November is the month of Thanksgiving. A time to celebrate the fall harvest with family and friends and to be thankful for what we have. In Queens it's also the month of the Queens International Film Festival. And the Thanksgiving weekend is well known to kick off holiday shopping and the end of the year party season. It's been a difficult year. You've worked hard. Time to relax a bit and reward yourself.

The Weekend Before Thanksgiving
And All Through The House ...
Queens / November 19, 2009. Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse. Well that was a long time ago, because there's a lot stirring in Queens these days. Take a look.
In Astoria Thursday night and running through Saturday is 'The Pillowman' by the Astoria Performing Arts Center. The performances begin at 8 pm [also Saturday at 2 pm] and it's performed at the Good Sheperd United Methodist Church and costs $15 advance / $18 door. In Flushing Thursday evening at the Queens Theatre In The Park the last film of the MOTMI collaboration - 2001 Space Odyssey - will be shown [Film]. Also on Thursday at the Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden in Astoria they're hosting an independent film night. In LIC / Long Island City, Cyrano De Bergerac is playing at the Secret Theatre [Theater] Thursday through Sunday evenings.
In Sunnyside, Friday and Saturday evenings and Sunday afternoon at Thalia Theatre, The Best Of The Mestizos, which is a dance and music performances from Latin America [Theater]. Also Friday night at The Creek And The Cave in LIC, there's a 'Bachelorette Party' beginning at 9.30 pm [Comedy].
Saturday afternoon beginning at 4 pm in Woodside, Topaz Arts celebrates its 9 year anniversary with a special dance performance including Paz herself [Dance]. On Saturday evening at the Flushing Town Hall there's the annual NEA Jazz Masters performance which is an extremely good jazz concert that frequently attracts truly gifted talent [Music]. Saturday evening beginning at 5 pm in Astoria the Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden hosts Velvet Revolution celebrating the twentieth anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall [Music] with a famous Czech band.
And on Sunday in LIC from 4 - 6 pm PS1 hosts a performance art series which we attended last weekend and upon which we will report late this weekend, but our overall impression based on the first program is that it will be at the least, artistically interesting, and quite possibly also enjoyable [Art]. Queens weather will be in the low forties to mid fifties, with 70% chance of rain Thursday, diminishing to 10% by Friday evening and staying there through the weekend until Sunday evening.
This Weekend In Queens
Film Festival / Theatre / Music /Art / Juggling
Queens Events / November 12, 2009. There's a two to one chance of intermittent rain on Friday and Saturday, dropping to a one in three chance on Sunday, with cloud cover throughout most of the weekend. Temperatures will range from the high forties to the high fifties, topping sixty on Sunday.
In Flushing Thursday night at the Queens Theatre In The Park starting at 7.30 pm - Fellini's movie masterpiece 8 1/2 [film]. Also on Thursday, Son De Madre, a latin fusion band, at the Jamaica Performing Arts Center beginning at 7.30 pm [music].
All weekend in Astoria, beginning Thursday at 11 am, is the seventh annual Queens Film Festival [see full report below]. All weekend in Long Island City beginning Thursday at 8 pm, the Secret Theatre is performing Cyrano De Bergerac [theatre].
On Saturday at 4 pm in Long Island City, PS1 begins a new performance series which isn't in the events calendar per se, but the location details may be found there under [art]. The two performances will explore emotional reactivity and slow drift musical tuning of a volkswagon in the courtyard [PS1 performance artist shown above]. Later that evening in LIC at the LaGuardia Performing Arts Center is a dance performance by Dina Denis including three different performances; one by the studio dancers, another jazzy quartet piece and the third is a collaboration with Ken Frey and Andriano Sverko, video and media artists.
On Sunday starting at 2 pm at the Flushing Town Hall is a juggling performance by Greg Kennedy [kids]. In Sunnyside on Sunday at 4 pm [as well as Friday and Saturday at 8 pm] the Thalia Theatre performs The Best Of Mestizo [theatre].
Weekend Events In Queens
Queens NY / November 5, 2009. This weekend the weather will be SUNNY, with the temperatures ranging from the mid thirties to the high fifties. Thursday at Queens Theatre In The Park, starting at 7.30 pm is the movie 'Tokyo Story' [admission $10]. Also starting on Thursday at 7 pm is the weekend long singer-songwriter contest at Waltz-Astoria [music]. On Friday in Long Island City starting at 7 pm is the first Friday at the Fardom Gallery hosted by LIC Space. At 8 pm at Flushing Town Hall there will be a performance by Pucho and the Latin Soul Brothers [admission $20 / $10].
On Saturday in Long Island City starting at 2 pm there will be a networking event sponsored by the Queens Council On The Arts at the United Nations Federal Credit Union Bldg. At the Renaissance Charter School at 10 am there will be an environmental fair followed by an 11 am planning session for a Green Agenda for Jackson Heights [Social Causes]. On Saturday night LaGuardia Performing Arts Center is participating on a round the world event called '24 Hours' during which groups will participate via interactive internet connections including a number of cultural performances / lectures. This unusual event starts at 3 pm on Saturday and runs until 3 pm Sunday from the Little Theatre at LPAC [History / Culture]. Admission is $24 / $12 midnite special.
On Sunday in Flushing at 2.30 pm at the Queens Historical Society, Pierre Montiel's will provide a lecture / slide show of the 1964 World's Fair [Historic]. Click into the Queens Events section of this site for further details and then click down into the section in parentheses next to each event.

