in the 1960's and about 23 engineers who manufactured a number of cars in 130 days. The movie is in Arabic with English subtitles. Admission Free.

chinese new year 2011Begins at 11 am and generally lasts two hours. The new year is based on the lunar year [America is on the solar year] and this is the year of the Rabbit, a generally lucky sign.

The parade route generally starts along 37th Avenue and runs south along Union Street to Sanford Avenue, then comes back up along Kissena to Main Street and ends at 37th Avenue near the Crossing Arts mall.

This is a beautiful, relatively new facility. They are open Monday through Friday 6 A - 10 P and Saturday 9 A - 5 P. Closed for important holidays. Bring padlock for locker and a change of clothes for athletics.

And you can rent skates to use the world ice arena [both in the same buillding]. 8 pm on 2/16, 4.30 & 6 pm on 2/17, 4.30, 6.30 & 8 pm on 2/18 an 2/19. This is an experimental theater program which explores audience / theater interaction and all relationships by association. There are only six audience slots open per performance.
