Save the Stache Astoria
QSAC Fundraiser Hosted at the Redken Saloon Hair Salon in Astoria
January 22, 2018 / Astoria Neighborhood / Queens Community Issues / Queens Buzz NYC.
A week ago I headed over to the Redken Saloon Salon in Astoria for the 7th annual Save the Stache fundraiser. I had attended the event last year, watching quite a number of local celebrities for a day, shave their beards and mustaches in order to raise funds for QSAC which is the acronym for Quality Services for the Autism Community.
Quality Services for the Autism Community [aka QSAC] has programs designed to help families enable their children to do more for themselves as well as the community. QSAC offers emergency fund assistance for unexpected crises as well as reimbursement options for some of the things not covered by other government / private / social programs. The organization also provides respite services in the home as well as overnight stays away from home, to provide a bit of a break to the caregivers. And QSAC helps families find and coordinate services to help children with autism, as well as providing offsite “home environments that foster independence, community integration, individualization and productivity”.

Save the Stache Astoria
QSAC Fundraiser Hosted at the Redken Saloon Hair Salon in Astoria

The Kiwanis, Astoria Realtor Paul Halvatzis & Frank Arcabascio of the Redken Saloon Hair Salon Astoria Team up on QSAC Fundraiser
This particular fundraising event was founded by Astoria realtor Paul Halvatzis, whose family has been in the Astoria real estate business for about a half century. A few years back Paul approached the local Kiwanis Club to solicit their support for the service agency and the Kiwanis members have been growing and shaving their facial hair for charity ever since.
The event has been held at the Redken Saloon Salon since its inception, as the owner, Frank Arcabascio, and members of his staff, take a hands on approach to removing the men's whiskers. But the hair removal is not done without a bit of style and flair, as the men's hairy faces are first transformed into a kaliedoscope of color, in a fashion not unlike the Indian holiday Holi, before the razors and clippers complete their work.
There's food and wine there too, catered by one or more of the local restaurants [names?]. I didn't get a chance to sample it, but I understand it was greatly appreciated through a combination of hearsay and noticing some of the empty platters at the end of the night.
It was a lot of fun, among many friends in the Astoria community and beyond, with live interactive entertainment, food and wine, and for a good cause ... not a bad way to start the new year.
I hope you have a good one. If you're interested in participating in the event next year contact QSAC directly, or Paul Halvatzis at Amorelli Realty in Astoria, or Frank Arcabascio at the Redken Saloon Salon.
