Noguchi Museum In Long Island City

February 8: Second Sundays - Poetry In The Presence Of Sculpture

At 3 pm on the Second Sunday of every month the Noguchi hosts Dialogues on Art, Architecture and Design. In February in the Main Gallery Christopher Stackhouse, Paul Foster Johnson, and Cathy Park Hong will present original work written directly in response to Noguchi or thematically in keeping with the ideas of community and identity.

Over 40 works from all aspects of Noguchi's work.

In Portraiture, full figure bronze sculpture Undine appears in its first public appearance since the 1920's, alongside a gallery room of the museum's collection of busts. The Undine sculpture is life size and shown in the photo at left. This magnificent work of art is a must see.

Through March 22: The Space Of The Work And The Place Of The Object

This is a "group exhibition that considers the status of the art object within the context of its production". This exhibit explores the artistic process.

Through March 22: In Practice Project Series

Eight emerging artists' explore a range of topics. The media used varies widely from performance art, to interactive art and on. Looks interesting.

The Creek & Cave In Long Island City

February - Saturdays: Derrick Comedy - This Is New York

Derrick Comedy's new movie 'Mystery Team' premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January. They will be doing stand up routines every Saturday, beginning at 8 pm. Admission Free.

February 10 & 24: Jackson Avenue Jazz

This is a guitar and keyboard jazz duo that plays solo or with guest musicians. This starts sometime between 8 pm and 10 pm and admission is free.

February 15, 16, 19 & 20: The Bros Play

At 8 pm in the Little Theater the Jazz Jam Series presents bassist / composer Alpert Yilmaz. He is well known by musicians as a child prodigy in Turkey. Jazz Jam is part performance and part open mic, wherein local musicians can sign up [in advance] to jam with the keynote performer. Admission $13 / $10.

February 13: Exiled

'Exiled' is being shown as part of World Cinema Showcase which is a collaboration with the Musuem Of The Moving Image. The film is about two friends who become hit men and take on a Macau crime organization. Starts at 7 pm. Admission $10 / $8 and free for museum members.

Nick Bruel will read from his book 'Bob And Otto' at 12 noon and 1.30 pm. That same day from 11 am - 5 pm the American Society of Civil Engineers will provide a number of exhibits / events to teach kids about building things like bridges, tunnels and buildings.

February 18: Science Of A Circus

At 12 noon and 1 pm come see Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus performers explain how they perform their feats. Tickets will be dispensed on a first come / first serve basis.

The puppet exhibit is about Chinese puppetry which began in the 15th century as a means of passing on folk tales [from Taiwan]. The Little Windows exhibit contains photographs and paintings of China by Marc Josloff who will visit the Town Hall on Saturday, February 21 to talk about his work. Free with general admission.

March 1: St Patrick's Peoples Day Parade

The annual St Patty's Day Parade begins at 2 pm in Sunnyside at 43rd and Skillman Streets. If you arrive at the starting point somewhere between on time and early you can hear the local politicos give speeches. The Parade winds its way up Skillman to Woodside Avenue and 61st Street. NYC Parks Department opened a new olympic sized pool in Flushing Meadows Corona Park. Annual Fee is $75 adults / $10 seniors / and under 18 is free. You must bring a swimming suit and quality padlock to be admitted. The pool is open Monday - Friday from 6 am to 10 pm, Saturday from 9 am - 10 pm and Sunday from 9 am - 8 pm.
