August Queens Events - Things To Do
August - End Of Summer
August is the last summer month. It's a time to enjoy being out in the sun and daylight after work and watching free movies in the parks. And then late in the month, for some, preparing to return to school.
Last Summer Weekend
August 27, 2009. Hard to believe, but it's already here, the last weekend of August and in a sense, the summer of 2009. Seems only fitting that rain is forecast for Friday, Saturday and scattered T-storms on Sunday.
Shakespeare's 'As You Like It' is playing at the Secret Theatre in LIC Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 8 pm [$15]. On Saturday and Sunday at the Socrates Sculpture Park in Astoria from 2 pm - 6 pm rain or shine there's 'Float' a biennial series of performances and temporary sculptures.
On Saturday at the Queens Museum of Art in Flushing from 1 pm to 4 pm the Asian Film Series is showing two movies from Central Asia, and from 7 pm to 10 pm they're hosting their fourth annual Ramadan Iftar with a movie about hope, strenght and resilience [$5 donation admission]. Also on Saturday at Waltz-Astoria in Astoria beginning at 9 pm Jon Christopher is performing.
On Sunday at Socrates Sculpture Park from 2 pm to 5 pm they're presenting 'Float' which is a series of performances and temporary sculpture. At Flushing Town Hall in Flushing beginning at 2 pm they've invited artists of all disciplines to bring in slides and CD's of their work to present [free]. Also on Sunday from 2 pm to 9 pm there's the Brooklyn - Queens Music Summit at the LIC Bar in Long Island City. Weather permitting it will be hosted in the courtyard as shown in the photo above from last Monday evening. Lastly, location maps may be found by using the search function in the upper left corner of this page. Enjoy.
Queens Hot Summer Days
'Cool' Weekend - Jazz Dance Theatre
Queens / August 20, 2009. One would expect things to wind down as the summer nears its end. But no, not in Queens. This weekend there are plenty of fun choices of things to do. Be advised that it's going to cool down to the mid to low eighties this weekend, and according to weather forecasts on Friday and Saturday there's a 60% chance of thunder showers, but only 30% chance on Sunday. This seems par for the course this summer.
On Friday night Topaz Arts in collaboration with the Queens Museum of Art bring you Malini Srinivasan who will dance at 6 pm at the Queens Museum of Art prior to the start of their summer film [free]. Hip To Hip's Shakespeare In The Park [Romeo & Juliet] comes to Sunnyside Gardens Park at 7 pm this Friday, Socrates Sculpture Park at 5 pm on Saturday and also at 5 pm at Forest Park on Sunday [all free]. There are some quite good jazz performances this weekend, starting with the final Hot Jazz Cool Garden concert, by Tin Pan Blues Band, at the Louis Armstrong House in Corona from 1 to 4 pm on Saturday [free]. On Saturday evening at Waltz-Astoria starting at 8 pm there's the Nue Jazz Project [$5 donation] and on Sunday at Flushing Town Hall beginning at 2 pm Willie Martinez brings you the Latin sounds of mambo in the courtyard [dress to sit on the ground - free].
And lastly, but not leastly, this weekend is another summer streets weekend in Sunnyside and Astoria Park, as well as the last summer performance at Travers Park in Jackson Heights. There will be ping pong and a water walk in Astoria Park on Sunday from 11 am - 4 pm and storytelling for children in Sunnyside on Saturday [Sunnyside has been re-scheduled due to rain]. In Jackson Heights there's an African Dance Workshop starting at 10.15 am and a theatrical performance entitled Tally Ho starting at 2 pm - both on Sunday. Use the search function in the upper left corner of the screen to find maps [to find the Astoria Park map you need to insert quotation marks and to find the Sunnyside Summer Streets map type in Sunnyside Shines].
Shakespeare In The Park All Weekend
Decomposition / We Are Not For Sale Film

On Friday beginning at beginning at 7 pm at the LaGuardia Performing Arts Center in Long Island City, the Internationalists perform Decomposition, a modern play about friendship and ambition during which the actors interact with the audience. The performance will be followed by a celebration of food, drink and live music all of which is included in the $20 admission. Click here to go to the members event calendar which has more on this film as well as the following events.
On Sunday, August 16 at 1 pm Topaz Arts in Woodside hosts a reading by Nancy Agabian which at 4 pm is followed by the opening reception of Greg Stowell's photographic exhibit entitled 'The Divide'. Both of these events are expected to be quite good. This Weekend Jazz Film Dance Street Life
Sunnyside / August 6, 2009. This weekend there's plenty afoot. All over Queens there are street festivals, for which we'll provide information later today or early tomorrow. On Friday starting at 7 pm Queens Museum of Art continues with its passport series of outdoor dance and a movie. This week it's about Port au Prince in the Caribbean. On Saturday from 4 to 7 pm there's a jazz concert on 46th and Queens Blvd underneath the Sunnyside Arch. On Sunday Queens residents take back the streets along the East River in Astoria Park. There will be kayaking and walking tours and fitness classes while a DJ plays music in the background.
Taking Back The Streets
Queens NY / August 4, 2009. We took a short vacation this past weekend, which was much needed, so we're a bit behind this month. This report is a quick heads up about the next three weekends, during which time a number of streets throughout various sections of Queens will be closed to traffic and made pedestrian only. A number of community groups have scheduled events / fairs / entertainment to give us staycation types a chance to relax a bit in our own environs. We'll have more on this once I get settled back in, but in the meantime stay cool. This photo was taken in Astoria Park which is the home to a beautiful public Olympic sized pool. Swim free.
