Noguchi Museum In Long Island City

February 14: Second Sundays - Conversation With Isamu

At 3 pm on the Second Sunday of every month the Noguchi Museum hosts music or a discussion in either the garden or the lower level meeting room. In February, Dore Ashton, art historian and friend of Isamu Noguchi will talk about the art and the man.

To celebrate the re-opening of the newly done garden, the complete collection of Noguchi will be on display. This is the first time since Spring 2002. Sculptures from all over the world will be returning to the museum in time for the opening.

Saturdays In February: Performance Series

From 4 - 6 pm PS1 hosts two performance art vignettes. These cross a wide range of subjects and perspectives; and virtually anything goes in the use of mixed media and materials. February 6th features a 'hair transplant' and a 'participatory video shoot'.

Performance and art exhibit. In November it included two performance art events. If there are more we will post them here as we become aware of them.

Through April 5, 2010: Christian Marclay 2,822 Records

2,822 records of all kinds of music fastened to the floor in a large room where people can walk on them.

Through April 5, 2010: 1969

From the MOMA collection, a number of works done in and around 1969 will be on display in an art year theme. The works are done in nearly every medium.

Through March 1, 2010: Leandro Erlich's Swimming Pool

About some 60 different art works by 54 contemporary Korean artists, oftentimes exploring cross cultural themes.

Duke Riley is a follow up exhibition of the staged war held last August. Daniel Bozhkov is an interesting collection of relics of the past and some interesting perspectives of today using frames he creates for current / past views. And O Zhang is a collection of children's creations of what their parents' native lands look like to them.

Perennial Exhibits: Panorama Of New York City & Tiffany Glass Collection

The panorama of the city of New York, created for the 1964 World's Fair and updated in the 90's is impressive to see at least once in a lifetime. And they also have a Tiffany Glass collection.

From 5 - 7 pm there will be a reception for the opening of a group exhibit of some sixteen international artists. They use Franz Kafka's verse from Leopard's In The Temple as the theme. Delving into issues of transformation and paradox in a multi-media format. Should be good.

Almost every evening they have something going on, most of which is stand up comedy, but also an occasional play or musical performance. Usually the fun begins at 8 pm, but times may vary. Admission is generally free except for special events - but there's generally a free space to just sit and have drinks or food as the Creek has many rooms. And they provide a comfortable informal ambiance, a bit like being at a nice lodge or a great coffee house for people after of college.

Museum Of The Moving Image In Astoria NY

February 13 - 21: Presidents Day Holiday

The museum will be open from 10 am to 5 pm on these dates. There will be a 'Moving Pictures Workshop' starting at 11.30 am for ages 6 - 12 which runs for 45 mintues and there's a materials fee of $5 per child. There are also a workshop on 'Stop Motion Animation' that begins at 1 pm and also at 2.30 pm. There are also gallery demonstrations on the Kinetoscope, Sound Editing and Video Game Technology. At 11, 12.30, 2 and 3.30 pm pm there will be a film showing entitled 'A Town Called Panic'. The film is one of the first award winning stop motion films and it's about three toys that mistakenly order 50 million bricks. For Adults with Kids / Children.

February: Behind The Screen

These core exhibits are about how films / movies are produced, including showcasing vintage equipment. There are a number of interactive kiosks where kids can play, while learning about how the moving image is created and manipulated. Queens Fashion Week

February 18, 19 & 20: Queens Fashion Week - NOTE NEW DATES

Queens Fashion Week has been re-scheduled to next week due to inclement weather. For three nights, in Queens, at various locations, Queens Fashion Week. Click here to read preview story about Queens Fashion Week 2010.

The first runway showing will be on Thursday, from 6 - 9 pm. And the final runway showing will be on Saturday from 7 - 9 pm. Both the first night and the final night runway shows will be at Standard Motor LOFTS in LIC [location closer to main areas of Astoria and Sunnyside].

On Friday Queens Fashion Week celebrates young designers from 5 - 9 pm at the Manhattan View Holiday Inn in LIC - Long Island City.


