Things To Do In Queens Over The Presidents Day Weekend

NYC Weather. The temperature highs Friday, Saturday and Sunday will range from the high 40's to the low 50's, before rising on Monday into the high 50's. The temperature lows will fall to 30 on Friday, rising to 35 on Saturday, to 45 on Sunday, before descending into the high 30's on Monday. No precipitation is forecast. It's going to be a fairly windy weekend, with the winds at 20 mph Friday, falling to 5 - 10 mph on Saturday and Sunday, and then rising again to about 10 mph on Monday. The humidity will be 50% - 60% on Friday, falling to 40% - 50% on Saturday, rising to 50% - 70% on Sunday, before falling back to about 50% on Monday. Click for Queens Weather.
The photo at right was taken at Four Freedoms Park on Roosevelt Island which commemorates Franklin Delano Roosevelt's 1941 speech declarating the inalienable rights of all people. The four freedoms are 1) Freedom of Speech, 2) Freedom of Worship, 3) Freedom of Want and 4) Freedom of Fear.
Presidents Day is a federal holiday when all local, state and federal government offices are closed, which generally includes public schools - unless the district uses the holiday to make up a snow day, which is highly unlikely this year since there hasn't been any measureable snow.
Presidents Day is a time to reflect on the performance of our current presidents and legislators, to see how they stack up versus their historical peers. And in that reflection it's worth asking ourselves what we've done to contribute or detract from the national conversation.
Brief History of Presidents Day Holiday in NYC
A day commemorating Lincoln's birthday was first passed in Buffalo, New York in the early 1870's. Presidents Day originated as Washington's Birthday which was a holiday narrowly prescribed for federal government offices in Washington, D.C. in 1879. The holiday was dedicated to honoring the memory of the first American president, George Washington who was born on February 22, 1732.
In 1885 the holiday was expanded to include all federal government offices around the nation. In 1951 there was a push to create a Presidents Day holiday [vs a George Washington's birthday holiday] to include President Lincoln whose birthday is February 12, 1809 and was also celebrated by localities, but it didn't pass.
In 1971 the holiday was moved off of George Washington's birth date to being the third Monday in February. Thus while it never falls upon Washington's birthday 2/22, the official name of the holiday remains Washington's Birthday. But today, most folks refer to it as Presidents Day and to recognize the presidents who honored the U.S. Constitution and served the interests of the people.

Historical Societies In Queens - Presidents Day Weekend Events
Queens has a number of historical societies, most of which are affiliated with one of the historical sites in Queens. Most of these historical societies have exhibits, programs and films that run through the year.
The Queens Historical Society is located in the Kingsland Homestead, an early American home [built 1785] in Flushing. The location is 143-35 37th Avenue at Bowne Street in Flushing. The Queens Historical Society is open for limited capacity visits under CoVid safety guidelines. They also offer some online programming. Rsvp a timed ticket for an in-person visit at www.queenshistoricalsociety.org.
THIS NEEDS UPDATING FOR 2023. The Bayside Historical Society is located at 208 Totten Avenue inside of Fort Totten, an old historic fort overlooking the area where the East River meets the Long Island Sound in northern Bayside. The Bayside Historical Society remains temporarily closed, pending the diminishing of the CoVid pandemic. But during the month of February they are hosting The 21st Annual Winter Art Show at the Bay Terrace Shopping Center and it's online too. For details see - www.baysidehistorical.org/
The Ridgewood Historical Society is located in the Onderdonk House at 1820 Flushing Avenue between Onderdonk Avenue and Cypress Avenue. It's a Dutch settler's home dating back hundreds of years. The Ridgewood Historical Society is located in the Onderdonk House which is open Saturdays and Sundays for visits and tours from 12 noon - 5 pm. Rsvp as it has limited capacity. The King Manor Museum is located in King Park in Jamaica, which is located along Jamaica Avenue between 150th and 153rd Streets. The home was once a large farm owned by Rufus King, one of the signers of the U.S. Constitution. The King Manor Museum is open for in person visits Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 11 am - 4 pm, but the last hourly tour on weekdays begins at 3 pm. THIS NEEDS UPDATING FOR 2023. And the Astoria Historical Society which was located in the Quinn Building on Broadway in Astoria moved to 44-02 23rd Street in Long Island City. While the Astoria Historical Society doesn't appear to be open daily, it is open for in-person events, such as a Wednesday, February 23rd event by a Forgotten NY guest who delves into the history of African Americans in the Weeksville neighborhood of Brooklyn. Historical Sites In Queens - Presidents Day Weekend Events
Queens also has a number of interesting historic sites located within an approximately 10 square block area in historic Flushing, many of which date back to colonial times. In addition to those mentioned above, the following are part of the annual Flushing Historic House Tour.
THIS NEEDS UPDATING FOR 2023. The Flushing Town Hall has been transformed into a cultural center. This weekend [2.19 - 20.2022] they are hosting some two musical performances - Intuition: Songs from the Minds of Women on Saturday at 8 pm [$15 / $12] and Sunday at 7 pm the Black King of Vaudeville - Remembering Bert Williams in Song [[$15 / $12]. The Quaker Meeting House is located on Northern Blvd in Flushing, not far from Flushing Town Hall. It was one of the early Quaker places of worship in the New World. They do continue to host third party in-person events, and while they haven't yet resumed regular tours, you may contact them to arrange a visit. For details see - www.flushingfriends.org
The Bowne House, not far from the Kingsland Homestead, was the colonial home of John Bowne who pleaded for religious freedom to the Dutch East Indies Company back in the 1600's. They have resumed regular tours, but rsvps and compliance with CoVid protocols continue. For details see - www.bownehouse.org
Some of the newer sites include the Voelker Orth House, which is a well preserved Victorian Home located in Flushing. They appear to be receiving in person tours on Sundays and Tuesdays from 1 - 4 pm but NOT PRESIDENTS DAY WEEKEND. For details see - www.vomuseum.org
The Louis Latimer House, where the famed African American inventor, who worked for Thomas Edison, once lived. The Louis Latimer House is open Fridays and Saturdays from 11 am - 5 pm. They do periodically offer online programming / events such as a recent one for Black History Month. For details see - www.lewislatimerhouse.org
And the Louis Armstrong House, where the famous jazz musician lived. The Louis Armstrong House is open Thursdays through Saturdays from 11 am - 4 pm, with tours beginning every hour on the hour, with the last tour at 3 pm. They offer some online programming. Art Exhibits In Queens - Presidents Day Weekend Things To Do

