Astoria Leaf Fest 2010

Astoria Park Leaf Fest 2010

compost truck astoria leaf fest 2010 astoria parkContinued / December 3, 2010 / Astoria / Queens Buzz. This past Saturday, December 4th, about 30 volunteers bundled up against the cold in Astoria Park and collected an estimated three tons of tree leaves. Collecting leaves in the fall is important to NYC Parks and Public Works department because leaves can clog street drains and / or cause hazardous conditions on walk ways. Even though leaves are a valuable source of nutrition for the soil, in abundance, they can also prevent rainwater from gravitating to the roots of the trees and plants.

Through the Western Queens Compost Initiative, many of these leaves will be composted locally via use in community gardens and participating parks along the East River.   Composted leaves are used as mulch and natural fertilizer for city's trees, flowerbeds, lawns, and gardens. The NYC Parks Department will transfer the rest of the leaves to the compost project at Starrett City in Brooklyn by compactor trucks [see Jules Corkery photo above].

Leaf Fest 2010 was a collaboration by the Astoria Park Alliance with Green Shores NYC, Friends of Rainey Park, Friends of Queensbridge Park, NYC Community Clean Up, Western Queens Compost Initiative, and NYC Parks and Recreation.
