Noguchi Museum In Long Island City
March 14: Second Sundays - Screening & Lecture About Dirt: The Ecstatic Skin Of The Earth
At 3 pm on the Second Sunday of every month the Noguchi Museum hosts music or a discussion in either the garden or the lower level meeting room. In March, author Bill Logan will talk about a movie [Dirt] made based on his book with the title above. The movie will also be shown.
Through October 24, 2010: Noguchi ReINstalled
To celebrate the re-opening of the newly done garden, the complete collection of Noguchi will be on display. This is the first time since Spring 2002. Sculptures from all over the world will be returning to the museum in time for the opening.
The museum is open Wednesday through Friday 10 am - 5 pm, and Saturday - Sunday 11 am - 6 pm. All programs are free with admission $10 / $5. First Friday of every month, pay what you wish. Click here to view a prior story about the Noguchi Museum in Queens.

Saturdays In March: Performance Series
Generally from 4 - 6 pm [but some programs have started as early as noon] PS1 hosts two performance art vignettes. These cross a wide range of subjects and perspectives; and virtually anything goes in the use of mixed media and materials. We frequently post specifics on Thursday on the front page.

Performance and art exhibit. In November it included two performance art events. If there are more we will post them here as we become aware of them.

2,822 records of all kinds of music fastened to the floor in a large room where people can walk on them.
Through April 5, 2010: 1969
From the MOMA collection, a number of works done in and around 1969 will be on display in an art year theme. The works are done in nearly every medium.
Through March 1, 2010: Leandro Erlich's Swimming Pool

Twenty four large scale selected portraits out of photographer Robert Bergman's archive.

An exhibit done by the junior curatorial staff that has several themes including nostalgia, materialism, psychological shifts and illusions. They take every day items and recast them as art objects.
Through May 2010: The Chair For Man And His Spirit
Marina Abramovic's Chair For Man And His Spirit will be hosted in the PS1 courtyard. This chair was made for a 1997 opening.

Duke Riley is a follow up exhibition of the staged war held last August. Daniel Bozhkov is an interesting collection of relics of the past and some interesting perspectives of today using frames he creates for current / past views. And O Zhang is a collection of children's creations of what their parents' native lands look like to them.
March 12: Trivia Quiz NYC
From 7 - 10 pm, ten teams will compete on NYC geography trivia.
Perennial Exhibits: Panorama Of New York City & Tiffany Glass Collection
The panorama of the city of New York, created for the 1964 World's Fair and updated in the 90's is impressive to see at least once in a lifetime. And they also have a Tiffany Glass collection.
The first Sunday of every month is free from 1 - 4 pm, compliments of the MetLife Foundation. From 5 - 7 pm there will be a reception for the opening of a group exhibit of some sixteen international artists. They use Franz Kafka's verse from Leopard's In The Temple as the theme. Delving into issues of transformation and paradox in a multi-media format. Should be good.

The sculptural works of an artist who passed away last year.

Almost every evening they have something going on, most of which is stand up comedy, but also an occasional play or musical performance. Usually the fun begins at 8 pm, but times may vary. Admission is generally free except for special events - but there's generally a free space to just sit and have drinks or food as the Creek has many rooms. And they provide a comfortable informal ambiance, a bit like being at a nice lodge or a great coffee house for people after of college.

Museum Of The Moving Image In Astoria NY
March: Spring Break
The museum will be open from 10 am to 5 pm on these dates. There will be a 'Moving Pictures Workshop' starting at 11.30 am for ages 6 - 12 which runs for 45 mintues and there's a materials fee of $5 per child. There are also a workshop on 'Stop Motion Animation' that begins at 1 pm and also at 2.30 pm. There are also gallery demonstrations on the Kinetoscope, Sound Editing and Video Game Technology. At 11, 12.30, 2 and 3.30 pm pm there will be a film showing entitled 'A Town Called Panic'. The film is one of the first award winning stop motion films and it's about three toys that mistakenly order 50 million bricks. For Adults with Kids / Children.
March: Behind The Screen
These core exhibits are about how films / movies are produced, including showcasing vintage equipment. There are a number of interactive kiosks where kids can play, while learning about how the moving image is created and manipulated. March 7: St Patrick's Day Parade
This year the festivities begin in Sunnyside on Skillman Avenue and 43rd Street at 1 pm. The parade begins at 2 pm and ends at 3 pm at Woodside and 61st Street, in Woodside. The St Pat's For All Parade or the St Patrick's People's Day Parade continues in its tenth year of openness to all.

March 6: Johnny Cash Festival
The festival begins at 5 pm, with a reading by author Anonino Ambosio [A Heartbeat And A Guitar]. From 6.30 to 7 pm there's a book signing. From 7 - 8 pm 'suppertime' [food not included]. And from 8 - 9.30 pm a film screening of Johnny Cash At Folsom Prison. From 9.30 - 11.30 the LIC Tennessee Three perform. Admission $20 in advance or $25 at the door.
March 3, 4, 5: In My Free Time I Self Destruct
At 8 pm on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Original work that explores the hyper aware mind. It sounds like a discombobulation of theater, themes and life itself. In all of this chaos, perhaps we'll find meaning? Admission $15.
March 4 - 20: Measure For Measure
At 8 pm [with matinees at 3.30 pm on the 13th and 20th]. An updated performance of an Italian comedy, written by Carolo Goldoni in the 1740's about a man who 'serves two masters'. Admission $15.
March 18 - April 3: Othello
At 8 pm on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Admission $15.
March 20: Secret Burlesque
At 11 pm. BBQ and comedy and juggling. $10 admission.