The PS1 MoMA Museum located at 22-25 Jackson Avenue at 46th Avenue in Long Island City is open throughout the weekend and oftentimes hosts a number of different art / music performances. They're open from Thursday through Mondays from 12 noon - 6 pm. For details see - www.moma.org/ps1
There's also the Noguchi Museum of sculpture which is located at 9-01 33rd Road at Vernon Blvd along the northern LIC / Astoria neighborhood border. They're open Wednesday through Sunday from 11 am - 6 pm and closed Mondays and Tuesdays. Currently on exhibit is 'Useless Architecture'. They do offer some visual exhibits online. The Sculpture Center is located at 44-19 Purves Street off Jackson Avenue, only a few blocks from MoMA PS1 in LIC. They are open Thursday through Monday from 12 noon - 6 pm. For details see - www.sculpture-center.org
And in Flushing there's the Queens Museum in Flushing Meadows Corona Park which has an array of artistic, cultural and historic exhibits and programs and films. The Queens Museum is open weekdays from 12 noon - 5 pm, and on Saturdays and Sundays it's opens from 11 am - 5 pm. It's closed Monday & Tuesday. For details see - www.queensmuseum.org. They have a couple of special events over the weekend, which are posted on the front page.

Theater In Queens - Presidents Day Weekend Things To Do
Queens has an array of theater venues for the performing arts, many of which historically have hosted performances over the Presidents Day Weekend. We're normalizing, so check back on the Friday of that weekend for an update.
The photo at right shows a theatrical performance at the LaGuardia Performing Arts Center in LIC.
Some of the more notable performing arts venues in Queens include the LaGuardia Performing Arts Center at 31-10 Thomson Avenue between Van Dam and 31st Street in Long Island City. The 2022 - 2023 season is well underway. For details and tickets see - www.lpac.nyc.
The Chocolate Factory is located at 5-49 49th Avenue off Vernon Blvd in Long Island City. The 2023 season begins February 9, 2023. For details and tickets see - www.chocolatefactorytheater.org
The Secret Theater is located at 44-02 23rd Street between 44th Avenue and 44th Road in Long Island City. Sadly, the Secret Theater was a casualty of the CoVid pandemic.
There's also Queens Theater [in the park], is located in Flushing Meadows Corona Park. The theater is doing a mix of in-person shows, in-person workshops and online theater, dance & music. For details see - www.queenstheatre.org
The Flushing Town Hall was been transformed into a cultural center many years ago. This weekend they are hosting some musical performances. For details and tickets see - www.flushingtownhall.org
And the Jamaica Center for Arts & Learning at 161-40 Jamaica Avenue and the Jamaica Performing Arts Center at 153-10 along Jamaica Avenue are both centers of cultural activities - including art, dance, theater and music. The Jamaica Center for Arts & Learning is doing a blend of online events and in-person programming. Their new hours at weekdays 10 am - 6 pm and Saturday from 12 noon - 3 pm. And, while not a performing arts venue, the Museum of the Moving Image, or MoMI as it is called, is located at 35th Street and 35th Avenue in Astoria / LIC is worth a considerable mention. They have film screenings, film and related exhibits throughout the year and there are also oftentimes thematic programs related to issues, culture, people and events of today and of yesteryears. The museum is open Thursday from 2 - 6 pm, Friday from 2 - 8 pm, and Saturdays and Sundays they are open from 12 noon - 6 pm [as well as during winter break from February 20 - 24, 2023]. The York College Bassin Performing Arts Center is located at 94-45 Guy Brewer Blvd between Archer and Liberty Avenues on the York College campus in Jamaica. The Bassin Performing Arts Center is a venue for musical, dance and cultural performances. No events are planned at the Bassin Performing Arts Center over the Presidents Day Weekend and - according to their events calendar - into the forseeable future.
And there's the Queens College Kupferberg Center located at 65-30 Kissena Blvd off Harding Expressway on the Queens College campus. The Kupferberg Center is a venue for musical, dance and cultural performances. For details see - http://kupferbergcenter.org/
