Astoria Park Summer 2009 - Concerts & Movies
The Central Astoria Local Development Corporation sponsored Joe Battaglia and the New York Big Band to play for the audience starting at 7.30 pm preceding the display. This is the first concert of the summer for the park. The entire lawn was filled with over a thousand residents from around the neighborhood but also from other sections of Queens. Along the waterfront more than a thousand more people lined the walk along the East River in anticipation of the big event. This fireworks event has been going on at least nine years and the Independence Day concert in the park has been going on for 27 years [since 1982]. Movies are also shown in Astoria Park during the summer and they are also sponsored by CALDC a link to which is provided below.
Astoria Park - Beautiful East River Views
It was a beautiful clear night, about seventy degrees and dry. I mingled with some of the attendees, some of whom had come from other sections of Queens as well as some who’d been coming to Astoria Park for many decades and had seen the park fall into decay in the seventies and eighties when it had become a hang out for druggies. They have also witnessed Astoria Park's resurgence since the eighties to this day. The park is now well policed and kept clean by active community members and groups.
Astoria Park - Swimming Pool
Astoria Park has a long history, which you can find on the New York Parks Department website. Among other things Astoria park is home to an Olympic sized pool which is kept clean and seems to get only moderate use, so there's generally ample room to relax and swim. To use the pool you must have a proper swimming suit, a padlock for your locker, it helps to have a towel to dry off and they recommend you don't bring valuables as you are responsible for them if lost.
Astoria Park Activities - Bike Riding, Sports & More
Astoria park also has a beautiful road that runs along the East River which can be used for biking or strolling and in August this will be one of the streets that gets closed to auto traffic one day for several weekends in a row [see events / parks]. Adjacent to this road are sweeping lawns which creep up the hill to the street and they make perfect sunbathing spots during the summer as they overlook the East River and for which there are many trees under which to find shelter once you've received enough sun. Many couples and families picnic here although barbequing is not allowed. And lastly there are basketball courts for those with a bit more energy than most during the languid months.