World premiere by choreographer Angel Gil Orrios, in collaboration with writer Jorge Luis Borges and composer Astor Piazolla with original music and musical direction from 2007 Latin Grammy Award winner Raul Juarena. Jazz & St Pat's Parade
Queens / March 4, 2010. There's much afoot in Queens this weekend, all of which you can see by browsing through in the Queens Events section of this site. Here are a just few of the highlights of this upcoming weekend.
On Friday night in Astoria there's live jazz at the Bohemian Hall and Beer Garden and live mixed music at Waltz-Astoria, both beginning at 8 pm. On Saturday in Astoria there's a benefit for Haiti at Hellgate Social, the details of which are posted in our Members Calendar. Also on Friday night, in Sunnyside, the Thalia Theatre continues its spicy, latin tango performances throughout the weekend.
On Saturday in Long Island City there's an art peformance at PS1 beginning at 4 pm. Also in LIC on Saturday evening beginning at 5 pm at the Secret Theatre there's a Johnny Cash festival which includes a book signing, barbeque, music and more. And in LIC that same night, beginning at 7.30 pm at the LaGuardia Performing Arts Center there's an interesting rendition of Hamlet being performed. It's a working piece entitled 'Hamlet In A Black Box'.
The St Pat's Day Parade festivities begin in Sunnyside at 1 pm [click on photo above for details and click here for a route map of the St Pat's Day Parade in Sunnyside]. In Flushing beginning at 3.30 pm there's a Meet The Artists reception wherein artists who created three of the museum's current exhibits will be available for you to meet with to discuss art.
Remember # 7 Subway Weekend Service Suspended between NYC and Queensboro Plaza. This weekend, the # 7 subway service stops after 11.30 pm Friday nights and resumes Monday morning before 6 am. You may still use the E, F, N, W and Q subways to cross the East River. This is the fifth of nine weekends [ends April 9th], so we're over the half way mark.
Folk Music, Daylight Savings Time &...
Queens / March 12, 2010. Theatre - This weekend there's an interesting play entitled, Hamlet In A Black Box, being performed at the LaGuardia Performing Arts Center in LIC. The play uses Hamlet as the underlying story, while the director / producer and actors play with themes of memory and reality. There's also a performance of Borges & Piazolla tango at Thalia Theatre in Sunnyside and a Shakespearean play, Measure For Measure, being performed at the Secret Theatre in LIC. Music - In Flushing on Friday night at 8 pm at the Flushing Town Hall there's what should be a wonderful performance by the Korean musicians of the New York Philharmonic. On Saturday there's a fun, funky all day Folk Music Festival including workshops and performances at the Renaissance Charter School in Jackson Heights. And on Sunday there's a presentation of the Triangle Factory Fire at the Queens Historical Society in Flushing.
Also This Weekend - Daylight Savings Time / The #7 Subway Resumes Weekend Service To NYC / Rain. At 2 am on Sunday morning we spring ahead one hour - so remember to set your clocks ahead. The work on the #7 subway line has been completed ahead of schedule, so weekend service between NYC and Queens returns to that line. And this weekend rain is forecast with temperatures in the forties.
Dance, Jazz, Theater & Spring
QueensBuzz / March 18, 2010. The first weekend of Spring and Daylight Savings Time will be mostly sunny with daytime temperatures in the sixties. Oh yeah. Dance. Green Space in LIC is hosting Take Root and Fertile Ground performances on Saturday and Sunday evenings respectively [click into members calendar for best desciption of details]. This is your last chance to enjoy the Borges & Piazolla Tango at Thalia Spanish Theatre in Sunnyside.
Music. On Friday in Astoria there's jazz at the Bohemian Hall and Beer Garden as well as performances at Waltz-Astoria. On Saturday, in Jamaica, at the Afrikan Poetry Society there's a Brasilian jazz performance that looks really good.
Theater. Flushing Town Hall is performing the Music Man Jr. on Thursday and Friday nights. This is the last weekend to see Measure For Measure at the Secret Theatre in LIC, and your first weekend to see Othello which starts on Thursday. Also at Secret on Saturday there's Secret Burleque.
Film / History. On Saturday in LIC the Flux Factory is screening a new art film. On Sunday the Queens Historical Society is presenting a slide show / lecture on how women's role in the Abolitionist movement lead them to seek their own equal rights.
LIC Jazz Fest & Going Green In Queens
March 25, 2010. The Geometry is being performed at the Chocolate Factory Theater in LIC beginning at 8 pm Thursday through Saturday [scroll down to report below]. Othello is being performed at the Secret Theatre in LIC starting at 8 pm on Thursday through Saturday. Admission $15.
On Friday night in LIC the LaGuardia Performing Arts Center [LPAC] is hosting a performance by AO doing a show called '90 Ways To Wake From Drowning'. It's an experimental piece that begins at 8 pm with admission $5. Also at LPAC on Saturday hip hop dancer Kelley Peters is giving a dance workshop that begins at 12 noon with admission $10. In Astoria on Friday there's music being performed at Waltz-Astoria and jazz at the Bohemian Hall and Beer Garden, both beginning at 8 pm.
Going Green In Queens, is a forum to learn about and address environmental issues which runs from 9.30 am - 3.30 pm at the Al Oerter Recreational Center in Flushing. On Saturday night there's Wrestlemania at The Creek & The Cave in LIC running from 5 to 8 pm. And Club Amazura in Jamaica is hosting Reewind and Reggae / dancehall event that should shake your booty.
And on Sunday, there's an all day Jazz Fest in LIC at the Secret Theatre starting at 10 am and going through to 10 pm with admission $17.50 for an all day pass.