Chinese New Year Parade 2010 Queens Flushing

February 20: Chinese New Years Parade

The year of the tiger parade begins at 11 am on Saturday. It will be followed by a fireworks display in the street adjacent to Queens Crossing [about 12.30 or 1 pm]. Following the fireworks, there will be a number of cultural performances on the second floor of the Queens Crossing Mall. About 2,000 people are expected to participate. The parade starts at 37th Avenue and Union Street. It snakes south on Union, turns west on Sanford Avenue and then south again along Main Street - all in Flushing. It's probably one of the three best parades in Queens that I've witnessed [Columbus Day and St Patricks Day] and should be seen at least once. Al Oerter Recreational Facility

February: Public Indoor Basketball Court, Computer Labs, Exercise Rooms, Handball Court, Dance Studio & Ping Pong Tables In Queens

This is a beautiful, relatively new facility. They are open Monday through Friday 6 A - 10 P and Saturday 9 A - 5 P. Closed for important holidays. Bring padlock for locker and a change of clothes for athletics.

NYC Parks – Indoor Swimming In Queens NY

February: Aquatic Center & World Class Ice Rink

NYC Parks Department opened a new Olympic sized pool in Flushing Meadows Corona Park. You must bring a swimming suit, a swimming cap and quality padlock to be admitted. World premiere by choreographer Angel Gil Orrios, in collaboration with writer Jorge Luis Borges and composer Astor Piazolla with original music and musical direction from 2007 Latin Grammy Award winner Raul Juarena. Super Bowl Weekend Goes On Without NY Teams

Sculpture Center LIC Leopards In The TempleFebruary 4, 2010. In LIC on Friday night at 8 pm a modern dance entitled 'The Really Big Once' is being performed by a up-and-coming dance company at the LaGuardia Performing Arts Center and admission is free. Romeo & Juliet return to the stage all weekend long at the Secret Theatre in LIC at 8 pm starting Thursday night. There's a premiere tango performance at the Thalia Theatre in Sunnyside beginning at 8 pm on Friday and Saturday [Sunday at 4 pm].

On Saturday in LIC at PS1 from 4 - 6 pm, there's another installment of performance art which is part of PS1's Saturday Sessions program. This week it's a 'hair transplant' and a 'participatory music / dance video shoot'. Also on Saturday at Waltz-Astoria in Astoria there is a Singer Songwriter Showcase with three acts starting on the hour, beginning at 8 pm. In LIC the Sculpture Center is open with the exhibit 'Leopards In The Temple' [art].

On Sunday, the Queens Historical Society is hosting a presentation of the 'Underground Railroad' starting at 2.30 pm in Flushing. Also in Flushing on Sunday the Queens Museum Of Art has an opening reception for an exhibit of Dominican artists, starting at 1.30 pm. And Sunday night the Cavalier Restaurant in Jackson Heights, a legendary 1950's lounge, is hosting a Superbowl XLIV party, which will also be the last evening the iconic lounge is open for business. Remember # 7 Subway Weekend Service Suspended between NYC and Queensboro Plaza. This weekend, the # 7 subway service stops after 11 pm Friday nights and resumes Monday morning before 6 am. You may still use the E, F, N, W and Q subways to cross the East River.

Queens Fashion Week Rescheduled To Next Week

tango thalia theatre sunnysideQueens / February 11, 2010. Thursday night there's what should be an excellent jazz concert at 8 pm at the LaGuardia Performing Arts Center in LIC [music]. On Friday at 7 pm and Saturday at 8 pm, there will be some comedy acts at Waltz-Astoria, in Astoria [comedy]. Also starting on Friday and performing through the weekend, there will be tango performances at Thalia Spanish Theatre in Sunnyside [theater]. Also all weekend long in LIC at the Secret Theatre there are two performances, running in two separate theaters, of Servant To Two Masters and The Importance Of Being Earnest [theater]. On Saturday in Flushing at Queens Theatre In The Park, Bianco returns to serenade his audience at 8 pm [music]. In LIC on Saturday at 4 pm, I believe PS1 will continue with its performance series, although I don't have the specifics of this weeks show [art].

