Queens Bridge Events - Centennial Celebration
Queens / June 1, 2009. On June 6th Queens celebrates the 100th anniversary of the opening of the Queensboro Bridge, which was completed one hundred years ago in March of 1909. The Queensboro Bridge Centennial, true to Queens intrinsic nature, is being celebrated in a number of different ways including walks, cake, bike rides, historic talks, performance and music.
Queens Bridge Centennial Celebration – June 6th
First the centennial celebration falls right in the middle of the Queens Arts Festival entitled Queens Art Express which has been put on by the Queens Council On The Arts. You may click this link to view the events of the Queens Art Express Festival, the last two weeks of which have been detailed in their entirety separately. For purposes of this story we will focus on the other events scheduled to coincide with the Queensboro Bridge centennial celebration.
Queensboro Bridge 100th Anniversary Events - Free
Historic Walking Tour On Queensboro Bridge at 10 AM
The Greater Astoria Historical Society is sponsoring an historic bridge walking that starts at 10 am and ends prior to noon. The tour begins on the east corner of Crescent Street and Queens Plaza North in Long Island City. The walk and talk will begin along the north outer roadway [for pedestrians and cyclists] of the Queensboro Bridge. The talk will end in Manhattan at 60th Street and 2nd Avenue [there's a subway station nearby at 59th and Lexington].
Bike Registration / Preparation for LIC Bike Parade at Socrates Sculpture Park at 11 AM
Lessons, registration, safety checks and decorations for the bike parade begin at the Socrates Sculpture Park at 11 am and go until the parade begins at 2 pm [read below].
Second Annual LIC Bike Parade [and more] starts at Socrates Sculpture Park at 2 PM
The Bike Parade registration, safety checks and decorations begins at Socrates Sculpture Park at 11 AM [see above entry]. The parade itself begins at 2 pm which will include the Sunnyside Drum Corp.
Sing Happy Birthday To The Queensboro Bridge at Queens Bridge Park at 3.30 pm
This event includes birthday cake and will be followed by a brief history of the bridge at 4 pm. It's worth noting that this is the closest public park that lies just under / adjacent to the bridge and will have events going from 1 - 6 pm, including music by DJ's.
Building Bridges at LaGuardia Performing Arts Center at 2 PM
At 2 pm the LaGuardia Performing Arts Center will host a program called 'Building Bridges'.
Multiformity at Green Space at 4 PM
Green Space is a well known dance studio located in the area and will be performing a mosaic dance piece encompassing the styles of many cultures [$15].
100 Degrees Art Piece by DOT at 33rd Street and Queens Blvd at 6 pm
This event is slated to be held at 33rd Street and Queens Blvd, underneath the subway stop where it will be installed.
