June 30, 2011 / Astoria Neighborhood / Parks & Sports / Queens Buzz. I just returned from the Astoria Park Fireworks display - easily one of the best fireworks displays you'll find in the country. The Astoria Park fireworks are done by the world famous Grucci Fireworks company, which is a family run business that has been in the fireworks business for over a century. While the highlight of the evening was the fireworks, it's worth mentioning that thousands sat comfortably on the Great Lawn of Astoria Park and were treated to an array of beautiful music performed by the Astoria Symphony.

June 30, 2011 / Astoria Neighborhood / Parks & Sports / Queens Buzz. Continued / Use the search function to find story introduction if needed. The night was near perfect. It was about 70 degrees outside, with a fresh cool dry breeze blowing into Astoria Park off the East River. This was quite a contrast to last year, when I thought the fellow next to me was having bowel troubles. Last year a nearby waste water treatment plant had poorly timed a stinky process and had subjected all of us to an additional sensory blast ... but I digress.
A Nation Of Immigrants Celebrates Its Birthday
As I looked out over the Great Lawn of Astoria Park I could see members from all parts of the community had come to enjoy a celebration of the nation's birthday. People, from the very young to the rather old, and numerous representatives from every continent on the planet - save Antarctica - were present in the crowd. Some wore their native robes, while most were dressed American style.
People were in a good mood which you can see by the photos. There were smiles galore, as people prepared to ease into the long 4th of July holiday weekend. The Astoria Symphony was playing a relaxing score of beautiful classical music, as the sun began to gently make its way behind the Manhattan skyline.
I felt a sense of peacefulness and world community tonight. All around me were immigrants, children of immigrants, grandchildren of immigrants, great grandchildren of immigrants and so on ... from all over the world, kicking back on a nice summer evening to enjoy a few hours of relaxation ... together. This is what life should be like.
4th Of July Fireworks In Queens
I noticed that folks seemed to be able to find one another pretty easily in Astoria Park. Many had their cell phones on, arranging to meet their families and friends along the East River, under the Hells Gate Bridge, at the top of the Great Lawn where a flag was flying, or down in front of the bandstand in the presence of a relaxed crowd of thousands.
Attendance was high this year, as it appears to have risen each of the past three years I've been covering the event. This seems natural since the Macy's July 4th NYC fireworks display moved to the other side of the Hudson in 2009 [click link to see story].
Fire Department Fireboat 343 Puts On A Water Show
The fire department water boat, Fireboat 343, also provided the crowd with a wet and wild water show along the East River. The boat had opened about ten or more different water spouts / hoses on the boat, and sent tens of thousands of gallons of water gushing through them to create a sort of floating fountain along the East River. This water art performance was staged on the East River, in front of the Great Lawn, between the RFK and Hellsgate Bridges.
The fireboat was named after the 343 men who lost their lives on 911. And if I got this right, I heard that it can spray about 50,000 gallons of water per minute. But don't quote me on that, because I'm not sure I heard it right.
Grucci Brothers Fireworks In Astoria Park Photos
The Grucci fireworks display was exceptional this year. They added a couple of new tricks into the program, including a low lying fleur-de-lis, and enhancements to the 3D fireworks they've shown in prior years. I enjoyed everything a bit more this year, possibly due to the fantastic weather.