And on Sunday, Happy Valentines to all. Flushing Town Hall is hosting an Pan Asian jazz ensemble starting at 2 pm in Flushing [music]. And in LIC, the Noguchi Museum is hosting its Second Sunday event, which this month will include a former contemporary and friend of Isamu who is giving a lecture [art]. Lastly, Monday is Presidents Day, and the Museum of the Moving Image will be open throughout the week with exhibits and movies for the family [film]. Lastly, due to inclement weather, the Queens Fashion Week was postponed, and re-scheduled to next week [history / culture]. Enjoy.

Walk Down The Runway Begins Tonite

Queens Fashion Week 2010Chinese New Year Parade & More This Weekend

Astoria & LIC / February 18, 2010. This weekend, beginning tonite at the Standard LOFTs on Northern Blvd along the Astoria / LIC border is the first evening of the three day Queens Fashion Week extravaganza. The second night at the Holiday Inn in LIC is dedicated to young designers. And the runway returns to Standard LOFTS on the last day [Saturday] and includes fashion related exhibits during the day [history / culture].

On Saturday in Flushing, the Chinese New Year Parade, includes some 2,000 participants who will celebrate the lunar new year. This event will be followed by cultural events at the Queens Crossing Mall, as well as Flushing Town Hall [historic / cultural & music]. Since the weather will be sunny with temperatures in the low 40's we expect a sizeable crowd.

There are many other events afoot in the borough this weekend, including jazz in Jamaica, performance art, dance and theater in LIC, dance / theater in Sunnyside and a fundraiser / performance by a relatively new theater group in Jackson Heights. Snowstorm Leads Up To Weekend

Snow Abates Friday / Saturday & Shows Will Go On

Queens Events Feb 2010Queens / February 25, 2010. I suppose the big news is that we're expected to get between 8 to 12 inches of snow over the next 24 to 36 hours, and that flurries will continue into the weekend. Two weeks ago they predicted over a foot of snow and we received less than half that. In Long Island City at the Secret Theatre beginning at 8 pm from Thursday through Saturday there's an original work being performed entitled 'In My Free Time I Self Destruct'. Also at the Secret Theatre an enactment of Mozart's Opera 'Cosi Fan Tutti' is being performed throughout the weekend [theater].

On Friday in Astoria there's jazz at the Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden starting at 8 pm [music]. Also in Astoria on both Friday and Saturday nights beginning at 8 pm at Waltz-Astoria there's a musicians showcase featuring two to three performers per night [music]. In Sunnyside at the Thalia Theatre the tango 'Borges and Piazolla' will run all three days, with a special Meet The Performers Night being held on Saturday [theater]. In Jamaica on Friday night, the Mount Moriah AME Church is sponsoring a free youth talent showcase called Black Lite Cafe [Members Calendar].

On Saturday in Flushing there's a Lunar Tea Ceremony at the Flushing Town Hall beginning at 2 pm [music]. In Corona, near Jackson Heights, at the Louis Armstrong House also beginning at 2 pm there's a lecture about Louis' role in the Civil Rights movement [History / Culture]. And from 12 - 6 pm at PS1 in LIC there are several performance art acts going on including Brooklyn Is Burning, Try Cry Try and But I Wasn't Young Anymore [Art].

On Sunday in Jamaica at the Afrikan Poetry Society there are two performances of Calypso Swing at 3 and 5.30 pm [History / Culture]. In Flushing at the Kingsland Homestead the Queens Historical Society will present a slideshow about an archeological dig of slaves quarters on the northern shore of Long Island [History]. And in Astoria at 3 pm Goliard Concerts is hosting a cocktail reception to raise funds for their summer classical concerts in the park at the Cronin's & Phelan's Bar & Restaurant [Members Calendar].

And on Monday at the Greater Astoria Historical Society beginning at 7 pm there's going to be an interesting presentation by the great-grandson of Emanuele Ronzoni of the Ronzoni Macaroni Company of Queens - see events calendar for time / location details. Also, just a reminder, but Sunday, March 7th is the St Pat's Day Parade in Queens NY neighborhoods of Sunnyside and Woodside.
