There are also plenty of free things to do, such as concerts in the park, swimming at public pools, and shopping the fresh farmers markets and street fairs.
You can also cool down by going inside Queens art museums, theaters, restaurants and local shops.

Noguchi Museum In Long Island City
August 8: Second Sundays - Bang On A Can / Cantaloupe Music
At 3 pm on the Second Sunday of every month the Noguchi Museum hosts music or a discussion in either the garden or the lower level meeting room. In August, Evan Ziporyn will perform. He has created music that draws heavily from the east [I think most notably China] and has a classical music quality to it. Free with admission.
Thru October 24, 2010: Noguchi ReINstalled
To celebrate the re-opening of the newly done garden, the complete collection of Noguchi will be on display. This is the first time since Spring 2002. Sculptures from all over the world will be returning to the museum in time for the opening.
The museum is open Wednesday through Friday 10 am - 5 pm, and Saturday - Sunday 11 am - 6 pm. All programs are free with admission $10 / $5. First Friday of every month, pay what you wish. Click here to view a prior story about the Noguchi Museum in Queens.

PS1 Art Exhibits in Long Island City
August 7, 14, 21, 28 & September 4: PS1 Warm Up Parties
From 2 - 9 pm. Every Saturday PS1 hosts a mix of live and DJ music in its courtyard. This year in the courtyard, the Young Architects Art installation is entitled Pole Dance, which is an acoustically tuned mix of nets, poles, balls and water. Access included with admission.
Through October 18: Greater New York 2010
This exhibit showcases 68 living artists in the NYC area. It includes exhibits, workshops, live performances, film and music. There's a 5 year review spanning the past 50 years of art, a rotating exhibit gallery, film in the basement and more. A couple of highlights include an encased simulated rain forest and an Atlas of Radical Cartography showing global interconnectedness, such as copper from Nevada going to smelters in China.

Queens Museum Of Art [QMA] Exhibit in Flushing
August 6, 13, 20, 27: Target Passport Fridays 2010
From 6.30 - 10 pm every Friday. Each Friday night, QMA hosts a mix of film, music and dance from another culture. South Africa 7/9, Columbia / Ecuador 7/ 16, South Korea 7/23, Taiwan 7/30, Middle East 8/6, Brazil 8/13, India 8/20 and Mexico 8/27.
Perennial Exhibits: Panorama Of New York City & Tiffany Glass Collection
The panorama of the city of New York, created for the 1964 World's Fair and updated in the 90's is impressive to see at least once in a lifetime. And they also have a Tiffany Glass collection.
The first Sunday of every month is free from 1 - 4 pm, compliments of the MetLife Foundation. At 8 pm and 9.30 pm respectively. Seems like a couple of shows that include some of the top comic talent are running back to back and are free.
August: Comedy Nights At The Cave
Almost every evening they have something going on, most of which is stand up comedy, but also an occasional play or musical performance. Usually the fun begins at 8 pm, but times may vary. Admission is generally free except for special events - but there's generally a free space to just sit and have drinks or food as the Creek has many rooms. And they provide a comfortable informal ambiance, a bit like being at a nice lodge or a great coffee house for people after of college.

This month it's Carol Sudhalter & the Astoria Jazz Band who will be playing pieces composed by women composers of Queens such as Billie Holiday et al, with an emphasis on Julie Mandel and her Subway Suite. House Tours are only available via 40 minute tours that start on the hour. Open Tuesday through Friday 10 am – 5 pm and Saturday, Sunday 12 pm - 5 pm. Admission $8 / $6. Jazz Festival tickets for June 19th concert in the Armstrong House yard, featuring many of the current jazz greats went on sale April 22nd for $15.

NYC Parks Department opened a new Olympic sized pool in Flushing Meadows Corona Park. You must bring a swimming suit, a swimming cap and quality padlock to be admitted.