Noguchi Museum In Long Island City
November 8: Second Sundays - EDOKKO Growing Up A Foreigner In Wartime Japan
At 3 pm on the Second Sunday of every month the Noguchi Museum hosts music or a discussion in either the garden or the lower level meeting room. In November there will be a reading from a soon-to-be-published book about growing up in wartime Japan by a contemporary and friend of Noguchi. Admission free.
Through October 24, 2010: Noguchi ReINstalled
To celebrate the re-opening of the newly done garden, the complete collection of Noguchi will be on display. This is the first time since Spring 2002. Sculptures from all over the world will be returning to the museum in time for the opening.
The museum is open Wednesday through Friday 10 am - 5 pm, and Saturday - Sunday 11 am - 6 pm. Admission $10 / $5. First Friday of every month, pay what you wish. PS1 Art Exhibits in Long Island City

This is a performance art exhibit. From 3 - 6 pm on Nov 22nd there will be something going on, but I find it difficult to understand / describe exactly what that may be.

2,822 records of all kinds of music fastened to the floor in a large room where people can walk on them.

From the MOMA collection, a number of works done in and around 1969 will be on display in an art year theme.

From 7 - 9 pm on the first Friday of every month The Space hosts a reception at their Fardom Gallery. For November the exhibit is 'radareyes' which is a collection of hallucinogenic prints by a printmaking duo from Canada / Chicago. Prints may be purchased for between $75 and $350. Donations accepted for wine & cheese reception.

November 1 & On Exhibit In November: Reception - Daniel Bozhkov, Duke Riley & O Zhang
From 3 to 6 pm reception for exhibit openings. Duke Riley is a follow up exhibition of the staged war held last August. Daniel Bozhkov is an interesting collection of relics of the past and some interesting perspectives of today using frames he creates for current / past views. And O Zhang is a collection of children's creations of what their parents' native lands look like to them.

Through November 30: A Voyage Of Growth & Discovery
This is a video, sculpture and sound installation. A large 30 foot junk sculpture will occupy the 3,000 square feet main floor, surrounded by related works. This came out of the desert and is passing through on its way to Roma.

The In Practice Projects are a series the Sculpture Center does to give new artists their break. While I've only been to one In Practice [Winter 2009] I found it absolutely fascinating, especially when the artists explain their work.

November 5th - 8th: The Ultimate Singer-Songwriter Contest
Starting on Thursday night and going all weekend there's a singer-songwriter contest going on. Thursday, Friday and Saturday are the qualifying rounds, followed by the final round on Sunday. Sign ups start at 7 pm and the music begins at 7.30 pm. Ten minutes / two songs per artist. The finals on Sunday begin at 8 pm. Winners elected by audience vote.

November 6: Pucho & The Latin Soul Brothers
At 8 pm there will be a performance by Henry "Pucho" Brown, who first played Carnegie in 1965. He was one of the first musicians to fuse mambo, jazz and funk. Admission $20 / $10.
November 8: Nivedita Shivra
At 2 pm the Indian musician, Nivedita, using the veena, the classical Indian stringed instrument plays music that might be termed western influenced indian fusion. Free admission.
November 15: Greg Kennedy Juggler
At 3.15 pm a man called "a hero to the art form" will perform juggling acts. Admission $12 / $10 / $8.
November 20: NEA Jazz Masters
At 7 pm some legendary musicians come home to play, including Jimmy Heath on the sax, Frank Wess on the sax and flute, Barry Harris on the piano, Benny Powell on the trombone, Tootie Heath on the drums and David Wong on the bass. Admission $40.

NYC Parks Department opened a new Olympic sized pool in Flushing Meadows Corona Park. You must bring a swimming suit, a swimming cap and quality padlock to be admitted.
