Supreme Court Re-writes Constitution

Gives Legal Entities Rights To Meddle In Electoral Process

supreme court ruling on corporation donationsQueens / January 21, 2010. This is an opinion piece about the Supreme Court campaign finance ruling in favor of giving legal entities the right to spend unlimited sums of money in support of political candidates. Our opinion is that legal entities should not be allowed to spend any resource whatsoever in support of a political candidate.

If the people governing a legal entity [regardless of whether it is a corporation or a labor union] want to donate money or resource to a candidate, let them do so as individuals.  But disallow them from reaching into the pockets of their shareholders, employees or membership to further their own special interests.  Let these people [shareholders, employees and members] speak for themselves.

We compare this ruling to what happens in the book 'Animal Farm' written by author George Orwell in the middle of the 20th century, whereby some of the pigs in the book are made more equal than others.  Our argument is that these people already have too much power vis a vis everyone else, and their unchecked influence will be harmful to the republic. Supreme Court Campaign Finance Ruling

Campaign Finance Ruling Gives Rights To Legal Entities In Electoral Process

January 21, 2010 / Queens NY / Opinion. The Supreme Court began re-writing the Constitution of the United States today. In an Orwellian fashion, the court ruled that legal entities can spend as much money as they want to help elect anyone they want. They speciously argued that to do otherwise is a limit on the First Amendment right of free speech.

I would argue that to limit legal entities meddling in the U.S. electoral process, in no way limits any citizen's First Amendment right of free speech. Disallowing legal entity interference in elections removes the unbridled use of a collective megaphone by small groups of individuals within these [generally] large legal entities, and thereby makes the electoral process more fair.

Court Ruling Makes Legal Entities More Equal Than U.S. Citizens

Legal entities are not democratically run organizations, as our government was intended to be. Legal entities are governed by a few people who generally manage the legal entity from the top of it. These small groups of people who control legal entities, exercise power over all of the resources owned by the stakeholders, and manage all of the efforts of the employees of the legal entity.

These small groups of people already have far greater power and resource than everyone else. To increase their power even further, and to disempower everyone else even more; is exactly the scenario described in George Orwell's book 'Animal Farm', where ultimately some pigs [in the book] ended up being 'more equal' than all of the other pigs [in the book].

Supreme Court Campaign Finance Ruling Diminishes Power Of The People

It has been the empowerment of the people of this nation that has enabled it to be so productive. And it is exactly this sort of creeping disempowerment of the people, that may ultimately lead to its downfall. I would argue that legal entities are not people and hence have no right to interfere in the electoral process at all. These legal entities should forbidden any role in the electoral process whatsoever, including the spending of any resource to aid any persons in seeking elected office.

To allow legal entities unchecked influence in the electoral process is essentially to give our government away to powerful interests, thereby taking it away from the people. Oftentimes the goals of these entities are at odds with the communal interests of the people. We the people pay the cost of special interest malfeasance in the form of polluted air, unclean water, a severely weakened financial system, grand scale exportation of jobs, special interest military engagements and more.

Let Legal Entity Individuals Express Themselves Like Everyone Else

Supreme Court ruling on campaign finance 2010

If the individuals within a corporation, union or other legal entity wish to spend their time and / or their money influencing the outcome of an election, let them do so in the same manner as everyone else - as individuals - not as more equal legal entities.

Disallow anyone from reaching into the pockets of their shareholders, employees and memberships to further their own special interests. Let these people [shareholders, employees and membership] speak for themselves.

Let us hope that "a government of the people, by the people and for the people" does not soon become a government "of the special interests, by the special interests and for the special interests".

Don't Tacitly Consent To Being Marginalized - Do Something

In the United States Declaration Of Independence it is stated that, "Governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed." Our forefathers fought for their rights with guns. We must fight for our rights by taking action with emails and phone calls.

Please contact the federal government officials who representative you to express your concern about this ruling. Ask them to immediately pass a simple campaign finance law prohibiting involvement in the political process by anyone other than individual human citizens [ie. a law that simply states that there will be no campaign spending nor campaign interference by anyone except individual human citizens].

Tell them that legal entities, which can be easily influenced and even subtly controlled, by people or entities from other countries, have no Constitutional rights in the U.S. electoral process.
