I just returned from the first annual Taste Of Sunnyside and I'm still digesting the after glow. It began tonite at 6.30 pm at the Master Billiards & Cafe on Queens Blvd near 39th Street [see Dining & Drinking section of Queens Events for event notice].
There were between 15 and 20 Sunnyside restaurants that participated in the event, and about five beverage vendors. We estimate that the crowd was between 500 and 1,000 people and hope to report the final numbers when we receive them. Click here to read about and view Taste Of Sunnyside photos and slide show.
A Taste Of Sunnyside: Fun & Delicious
Continued / October 19, 2010 / Sunnyside Neighborhood / Sunnyside Restaurants / Queens Restaurants / Queens Buzz.. A Taste Of Sunnyside turned out to be a festive feast. People from Sunnyside and surrounding neighborhoods came out enmasse to make the event an enjoyable food festival and community event. Several members of the crowd commented that as they were making their way here, they weren't sure whether to expect a small gathering, or a large crowd. As fate would have it, it turned out to be a very large gathering.
A Taste Of Sunnyside Photos & Restaurants
Sunnyside restaurateurs did a nice job of pleasing the crowd as you can see from the photos. There was a wide selection of foods, ranging from Thai, Mexican, Italian and Irish; to modern, eclectic and even a bit of fast food. On the beverage side there were two vendors serving wines and a couple of other beverage vendors as well.
The following slide show contains photos of the event, with a very brief description located along the bottom left of the slide show projector. Click here to go directly to view the Taste Of Sunnyside photos.

A Taste Of Sunnyside - Sunnyside Shines
The Sunnyside Shines BID started working on Taste Of Sunnyside early this year. They modeled the event based on a similar event done in another neighborhood in Queens. James Bray, Director of Sunnyside Shines, was the point person and several people interviewed were quick to note his hard work and contributions. According to John Vogt, Chairman of the Sunnyside Shines BID and a Sunnyside Chamber of Commerce member, the Sunnyside Chamber Of Commerce was also quite helpful in supporting the event. Ira Greenberg, Sunnyside Chamber Of Commerce president, noted that it was a collaborative effort.
Helping Local Restaurateurs - A Taste Of Sunnyside
The event was intended to help promote Sunnyside restaurants within the neighborhood and surrounding area. The restaurateurs donated the food and paid $200 per table, while attendees were charged $20 to eat and drink for the evening. There were expenses, including publicity, renting the location and so forth. And we were informed that the proceeds from the event will used for future Sunnyside business improvement efforts. Sunnyside Shines is a non-profit organization dedicated to serving the businesses along Queens Blvd and Greenpoint Avenue.
A Taste Of Sunnyside 2011?
Given the success of the event this year, James Bray stated that there would likely be one next year. He also commented that it was too early to provide any details. Also attending the event were: State Assemblywoman Cathy Nolan, City Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer and Community Board member Joseph Conley.
