No Fireworks In Queens - July 4 2009

Macy’s 4th Of July Fireworks Moves To Hudson

Queens Fireworks Is Monday Night, June 29th at Astoria Park

QueensBuzz.com / Queens / June 28, 2009. Queens won’t have any public fireworks displays on Saturday, July 4th because the fireworks display won’t be lit from the East River like it has since I can remember.

The Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks display will be shot from six barges along the Hudson River between 24th and 50th Streets. What was the reason for moving the fireworks display from the East River to the Hudson? To celebrate the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson’s exploration of the river named after him.

Start Your Own Queens Fireworks This 4th Of July - Call 311

Ok, I don’t know what your reaction is, but personally I didn’t appreciate the fact that the 4.5 million New Yorkers who live in Queens and Brooklyn were basically ignored when whomever at Macy’s and in the NYC government made this decision. Moving the event to the Hudson may be good for the economies of Manhattan and New Jersey, but it’s not good for Queens’ or Brooklyn’s. If you have a couple of minutes and feel like I do, start a little fireworks of your own and call 311 to register your interest in keeping the fireworks display in the East River. Email a link to this story [see bottom of page] and ask your friends to do so too. If we don’t call city government officials out on these sorts of sleights, we will continue to be ignored – not just for public celebrations, but for far more meaningful issues as well. That’s 311. Queens Fireworks 2009 Queens Fireworks July 4thIndependence Day Fireworks In Astoria Park On June 29th

On Monday, June 29, 2009, today, there’s an Independence Day Fireworks celebration which will start between 8.30 and 9.30 pm in Astoria Park. It will be preceded by the big band sounds of Joe Bataglia & The New York Big Band starting at 7.30 pm. While it will be cloudy Monday morning, it is expected to dry up by midday and stay dry for the rest of the day. Temperatures Monday night will be in the low to mid seventies [see weather link on left sidebar for details] so it should be a perfectly comfortable June night out. And possibly not so crowded given the clouds. Click here to view a map of Astoria Park in Astoria Queens NY.

Queens Fireworks July 4th - Not / Other Things To Do

So on July 4th, if the Astoria Parks Fireworks didn’t fit into your schedule or satisfy your yearning to celebrate Independence Day, you have a couple of options.

#1. New York City July 4th Fireworks From Queens

You could pack off to the west side of Manhattan amidst what’s likely to be a huge crowd to watch the fireworks from the west side of Manhattan. We understand the fireworks will begin between 8 and 8.30 pm. Sunset is at 8.30 pm, and it’s still light out, so our experience has been that they generally start a bit late [but don’t blame us if you’re not there on time].

Public Transit From Queens To NYC For July 4th Fireworks Display

There’s no sense driving into the city, so you’d have to take the #7, E, F, G, R or V lines into some stop along the west side, including Times Square which is bound to be a zoo. And the subway lines are bound to be packed. So knock yourself out and travel to the land of the $10 Coke and the $20 Hamburger or …

#2. Jones Beach 4th of July Fireworks On Long Island

You have a second fireworks display option which is to travel to the beautiful shores of Jones Beach and watch a public fireworks display there. For anyone who lives in eastern Queens the travel time is equal to, or possibly less the time to go into Manhattan via public transit.

Based on what I understand, the Jones Beach Fireworks Display begins at 9.30 pm, but given the NYC one is slated at 8.30 pm and sunset is at 8.30 pm, that seems a bit late. But that’s the info we have, so we’re going with it.

Public Transit From Queens To Jones Beach

The LIRR leaves from the Jamaica Station every half hour beginning at 5.05 pm and arrives in Freeport 21 minutes later at 5.26 pm [5.35 / 6.05 etc]. From there you take the N88 Long Island Bus. The off peak one way train fares are $5.25 at the ticket office and less via the web and more buying onboard. I believe a round trip package is available for $13.50 per person, so ask for it. Jones Beach is a nice quick getaway from the city and based on hearsay from last year, not so very crowded. But as you know, given no East River fireworks, that could change too.

#3. Things To Do On July 4th 2009 In Queens

Check our Queens Events section for a listing of things to do on the Fourth of July later this week. There are art shows, including the beginning of the PS1 Warm Up Party on July 4th which is another reason to stay in Queens this weekend, as well as all kinds of other local happenings which will be posted in our Queens Events section by Wednesday.

Happy July 4th Queens – Happy Independence Day
