Chinese New Year of the Pig in Queens

Year of the Pig Celebrated in Flushing Chinese New Year Parade

queens things to doFebruary 10, 2019 / Things To Do Queens / Queens Neighborhoods / Queens Buzz NYC. By Michael Wood.

On Saturday I made my way east to Flushing to watch the Chinese New Year Parade. It was a nice sunny day with temperatures in the 30's, and a fair wind blowing, adding to the chill. But that doesn't seem to dampen the enthusiasm of the large crowds that come to attend and witness one of the world's most ancient cultures on full theatrical display.

The sidewalks in Flushing along Main Street had been widened this past year, enabling a far better flow of pedestrian traffic than in prior years. I headed south toward the Flushing branch of the Queens Library, to find an opening into the street where I could - for the first time - take video of the colorful, musical parade.

I'll post the video later today.

Chinese New Year Parade in Flushing Queens: The Year of the Snake - 2013

This is a report about the Chinese New Year parade in Flushing Queens on February 8, 2013. In 2013 the Chinese New Year Parade started with great weather. It was sunny and seasonably warm, with the highs in the low forties. Due to the good weather and increasing awareness of the colorful cultural event, we estimate that the crowd in attendance was over 10,000 as spectators lined the entire length of the parade.

chinese new years parade photos queens nySpectators lined the streets two, three and four deep. There were large congregations of spectators, particularly from the stretch along Main Street from the Queens Library to the south to the new Queens Crossing Mall at the north end. Nonetheless, due to the wide Flushing streets and rerouted traffic, there was ample room in which to move around.

This year there were a number of new costumes and floats, and we recognized some costumes from the prior year as well. The better weather [last year the temperatures were in the single digits and there was a biting wind] and the larger crowds added to the theater of the parade as we were able to relax a bit more and take in the entire scene.

It was interesting to observe American Korean War veterans marching alongside Korean American floats. At first this struck me with a bit of irony, but as I pondered it more deeply, it occurred to me that the Koreans marching in the parade [or their parents and grandparents] likely fought alongside these Veterans of the 1950's conflict.

photos chinese new year parade flushingThere were also representatives of the U.S. Census, reminding citizens to be sure to register this year as the census is used to determine the public allocation to neighborhoods, of funds for educational and social services. The Chinese American community in Flushing has begun to rival Chinatown in Manhattan as the largest concentration of Chinese in the western hemisphere. In the last census the Flushing population was estimated to be in the range of 200,000, of which about a third were Chinese. Manhattan's Chinatown is estimated to have a Chinese population ranging from a low of 70,000 to a high of 150,000. So it will be interesting to see the results of the 2010 census.

Chinese New Year Parade 2016

chinese new year parade flushing photos Parade Route Map & Times

February 10, 2016 / Flushing / Ethnic & Religious Culture / Queens Buzz. The year of the monkey [it was the year of the dragon in 2015, horse in 2014, the snake in 2013 and the dragon in 2012] is being celebrated in the Chinese New Year Parade in Flushing on Saturday, February 13th.

It’s easily the one of the best Queens parades because the Chinese and Koreans put a lot of effort into a sensory pleasing, cultural mélange, that includes beautiful costumes, melodic music and aesthetic theater.

Thousands participate in the parade, which first began in Flushing in 1997. In 2011 the parade starting welcoming non-Asian participation, and hence last year it was interesting to watch someone of mixed ethnic descent, run as one the leads of one of the dragon dance teams. The dragon dance teams in the Flushing New Year Parade vary, as in China, from a two member team to as many as ten or fifteen. Legend has it, that the longer the parade dragon, the greater the luck for the year.

Continued. February 10, 2016 / Flushing / Ethnic & Religious Culture / Queens Buzz. With agreeable weather, you can expect over ten thousand people in attendance at the parade, but given the cold weather the size of the crowd is hard to anticipate, but it will easily be in the thousands.

