Athens Park - Peaceful Respite In Astoria
Astoria NY / November 2008. Athens Square Park was dedicated as such to salute the Greeks in the Astoria community. Statues of Athena and Socrates, as well as a set of Ionic columns adorn the park [see photo].
The statue of Athena was donated by the mayor of Athens to the people of New York late in 1998 and in 2004 the Olympic torch was here. As you can see in the photo, the park is used as a recreational and relaxation space for the neighborhood, but occasionally it is also used as a gathering place for community activist efforts, such as in the fall of 2008 when a group staged an anti-hate rally and march.
