December marks the end of the year 2009. Time to celebrate a tough year survived. Maintain your inner peace and happiness and all will flow from within. At Queens Buzz we want to thank you for your interest and support.


Warm Weekend Ahead

christmas day queens ny 2009Queens NY / December 25, 2009. This weekend the weather is expected to be in the forties. It will be cloudy Friday, some rain is expected Saturday and it will be sunny on Sunday. It is a low key weekend as far as activities go, but there are a number of interesting things to do with friends or the kids.

The art museums will be open and have a number of interesting exhibits going on. For details about the art exhibits or other items mentioned below, scroll through the Queens Events section of this site. We recommend a visit to Astoria to see the Museum Of The Moving Image, upon which we will post a report sometime over the next few days. Beginning Saturday the Museum Of The Moving Image will be open for a ten day stretch. The Queens Zoo and NY Science Hall, both in Flushing Meadows Corona Park are also open throughout the holidays. And in Jamaica at the Black Spectrum Theatre Company there is a performance about Kwanza.


Holiday Weather Soon To Arrive

kwanza in queens 2009Queens / December 17, 2009. This weekend the highs will be in the thirties and the lows in the twenties. There's a 90% chance of snow on Saturday, but could fall later in the day. On Friday night in Jamaica there's a film about Kwanza at the Afrikan Poetry Society beginning at 8 pm [history / culture]. On Saturday in Astoria there's a history roundtable at the Greater Astoria Historical Society beginning at 1 pm [history]. In Flushing at 8 pm [Sunday 3 pm] there's the Paul Taylor Dance Company with its annual performances at Queens Theatre In The Park [dance].

On Sunday in Flushing there's the last showing of the film Sweet Karma at the Queens Theatre In The Park [film]. Also in Flushing beginning at 5 pm there's a reception and discussion about AIDS at the Queens Museum Of Art [art]. All weekend in LIC at the Secret Theatre there are performances of A Midsummers Nights Dream and Titus Andronicus [Theater]. Click into our Queens Events calendar for details of all events. Nutcracker / Karma / PS1

Performance Art / Film / Nutcracker Ballet / History Tour & ...

Thursday in Flushing at the Queens Museum Of Art starting at 6 pm is a documentary film about the changes in Venezeula since Hugo Chavez has taken power. It will be followed by a discussion. Also tonite in Jamaica at 6.30 pm, for the kids there's a holiday party at JCAL. On Friday in Astoria, staring at 8 pm there's a talent expo at Waltz-Astoria featuring three talented musicians.

On Saturday, in Flushing at the Queens Theatre In The Park, starting at 2 pm a comedy entitled Rosa about a mother / daughter relationship and at 8 pm there's a film entitled Sweet Karma which has some scrooge analogies. In Long Island City at 3 pm at the LaGuardia Performing Arts Center there's a performance of the Nutcracker. Also in LIC at PS1 there are two performance art acts - one explores modern conceptions of entertainment while another explores the sounds of construction - beginning at 4 pm.

On Sunday, in Flushing beginning at 1 pm, there's the annual historic holiday house tour. Meet at the Queens Historical Society or any of the participating sites to start the tour. All weekend long in Jamaica there are performances of 'The Night Before Kwanza' starting at 8 pm at the Black Spectrum Theatre Company. And at the Secret Theatre Company in Long Island City there are performances all weekend long of 'Titus Andronicus' starting at 8 pm. Noguchi Museum In Long Island City

December 13: Second Sundays - One Day Sale

At 3 pm on the Second Sunday of every month the Noguchi Museum hosts music or a discussion in either the garden or the lower level meeting room. In December there will be a sale in lieu of regular programming with discounts of 10%.

To celebrate the re-opening of the newly done garden, the complete collection of Noguchi will be on display. This is the first time since Spring 2002. Sculptures from all over the world will be returning to the museum in time for the opening.

The museum is open Wednesday through Friday 10 am - 5 pm, and Saturday - Sunday 11 am - 6 pm. Admission $10 / $5. First Friday of every month, pay what you wish. PS1 Art Exhibits in Long Island City

December 12: Wayne Hodge / Daniel Perlin

From 4 - 6 pm. As part of PS1's ongoing performance art series they're hosting performance art each month. In December Wayne will do a song & minstrel performance testing stereotypes of entertainment. Daniel will construct a model house while creating an audio composition of his effort.

Through April 5, 2010: 100 Years

Performance and art exhibit. In November it included two performance art events. If there are more we will post them here as we become aware of them.

Through April 5, 2010: Christian Marclay 2,822 Records

2,822 records of all kinds of music fastened to the floor in a large room where people can walk on them.

Through April 5, 2010: 1969

From the MOMA collection, a number of works done in and around 1969 will be on display in an art year theme. The works are done in nearly every medium.

Through March 1, 2010: Leandro Erlich's Swimming Pool

From 3 - 6 pm a reception for this exhibit which showcases 60 works by 54 artists.

December 10: Film - Inside The Revolution

From 6 to 10.30 pm, a film about the revolution of Hugo Chavez in Venezuela. This film will be very interesting for anyone interested in what's been going on in Venezuela since Chavez took power.

December 12: Ecuadorian Music Festival

From 12 noon to 5 pm, Ecuadorian musicians perform.

December 20: Framing AIDS 2009

From 5 - 7 pm reception & artist talk about AIDS.

Duke Riley is a follow up exhibition of the staged war held last August. Daniel Bozhkov is an interesting collection of relics of the past and some interesting perspectives of today using frames he creates for current / past views. And O Zhang is a collection of children's creations of what their parents' native lands look like to them.

Perennial Exhibits: Panorama Of New York City & Tiffany Glass Collection

The panorama of the city of New York, created for the 1964 World's Fair and updated in the 90's is impressive to see at least once in a lifetime. And they also have a Tiffany Glass collection.

December: Comedy Nights At The Cave

Almost every evening they have something going on, most of which is stand up comedy, but also an occasional play or musical performance. Usually the fun begins at 8 pm, but times may vary. Admission is generally free except for special events - but there's generally a free space to just sit and have drinks or food as the Creek has many rooms. And they provide a comfortable informal ambiance, a bit like being at a nice lodge or a great coffee house for people after of college.

Museum Of The Moving Image In Astoria NY

December 26 - January 3: Holiday Week Activities

The museum will be open from 10 am to 5 pm, including New Years Day [closed for Christmas]. There will be a moving pictures workshop staring at 12 noon for ages 6 - 12 which runs for 45 mintues and there's a materials fee of $5 per child. From 1.30 to 3 pm there's a Stop Motion Animation Workshop for ages 10 and up with a materials fee of $10. And running hourly from 11 am to 4 pm are short animated films by Pixar. For Kids / Children.

December: Behind The Screen

This core exhibit is about how films / movies are produced, including showcasing vintage equipment.

The museum hours are Tuesday through Fridays 10 am - 4 pm and Saturday - Sunday 12 pm - 6 pm. Admission is a suggested donation of $7 and children under the age of 8 free. This is a beautiful, relatively new facility. They are open Monday through Friday 6 A - 10 P and Saturday 9 A - 5 P. Closed for important holidays. Bring padlock for locker and a change of clothes for athletics.

December: Aquatic Center & World Class Ice Rink

NYC Parks Department opened a new Olympic sized pool in Flushing Meadows Corona Park. You must bring a swimming suit, a swimming cap and quality padlock to be admitted.
