Noguchi Museum In Long Island City

August 8: Second Sundays - Bang On A Can / Cantaloupe Music

At 3 pm on the Second Sunday of every month the Noguchi Museum hosts music or a discussion in either the garden or the lower level meeting room. In August, Evan Ziporyn will perform. He has created music that draws heavily from the east [I think most notably China] and has a classical music quality to it. Free with admission.

To celebrate the re-opening of the newly done garden, the complete collection of Noguchi will be on display. This is the first time since Spring 2002. Sculptures from all over the world will be returning to the museum in time for the opening.

PS1 Art Exhibits in Long Island City

August 7, 14, 21, 28 & September 4: PS1 Warm Up Parties

From 2 - 9 pm. Every Saturday PS1 hosts a mix of live and DJ music in its courtyard. This year in the courtyard, the Young Architects Art installation is entitled Pole Dance, which is an acoustically tuned mix of nets, poles, balls and water. Access included with admission.

Through October 18: Greater New York 2010

This exhibit showcases 68 living artists in the NYC area. It includes exhibits, workshops, live performances, film and music. There's a 5 year review spanning the past 50 years of art, a rotating exhibit gallery, film in the basement and more. A couple of highlights include an encased simulated rain forest and an Atlas of Radical Cartography showing global interconnectedness, such as copper from Nevada going to smelters in China.

Admission $10, except on PS1 Warm Up Party Saturdays when admission is $15. Open Thursday through Monday 12 pm - 6 pm. Queens Museum Of Art [QMA] Exhibit in Flushing

August 6, 13, 20, 27: Target Passport Fridays 2010

From 6.30 - 10 pm every Friday. Each Friday night, QMA hosts a mix of film, music and dance from another culture. South Africa 7/9, Columbia / Ecuador 7/ 16, South Korea 7/23, Taiwan 7/30, Middle East 8/6, Brazil 8/13, India 8/20 and Mexico 8/27.

Perennial Exhibits: Panorama Of New York City & Tiffany Glass Collection

The panorama of the city of New York, created for the 1964 World's Fair and updated in the 90's is impressive to see at least once in a lifetime. And they also have a Tiffany Glass collection.

The first Sunday of every month is free from 1 - 4 pm, compliments of the MetLife Foundation. At 8 pm and 9.30 pm respectively. Seems like a couple of shows that include some of the top comic talent are running back to back and are free.

August: Comedy Nights At The Cave

Almost every evening they have something going on, most of which is stand up comedy, but also an occasional play or musical performance. Usually the fun begins at 8 pm, but times may vary. Admission is generally free except for special events - but there's generally a free space to just sit and have drinks or food as the Creek has many rooms. And they provide a comfortable informal ambiance, a bit like being at a nice lodge or a great coffee house for people after of college.

These core exhibits are about how films / movies are produced, including showcasing vintage equipment. There are a number of interactive kiosks where kids can play, while learning about how the moving image is created and manipulated. This month it's Carol Sudhalter & the Astoria Jazz Band who will be playing pieces composed by women composers of Queens such as Billie Holiday et al, with an emphasis on Julie Mandel and her Subway Suite. August: House Tours

House Tours are only available via 40 minute tours that start on the hour. Open Tuesday through Friday 10 am – 5 pm and Saturday, Sunday 12 pm - 5 pm. Admission $8 / $6. Jazz Festival tickets for June 19th concert in the Armstrong House yard, featuring many of the current jazz greats went on sale April 22nd for $15.

Queens Street Fairs / Street Festivals - August 2010

The following is a starting list of street fairs and you can click on this link to view a listing of the Queens Street Fairs of 2010, which includes maps of locations for many of the street fairs in Queens this year.

August 1: Junction Blvd Festival

From 11 am - 6 pm. Along Junction Blvd between Roosevelt and 35th Avenue in Corona.

August 7: JAMS Jamaica Avenue Festival

From 11 am - 6 pm. Along Jamaica Avenue from Parsons Blvd to 169th Street in Jamaica.

August 7: Bix Beiderbecke Jazz Concert / Street Fair

From 1.30 - 7 pm. In Sunnyside on 46th Street between Queens Blvd and Greenpoint Avenue under the Sunnyside Arch by the 7 Subway Train stop. Cartooning Workshop [1.30 pm], Sunnyside Drum Corps [3.30 pm] and the Bix Beiderbecke Memorial Jazz Orchestra [4 - 7 pm].

August 14: Astrograss

From noon - 7 pm. In same location as Bix concert [see above], bluegrass band from 1 - 3 pm and cartoon workshop from 3 - 5 pm.

August 15: 31st Street Astoria Festival

From 11 am - 6 pm. Along 31st Street between Ditmars Blvd and 21st Street in Astoria.

August 15: Water Walk

From 1 - 7 pm. Festival along Shore Blvd along the East River in Astoria Park. More a festival than street fair.

August 21: Jawbone & Tosh Sheridan

From noon - 7 pm. In same location as Bix concert [see above], rock band from 2 - 4 pm and Tosh Sheridan Trio band 4.30 - 6.30 pm.

August 28: Jon Bates Band

From noon - 7 pm. In same location as Bix concert [see above], Jon Bates band from 2 - 4 pm.

Astoria Park Alliance - Astoria Water Walk Along The East River

August 1, 8, 15 Sundays: Park Festival Along Shore Blvd

From 1 - 7 pm on Sundays. Admission free. For three weeks the Astoria Park Alliance is hosting the Astoria Water Walk along the East River. There will be cooking demonstrations by food vendors, musical and theatrical entertainment, arts & crafts and fitness workshops - all within steps of a beautiful Olympic-sized public swimming pool. FIAO - Federation Of Italian Americans

August 29: 5K Run / Walk

Begins at 9 am. Starts and ends at the FIAO Soccer Field on 20th Avenue and 33rd Street in Astoria. The race is through the streets of Astoria. Proceeds to go fight drug abuse. Prizes will be given to fastest runners. Admission [to run in the race] $20 / $12 / $10. Admission to watch the race is Free.


LIC Boathouse - Kayaking On The East River

U. S. Tennis Association - USTA - In Queens NY

During these days the tennis pros qualify and practice on the courts at Arthur Ashe Stadium in Flushing Meadows Corona Park. Admission is free.

August 30 - September 12: U.S. Open

This is a beautiful, relatively new facility. They are open Monday through Friday 6 A - 10 P and Saturday 9 A - 5 P. Closed for important holidays. Bring padlock for locker and a change of clothes for athletics.

NYC Parks – Indoor Swimming In Queens NY

August: Aquatic Center & World Class Ice Rink

NYC Parks Department opened a new Olympic sized pool in Flushing Meadows Corona Park. You must bring a swimming suit, a swimming cap and quality padlock to be admitted.
