NY Mets Play Last Games At Shea Stadium

Shea Stadium in Flushing Queens NY / September 27th and 28th 2008. The Mets took on the Marlins in the last game of regular season play on Sunday, September 28th. They lost the game 2 - 4, which broke their horse race for the wild card berth in the National League Playoffs with the Milwaukee Brewers. This is how the Mets' fortunes ended at Shea Stadium.

MY Mets Play Marlins In Last Baseball Games Played At Shea Stadium

I went to watch the Mets play the Marlins Saturday, September 27th and, to my surprise noticed that there were a lot of empty seats in the stadium [see the empty orange seats in the photo]. So contrary to expectations, it may have been possible get tickets to this historic last game in Shea.

The Mets won the game I attended on Saturday, September 27th, beating the Marlins 2 - 0. But they lost the last game on Sunday, 2 - 4, which then eliminated their chances of going to the National League East playoffs. In the Saturday game, Mets pitcher Johan Santana became the fifth pitcher to win a shut out on only three days rest. See the slide show of a bit of this historic pitching feat which we've included in this article.

Citi Field / Shea Stadium History

Shea Stadium was built in 1964 and was demolished in February of 2009. The stadium is being replaced by Citi Field, which is already standing right next door. According to some of our sources, Citi Field apparently has some amenities that Shea didn't. Part of the reason being that Shea Stadium was built to be the home of both the New York Mets and the New York Jets. The Jets left the stadium for New Jersey in the eighties.
