Long Island City Artists Open Studios In Long Island City
May 22 - 23: LICA Open Studios
From 1 - 6 pm on Saturday and Sunday. This weekend LIC Artists will have a multitude of art on exhibit. The event is dispersed throughout the neighborhood, so it's a bit like a scavenger hunt to find, but there are also three main exhibit locations: 1) the Clocktower Building 29-27 Queens Plaza North - ground floor, 2) Holiday Inn Manhattan View 39-05 29th Street, and 3) Space Realty Group 29-09 39th Avenue [near Holiday Inn]. Noguchi Museum In Long Island City
May 9: Second Sundays - Sculptor Discusses Noguchi Influence
At 3 pm on the Second Sunday of every month the Noguchi Museum hosts music or a discussion in either the garden or the lower level meeting room. In May, Peter Randall-Page will discuss his three decades of work as a sculptor. Free with admission.
May 15 & 16: 25th Anniversary Celebration - Free Admission
Thru October 24, 2010: Noguchi ReINstalled
To celebrate the re-opening of the newly done garden, the complete collection of Noguchi will be on display. This is the first time since Spring 2002. Sculptures from all over the world will be returning to the museum in time for the opening.

PS1 Art Exhibits in Long Island City
May 23 - October 18: Greater New York 2010
This exhibit showcases living artists in the NY area. It includes workshops, performances, film and music. A couple of highlights include an encased simulated rain forest and an Atlas of Radical Cartography showing global interconnectedness, such as copper from Nevada going to smelters in China.
Closing May 10: The Chair For Man And His Spirit
Marina Abramovic's Chair For Man And His Spirit will be hosted in the PS1 courtyard. This chair was made for a 1997 opening.

From 7 - 9 pm on most first Fridays of the month, they host an opening reception, at their Fardom Gallery 25-17 41st Street in LIC. This month features many works of the past ten years by LIC artist Walter Carpenter, who passed away in November 2009. Admission free.

May 29: Jack In The Space
From 6 - 9 pm. Heng-Gil Han curates an exploration of space. For example what happens if Jackson Pollock's drips get unraveled? Is there space between the layers of paint? This exhibit attempts to make the art felt, rather than be seen.

Almost every evening they have something going on, most of which is stand up comedy, but also an occasional play or musical performance. Usually the fun begins at 8 pm, but times may vary. Admission is generally free except for special events - but there's generally a free space to just sit and have drinks or food as the Creek has many rooms. And they provide a comfortable informal ambiance, a bit like being at a nice lodge or a great coffee house for people after of college.

Gates open at 12 noon. A celebrity soccer match at Roy Wilkins Park this weekend. The event includes contenders for the World Cup in 98 and an artist allstar team. There will be DJ's to entertain the crowd in before and in between games with reggae music as a part of the event. Five Boro Bike Ride
May 2: Five Boro Bike Ride
The 42 mile Five Boro Bike Ride begins in Battery Park in Manhattan starting between 7.30 - 9.30 am. The ride heads north past Macy's & the NY Public Library into Central Park, north thru Harlem, circling back south along the FDR. It then crosses the Queens Boro Bridge and heads north to Astoria Park for the first rest stop. Then south over the Pulaski Bridge, thru Brooklyn onto Staten Island via the Verrazano Bridge.
