The month of October marks the beginning of cooler weather.
The street fairs and fresh farmers markets begin slowing. Columbus Day and Halloween provide respite and excitement. And art, dance, music and theater abound, while local shops are stocking full inventories in advance of the holiday shopping season.

Noguchi Museum In Long Island City
October 10: Second Sundays - Tristan Perich Electronic Keyboard
At 3 pm. In October, Sydney Horenstein, geologist will be featured. Free with admission.
Thru October 24, 2010: Noguchi ReINstalled
To celebrate the re-opening of the newly done garden, the complete collection of Noguchi will be on display for the first time since Spring 2002.

October 30 - 31: MOVE!
From 12 - 6 pm, an exhibit / performance work done in a collaboration of artists with an online fashion magazine.
Through October 18: Five Year Review / Cinema
This exhibit focuses on some of the exhibitions, concerts, movies, fashion, design and happenings of the last fifty years as viewed by a group of artists / curators. As part of this program the vault in the basement has been converted into a movie theater where performances and movies will be shown as follows: 1) 9/30 - 10/4 exhibition of art work by seven artists with 3 pm screening daily, 2) 10/7 - 10/11 exhibition of artwork by two artists with 3 pm screening and 3) 10/15 - 10/17 Redmond Entwistle.
Through October 18: Greater New York 2010
This exhibit showcases 68 living artists in the NYC area. It includes exhibits, workshops, live performances, film and music. There's a 5 year review spanning the past 50 years of art, a rotating exhibit gallery, film in the basement and more. A couple of highlights include an encased simulated rain forest and an Atlas of Radical Cartography showing global interconnectedness, such as copper from Nevada going to smelters in China.

October 10: Book Fair
From 10 am to 6 pm. A book fair including about one hundred authors from around the globe and their books. Local author / historian Jason Antos will be there. Free with admission.
October 24: UN 65th Anniversary / Handheld History
From 3 - 6 pm. Celebration of the first meeting of the UN which was held in the building which is now the Queens Museum Of Art. Also, film briefs with hand helds as theme. Free with admission.
Perennial Exhibits: Panorama Of New York City & Tiffany Glass Collection
The panorama of the city of New York, created for the 1964 World's Fair and updated in the 90's is impressive to see at least once in a lifetime. And they also have a Tiffany Glass collection.
The first Sunday of every month is free from 1 - 4 pm, compliments of the MetLife Foundation. October 1, 2 & 3: Bohemian Hall Centennial Celebration
Lectures and discussions beginning at 8 am about real issues confronting Czech and Slovak societies and nations. In the evenings Friday night [8 pm] there will be a famous Czech vocalist with piano accompaniment, Saturday night [8 pm] a feast with roaming singers and followed by a jazz band and on Sunday evening [7 pm] a Czech student swing band.

October 22, 23 & 24: 1st Annual Astoria / LIC Film Festival
Starts at 8 pm Friday night / 10 am on Saturday and Sunday. There will be 50 films including features, shorts and music videos from seven countries. Showtimes are every two hours starting at 10 am, with the last sessions at 4 pm. On Sunday night there will be a party at 6.30 pm. October 9: Federation Of Italian Americans (FIAO) Columbus Day Parade In Astoria
Assemble in front of Kaufman Astoria Studios at 11 am. Parade begins at noon runs north along Steinway Street, turns west on 30th Avenue, turns north again on 31st Street and ends at Columbus Triangle near the Astoria Blvd subway stop. The total route is 1.5 miles. Click here for a photo album and slide show of the 2008 Columbus Day Parade in Astoria - it's one of the best parades in Queens, a bit reminiscent of an earlier time.

At 8 pm on Friday. The jazz ensemble plays the tunes of Jelly Roll Morton, King Joe Oliver and Papa Jack Lane. These musicians were creating jazz before it became known as Big Band, Swing and Be Bop. Admission is $40 / $20.