Year of the Horse - Queens Chinese New Year

Each year of the Chinese calendar is represented by a symbol or character. This year - 2016 - celebrates the year of the Monkey.

This year is the year of the Monkey and year #4714. The year 2012 [4709] was the year of the dragon, while 2013 [4710] is the year of the Snake. The Snake is said to be a good provider and cunning in business. The symbols of the Chinese calendar are on a twelve year cycle, thus recurring every 12th year.

The Chinese new year symbols have parallels in the western zodiac. The snake has been matched to the zodiac Taurus. And it's worth noting that in each rotation one of the five basic elements - wood, metal, fire, water and earth - plays a key role. These Chinese elements also have parallels to the western zodiac. See the link below on Chinese New Year culture in 2012 for more Chinese cultural background.

Chinese New Year Parade Route - Flushing Queens. The Chinese New Year Parade route begins at the corner of Queens Crossing Mall and the Parking Lot along 39th Avenue just off Main Street. And there will still be plenty of room along Union Street and Sanford Avenue.

Chinese New Year Parade In Flushing Queens: The Year of the Tiger - 2010 (also includes 2009)

Chinese New Year Parade FlushingFlushing Queens / February 1, 2010.

This is the year of the Tiger. And on Saturday, February 20th, the Chinese Businessmen's Association will host the famous and fabulous Chinese New Year Parade 2010 in the Flushing neighborhood of Queens.

Chinese New Year Parade Logistics

The Chinese New Year Parade in Queens celebrates the year of the tiger. The Chinese New Year Parade begins at 11 am on Saturday in Flushing. This year [2010] the Chinese New Year Parade will start at 37th Avenue and Union Street. The parade will snake south on Union, turns west on Sanford Avenue and then head south again along Main Street - all in Flushing neighborhood of Queens.

Chinese New Year ParadeFlushing Parade Is One Of Best Chinese New Year Parades Outside Of China

This is purely based on conjecture, but based on what I saw last year, I have to believe that this is one of the best Chinese New Year Parades outside of China. It's also one of the three best parades in Queens that I've witnessed [Columbus Day in Astoria in October and St Patricks Day in Sunnyside / Woodside - coming Sunday March 7th - see Members Calendar for details].

I recommend viewing this parade at least once in your life as the Asian pageantry is unparalleled.

Chinese New Year Parade QueensYear Of The Tiger - Celebrations In Flushing After Chinese New Year Parade

The Chinese New Year Parade in Flushing will be followed by a fireworks display in the street adjacent to Queens Crossing [about 12.30 or 1 pm]. Following the fireworks display, there will be a number of Asian cultural performances on the second floor of the Queens Crossing Mall.

About 2,000 people are expected to participate and many more to attend. We will post more about this upcoming event, including photos from last year, on Monday.

III. Chinese New Year Parade Flushing Queens: Year of the Ox - 2009

Chinese New Year in Flushing Queens NYFlushing / January 31, 2009.

We had the opportunity to photograph the pageantry of the Flushing Chinese / Korean New Years Parade in Flushing. This year marks the year of the Ox, about which we will tell you more later in this story. The Chinese American and Korean American groups collaborated in putting together this rich, colorful and ancient parade. We snapped up many photos and have put together a photo gallery for you to peruse. Click here to read the rest of the story about the Chinese New Year in Flushing and to view the photo gallery of the parade.

The Chinese in Queens celebrated the new year with a huge parade on Saturday in Flushing. This is the year of the Ox, the second year in the 12 year cycle of the calendar. The parade was a beautiful pageant of many cultural icons, including many peopled dragons, American-style floats, numerous bands playing music and Chinese New Yearof course ... the ox.

There are 12 animals in all that make up the Chinese calendrical cycle and zodiac: the rat [2008], the ox [2009], the tiger [2010], the rabbit [2011], the dragon [2012], the snake [2013], the horse [2014], the sheep [2015], the monkey [2016], the rooster, the dog and the pig and they go in that order, repeating continuously.
