Queens - The Intrepid
MTA Disruptions / Bitter Cold Taken In Stride
January 31, 2010 / Astoria & Jackson Heights. The high on Saturday was 19 degrees, but temperatures were in the single digits when factoring in the wind chill. The MTA discontinued service on the number 7 line between Queensboro Plaza and NYC, and I experienced significant delays on the N train going to Astoria [over 30 minutes to ride from Queensboro Plaza to Ditmars], likely due to the running of additional Q trains which seemed to get tied up at the end of the subway line spur.
Nonetheless, the intrepid Queens residents and workers went about their business, undaunted by the manmade and natural obstacles that befell them. We saw large numbers of residents out on Saturday along Ditmars Street in Astoria going about their business, and at nightfall saw the streets of Jackson Heights bustling with foot traffic. The photo shows a moment during my subway trip between the two locations, at Queensboro Plaza at 5 pm as we awaited the number 7 train.
Later this week we'll be adding two new restaurant reviews - an Irish Pub in Woodside and an Italian restaurant in Jackson Heights. Failte and Arriverderci.
