Sunnyside Gardens Landmark Designation Approved By New York City Council
Sunnyside / October 30, 2007. On Monday, October 29th, 2007 the City Council approved a landmark designation for Sunnyside Gardens, an area located within the Sunnyside section of Queens. The intent of the designation is to preserve this section of Sunnyside by enforcing guidelines for any changes made to the buildings and landscape contained within the area.
Sunnyside Gardens was first developed in the 1920's [1924 - 1928] using an urban planning model that attempted to integrate urban construction with open apace. Among others, Eleanor Roosevelt was one of the early supporters of the effort. At the time she was the wife of the popular New York governor: Franklin Roosevelt. The area is currently one of the most integrated neighborhoods in the world, in which the Irish, Italians, Ecuadorians, Mexicans, Indians, Turks, Pakistanis, Koreans, Chinese and others live.
Prior to the designation, there was wide disagreement regarding its approval, with many residents strongly opposed to it. Their concerns included higher taxes as well as a higher cost of maintenance. Under the designation replacements and improvements of existing construction must be carried out within the guidelines of the designation articles. Leading up to the approval many residents worked quickly to make changes they had contemplated prior to having to execute them within the code. As a result the aesthetics of Sunnyside Gardens have improved noticeably in 2007.
