Art
August – PS1 is running four exhibitions which run into mid September. They are: 1) Arctic Hysteria: New Art From Finland, 2) Olafur Eliasson, 3) That Was Then … This Is Now and 4) an PF1 [Public Farm One]. PS1 is an extension of MOMA and any one of these exhibits is likely worth the visit. PS1 is located at 22-25 Jackson Avenue [@ 46th Avenue] and their website is www.ps1.org. 718.784.2084. There’s an admission fee, their hours are 12 – 6 pm, and they are closed Tuesday and Wednesday.

August 23, 25, 30, 31 – Painting season is here! From 12 noon – 7 pm. 5 Pointz is located on Jackson Avenue and Davis Streets [23rd Street] in LIC. Their website is www.5ptz.com.
Comedy
Tuesdays – Comedy Land which is a series of stand up comedy acts at 9 pm. Free. This event is held downstairs next to the dining room every Tuesday at the Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden which is located at 29-19 24th Avenue [at 33rd Street] and being co-sponsored by Pilsner Urquell and the Czech Center of NY. Film / Movies
August 18 / Monday – Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix Movie starting at 8 pm [sundown] in Astoria Park Lawn which is off Shore Blvd between Hell Gate Bridge and the pool. Bring your own blanket or chair. This event is sponsored by Central Astoria Local Development Coalition and the parks department of nyc. August 20 / Wednesday – Outdoor Movie, Duck Season, starting at sundown which is around 8 pm. Refreshments stand open at 7 pm. Socrates Sculpture Park is located at Broadway and Vernon Blvd in LIC. Bring your own blanket or chair. The sponsors of this event are the Museum of the Moving Image and the Socrates Sculpture Park. August 24 / Sunday – Outdoor Movie starting at 7.30 pm. A Czech film with English subtitles entitled Mysterious Castle In The Carpathians. This event is being held at the Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden which is located at 29-19 24th Avenue [at 33rd Street] and being co-sponsored by Pilsner Urquell and the Czech Center of NY. Entrance is free and the Beer Garden website is www.bohemianhall.com.
August 31 – Outdoor Movie starting at 7.30 pm. This is a Czech film with English subtitles entitled Prague. It’s being held at the Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden. See their August 24th event for location and other key details.

August 23 – PS1 Warm Up from 3 pm – 9 pm. In conjunction with their new exhibit from Finland titled ‘Arctic Hysteria: New Art From Finland, a number of Finnish groups are performing including Jimi Tenor & Kabu Kabu, Op:L Bastards, DJ Poodlecannon, Michael Evans' Swirling Lotus Blossom Bandits Band. August 31 - Irie Jamboree from 1 pm to 9 pm. This is a large Reggae Festival which draws crowds of up to 30,000, featuring many truly talented musicians. Food stands and more. This concert is held at Roy Wilkins Park which is at Baisley Blvd and Merrick Blvd in the South Jamaica section of Queens. For more info see www.iriejamboree.com.

Greenmarkets – These outdoor markets are sponsored by the City of New York Department of Parks and Recreation and the Council on the Environment of NYC. Their website is www.cenyc.org.

Sporting Activities
August 19 – 22nd – U.S. Open Qualifying Tournaments at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows Corona Park. Gates open at 10 am and it’s free. August 25 – September 7 – U.S. Open at Arthur Ashe Stadium in Flushing Meadows Corona Park. Times vary. Check your tickets. The U.S. Open website is www.usopen.org.
Outdoor Swimming - Outdoor pools in Queens are sponsored by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation. Entrance is free, but they have rules, the most notable of which is to bring a padlock for a locker as they have guidelines on what you can bring into the pool area. August 17 – Astoria. Ditmars Summerfest. On Ditmars Boulevard near 31st street. From 10 am – 7 pm.
August 30 – Sunnyside. Greenpoint Avenue Festival on Greenpoint Avenue between 44th Street and Queens Blvd from 11 am – 6 pm. Over 230 vendors.
